Description
If this is in the wong category, please let me know XDOkay, so, I've promised this thing to a lot of people at a lot of different times. And I've put it off, and put it off... and finally I was prodded enough to freaking do it! So here it is! My very own tutorial on how I draw hands. I tried to keep it simple while covering all the bases I could... and in doing so, pointing out and clearing up common mistakes I've come across.
I hope it helps! Feel free to download and share around as much as possible... credit to me is always welcome
If you fave this, thank you! I can't take the time to thank everyone one at a time, but I really appreciate it, and I hope it comes in... handy

It really is! I'm glad this helped. Keep in mind that there is no one "correct" way to draw hands. Everyone has their own technique-- I even switch between drawing finger sections as boxes or ovals depending on the pose.

I was wondering how to position hands on objects, like a hip or something? (fingers are so hard omg)
Also I'm still getting sausage fingers :'D

Positioning hands on objects is definitely tricky because suddenly you've got more perspective and foreshortening to worry about. The hand is wrapping itself around that three-dimensional form, and so parts of it are hidden or seem to be shorter than they are because of the illusion of perspective.
My first piece of advice is to try and work in overlapping shapes-- begin to break down and visualize hands (and everything else for that matter) as 3D objects like boxes and spheres all put together. When a hand or a finger is coming toward the viewer or going away, those shapes overlap each other, changing the length they appear to be.
Here's some work of mine you're welcome to reference:
A hand on a hip, note the thumb hidden behind the hip and the fingers fanning out, bent at the knuckles. 68.media.tumblr.com/7571356ba8…
Another hand on a hip, from a different angle. The thumb is totally hidden, the palm is "squished" (foreshortened) as are the first parts of the fingers coming toward us. Once the fingers bend they return to their "normal" view. ccrask.deviantart.com/art/Knig…
Hands in perspective, one wrapped around an arm (warning for some blood). In the bottom frame, the hand is foreshortened, the fingers coming out toward us. You can see how the shape of the fingertips is overlapping the shape of the first joint of the finger, which is overlapping the second joint, and so on. ccrask.deviantart.com/art/As-A…
In this one, you can see the hand splayed out on the table, with the fingers appearing to come forward in space, foreshortened. You can also see a hand wrapped around the handle of a mug; the thumb is again hidden, and the fingers each bend as they wrap around the handle. 68.media.tumblr.com/8f89d6dd62…
And here's the sketch of that one where you can see how I 'built' the hand using overlapping circles and ovals. 68.media.tumblr.com/56cfd8aef3…
My last and best piece of advice is to look at real pictures or references of hands, and to practice, practice, practice. I still have to put my hand on my hip and look at it, or often take quick pics of my hands in different positions, to draw them. No shame in it. Good luck!!

I need to look at my dA more, I only just saw this--
Thank you so much for the advice! Do you think it'd be okay for me to note you some sta.sh stuff so you can give me tips and pointers on those? ;v;
It's fine if you don't want to; this advice is awesome and a whole lot more than I could've hoped for!

Of course, by all means. I'm no longer an expert on the ins and outs of DA so I have little idea of what that means, but I'm sure I'll figure it out once you do it, lmao!
It's my pleasure <3

Very helpful. I've been trying out so many new techniques to draw hands, looking for one I can put to memory by switching it up a bit to make it easier for me. Your version is one I've tried recently

It seems every artist figures out their own way of going about it that makes sense to them-- often times they can't even accurately really explain it. IMO it's a great idea to see what's out there and then take bits and pieces from everything-- i know that's what I did, not just with hands but with pretty much everything there is to know about drawing. I'm glad to contribute some nugget of info to your pile

This is a great tutorial. Thank you for sharing. Does knowing the skeletal structure of the hand good to keep in mind as well? (Besides the last part in showing aging in the hands?)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ccRask In reply to HerosLegend [2016-02-25 00:58:31 +0000 UTC]
Kind of depends. Keep the skeletal structure in mind, sure-- it should ensure that your fingers stay straight and only bend at the knuckles.
But if keeping it "in mind" means to you "studying in depth", and if you are just beginning to understand how to draw hands, beware. Most people I've known that worry about the skeleton first, and the surface second, get entirely too wrapped up in the skeletal part and make their whole process harder than it needs to be. I've seen people draw bones/muscles only to erase most of their work when they cover it up with skin.
Knowing where the bones/muscles are is absolutely helpful when you wonder why this or that body part looks the way it does when it's stretched versus flexed versus relaxed. But be careful you don't go too far down that rabbit hole and make an already difficult body part even more frustrating.
