Notes: I had the idea of a corset with somehow locking gears down the back, but I wasn't sure how the mechanism would work. A quick Google search of "gear locking mechanism" brought me to the reference image I've linked, which made it all come together in my head. Not quite my original image, which was like a zig-zag of gears down the back, but I don't know how I'd make such a setup lock. This works. I imagine this is a view of the back of the corset, but it can absolutely be the front if that's how you'd like it best!
The idea is exactly as is shown. For each lock, the larger gear lays over the latch "saws", while the smaller gear fits into the notches of the "saws" but must also be thick enough to fit also into the notches of the larger gear. In this way, manual turning of the large gear will thus turn the smaller gear, which will thus move the "saws" in opposite directions, either into or out of the latches on both sides. Once in the latches, the whole mechanism can be locked shut by turning the key. Turning the key will cause two pins to either extend or retract. When extended, they block one "saw" from moving back and the other from being pulled out. When retracted, the "saws" are free to move when the large gear is manually turned. Naturally, both latches would have to be unlocked for turning the gear to work. Perhaps a separate key for each latch on the corset is in order? (;
I've also just seen a flaw in the design... once only somewhat unlocked, the small gear has no way to "grab" the bottom saw again. Thus, the large gear would have to be be able to move it, but then it would be moving in the wrong direction... Hmm... maybe if I had more patience, I could draw two more interlocking gears connected to the small one to wrap around the large gear (without touching) to move the bottom saw instead. But of course, I'm lazy and just spent hours on this, so we're going to have to live with this
BETTER YET, I could put a small gear in the middle that doesn't touch the saws at all, with a large gear on either side that, because of the separation of the small gear in the middle, will always move in the same direction. This way both saws will always be "grabbed" by the notches of at least one of the large gears that will move them in the desired direction when turned. Problem solved with the least amount of gears. Right?

Oh my! That looks sexy!Β
Perhaps an alternative would be using ratchet straps?Β www.timothywood.co.uk/productsβ¦
If you could repaint the ratchet itself into a brown or brass color and replace the tie down with an appropriate material that should do the trick and it's pretty much off the shelf.
In addition, a small hole could be drilled in the side of the ratchet so a padlock could be looped through.

That is a diabolic concept. Clothing, in this case a corset, that can't be removed by he wearer.Β What a fantastic form of discipline and control

I do love the concept of locking clothing

Lets make that locking clothing something that will restrict, but not prevent mobility.Β The corset, laced quite tightly, of course, very high heeled shoes or boots possible a size or two too small, hobble skirt that would reduce the wearers gate, gloves so tight that finger movement is difficult.Β Rubber is my favorite for any of these things, with steampunk adding another level . I hope I'm not taking this too far for you. I love the fantasy though. Mobile but impeded and unable to remove any of the outfit

I'm not very mechanically minded, so I doubt if I fully understand what it does. What's the advantage over straps and padlocks?

Oh, I thought it was some way of winding the corset tighter without unlocking it. I'm always looking for easy ways to make the predicament worse.

Oh, that's a great idea though, and I'm sure that could be done! With just some adjustment on the latches (which currently only lock at one tightness), it could be arranged so you can lock it tighter or looser, thus pulling the edges of the corset closer/tighter. Maybe not mechanically minded, but creative~
