Description
'Show Desktop' is a small portable application, inspired by Windows 7 Aero Peek, that creates a small rectangular button at the right side of the user's taskbar that not only replaces the original Windows 7 Show Desktop Button, but also adds tons of features. For those using Windows Operating Systems, 'Show Desktop' is fully compatible with Windows XP and Vista, and provides all of the features that can be found on the Windows 7 Show Desktop Button, and more.
'Show Desktop' is greatly customizable, in that it allows the user to change the application's settings to their liking.
'Show Desktop' also gives the access to Shutdown options directly from the Show Desktop Button. These options allow the user to easily switch users, log off, lock, sleep, shutdown, restart, and hibernate their computer straight from a menu accessible from the button itself.
Features
• Show Desktop Button addition for Windows XP, and Vista; Show Desktop Button replacement for Windows 7
• 'Aero Peek' support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 with customization.
• A redesigned and easy to use Exclusion Manager to exclude certain programs from being peeked through
• Shutdown Options
• 'Toggling the Desktop' and 'Minimize Windows' features that allow the user to choose the method in which open windows are minimized.
• Ability to change the delay before when 'Aero Peek' is invoked
• Support and automatically adjusting feature for different taskbar sizes and positions
• (NEW) Drag and Drop feature where all windows are minimized when a file is dragged onto the Show Desktop Button
• (NEW) Option to have the application run on Windows Startup
and more...
Show Desktop XP is exclusive to Aero Xtreme 7 XP . You may NOT package it with a theme or any other work without my or IanITAInc 's permission. However, if you want to feature 'Show Desktop', you can simply simply post a link to this page.

When you hover over the button for aero peek and then move your cursor away, the window(s) move up a little.

I think i may be a giant idiot. When these apps are set to always on top, they don't get minimized...but when they are set to 'always on bottom' they do get minimized. I suppose it isn't show-desktop, either your utility, or the standard windows button at all, its just how these apps are designed. I still think its really dum for them to be designed that way. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try and ask the developers themselves to see if they can add that functionality.
But the exclude list for your button would work as well. I guess you can't always get what you want

No, windows that are set to be always on top can be minimized. One example is the task manager.

I'm so glad, your app works like a charm. Only little problem (isn't really one): The balloon tip appears on another place by each mouseover. Sometimes (5 of 30 tries) it goes behind the taskbar.Still visible but only three or four pixels of height. Anything else, only one word: Fantastic!
Btw. I don't have this rainmeter minimize problem.
I've featured your app in the win 7 users group, linking back to your page.

So! The good news is that it works like its supposed to. Your button now stays on top of the windwows 7 button...i can access its settings and aero peek seems to work fine!
The bad new is...for some reason now on windows 7, as apposed to XP, where i had tested it with your pre-xmas version of the app, when i choose method to show desktop as "minimize windows," and then click it, it also minimized rocketdock and rainbar gadgets! This was the reason I was eagerly awaiting your app
Well, on the plus side, you did set out to fix the button on bottom problem...and as far as i can see it works...Any chance you might look into the 'minimize windows' part as well? Or will i have to wait for a possible rewrite of your code somewhere down the line?

Well that good to hear, I'll be updating the public version it in a few minutes.
About the minimize windows, yes I've know about it and
when I wrote it, I wrote it so that an exclusion list could be added to keep certain windows from being minimized. I just never got around to it.
But thanks for all your help, I'm glad it works now

Hey, can you help me out? I'm trying to make a window that can stay on top of the taskbar at all times like your Show Desktop button (no, it's not sPeek or 7Peek or anything like that). I'm been looking into adding it as a child window of the taskbar, but an having no luck.

CeIIular In reply to MixenDixon [2009-12-28 05:26:37 +0000 UTC]
Try the SetParent API.
It's pretty simple, it's just:
SetParent(Me.handle,TaskbarHandle)
You have to find the handle of the taskbar first though.
Hope that helps

CeIIular In reply to MixenDixon [2009-12-29 23:54:25 +0000 UTC]
If your child window is an Alphablended window and you're doing this on Vista or Window 7 with Aero Enabled, then it won't work.
If you're not and it's invisible, then your window is somewhere off the screen. So after you use SetParent, try changing the location of your child window to (0,0).

MixenDixon In reply to CeIIular [2009-12-30 15:47:58 +0000 UTC]
Okay, the window wasn't Alpha-blended (thanks for the tip, though, I planned on alpha-blending it later), but I'll try resetting the location.

If you are asking me...then no, it is underneath the task-bar. If i extend your showdesktop button, making the pixel size very large, i can clearly see it underneath windows 7's taskbar.

Nice! But when my Windows Vista with Aero turns its theme to Windows Basic the button doesn't seem to change with it. Last version there was a "refresh" selection on the settings but this version doesn't have it. Does it have auto-refresh?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CeIIular In reply to Kryptical13 [2009-12-27 18:16:02 +0000 UTC]
The button in this version (or the last one) doesn't use Vista's Aero, it just emulates it. So no matter what your theme is, it will always be glass like.
One question, does this button stay on top of your taskbar or does it sometimes go under it? Because a lot of people have been having problems with it going under their taskbar.
Thanks

Kryptical13 In reply to CeIIular [2009-12-27 19:14:21 +0000 UTC]
Oh I see. What I'm trying to say is that the old version (1.020) had a refresh option and this one doesn't. Sometimes when I start a full screen game, it turns the Aero theme to Windows Vista Basic (makes everyting NOT transparent). I am wondering if SD 1.040 would auto refresh so it would match my taskbar.

It stays on top of the taskbar every time. I'm using Vista 32X.

CeIIular In reply to Kryptical13 [2009-12-27 19:48:43 +0000 UTC]
Yes it autorefreshes.
The only difference between 1.040 and 1.020 is that 1.040 autorefreshes. Both of them go ontop of your taskbar so if your taskbar has a fake show desktop button, it will look like they over lap.
Thanks for the fast reply
