Edit:I NEVER SAID IN HERE THAT ANIME IS NOT ART, PLEASE STOP SPAMMING MY FRONT PAGE AND SENDING ME NOTES, ALL YOU'RE DOING IS MAKING YOURSELF LOOK LIKE A DUMB ASS BECAUSE I LAUGH AND CLICK THE X BUTTON EVERY TIME I SEE ONE, YOU ARE NOT EFFECTING ME WHAT SO EVER SO GIVE IT UP.Read the description before you comment and make yourself look stupid.
Comments now enabled because I'm sick of my page being spammed with comments I could care less to read, realize that you posting a comment here does not mean I will read it or respond, I will likely not do either of the two.
Ok before you read this or flame me remember that this is MY OWN opinion and I am not in anyway trying to change yours.
I have NOTHING against anime at all, it is not my favorite but I do not hate it, in fact I do enjoy a few animes such as Wolf's Rain, Evangelion, Hellsing, Excel Saga, and a few more. HOWEVER I am SICK and TIRED of people saying "anime is the best!" "I love anime!" "look I can draw anime!" "anime is so original!" when no one is really saying bluntly that anime sucks and that it is not art. and then I go to the front page of DA and see nothing but huge eyed anime girls with balloon like breasts, nipples the size of salami slices, and slutty clothing with the letters "kya" sketched next to it. All these pieces look as if they were drawn by the same person. I am NOT at all saying anime is not a cool style, it is an awesome style if used properly.
You can look through my favorites and see many anime pictures by artists here on DA I enjoy. What bugs me is when people claim their anime has style opposed to any other anime. Anime is a vast area of art, they're cartoons. People who obsess over anime characters as if they were real need to get out more.
I think if more artist stopped looking at pictures of anime girls or whatever that other people drew and just basically tracing it, and began to develop their own style this place and the art community as a whole would be a lot better.
Also this does not by any means mean I enjoy dogs with huge ears, anime eyes, 'kawaii' features, hair, and the cartoon animal style a lot of people share. This stamp focuses on anime but it goes for all art that needs more stylizing.

I used to be on of the people that just did animu, and that's all I ever tried and did. I don't know what broke me but I gave up on anime completely and have a realistic and yet cartoony looking style. I can look at it and know that it is MINE. I used to ask my friend after every drawing oes it look anime enough!?" to now I ask "It doesn't look anime does it!?"
I'm not asking or begging for publicity but if you go to my gallery and look at the then and now, I think you'll see where I'm coming from. I like this stamp <3

I am aware of this problem among the community and I am ashamed of being associated in any way with this. I admit that my work is mostly anime/manga-style and that's mostly because it's so EASY, compared to so many others and, if used right, can look pretty badass. Unfortunately, there are moments in which I feel limited because of this (in face types, races etc. I mean, asian people don't LOOK asian!
) and for quite some time I'm struggling to get past this phase but somehow it leads me back to square one.
Everything I know is mostly self-taught. Not cool at all.
Glad that at least I managed to make my style somewhat closer to semi-realistic and anatomically corect (or at least that's what I'm trying to... ). Right now I want to learn to be more expressive using lines and my characters look less stiff (which is quite a problem for the average anime-style artist and I find it really annoying too) and developing a more cartoonish style.
... I currently am going trough a mean artists' block. Damn you anime constraints.
Sorry for the rant, you can go on and ignore me now...

Anime is slowly becoming a crutch for many artists. I've noticed that many so-called artists who adopt this style have serious trouble drawing PoC. I remember asking several artists to draw concept art for a few of the characters in my novel, and what I got, was the same each time.
Instead of an actual black person with their natural facial and skin features, I received a "deep fried white person". The most common depiction of a PoC in Anime.
- Universal, copy-and-paste, one-size- fits-all, facial features
- No lighter skin tone on their palms and feet
- Long flowing straight hair (mainly an issue on the males), etc...
It just created a total "facedesk moment", and was another example of the problem this popular drawing style. Lack of people who take this style and can evolve beyond it. Something a real artist does.

Right dude, for example, if you tell one of these guys:
-Can you draw a portrait using only pencils or with oils?
Or:
-Can you make a woman based on the eight heads and with well distributed propotions?
I asure you they wont, realism is complicated(i am actually developing my skill with pencils oils and watercolors) and the reason that makes them keep with manga is to stick in a level 1 for all the life.

Well perhaps saying "nobody" is kind of harsh, as many people like anime. It's just that there is a negative stigma attached to it by some people.
There's nothing wrong with Anime in itself, but it's a good idea to evolve beyond it. Many Art Professors and teachers all over the country are starting to become less and less impressed with the style, because so many people draw in it.

I completely understand what you mean by this. And I agree. I do draw anime quite often, but at the same time, I am just starting off and exploring different styles. I hear people saying that anime is "the best" a lot. Most of the time, people draw the same exact way with this style, but just add different stories or concepts to it. But I do feel that you can also create different versions of anime, as well as create pieces that are your own and completely original. But this falls into the part where you say "it is an awesome style if used properly". I beleive, both from my own experience and from what I've seen, that people sometimes use other Anime pictures to trace, to benifit their own art, but I think this is where artists go wrong because they need to find their own style, and come up with their own design. I think that anime is an EXTREMELY well known style, and I think that more people should branch off of anime and create something even cooler and more different than anyone else's work.

you've made some good points, but a lot of people who draw anime - at least the ones that I know, myself included - taught themselves how to draw, and have branched out into their own style of art. :/ I do agree with you on the whole "balloon sized breasts" thing, though, and obsessing over anime characters like their real is weird, too.

I think you can have your own style of anime/manga drawing if you want or you can choose to leach off of someone else style. the masses of "Anime artist" choose the latter instead of branching off and going more on their own Because its "hard" for them to change. I've also seen a LOT of good work of Anime people belittled or berated just because they are in a different style then show or just plane look a little bit different. kinda sad really...
Anyway, I have to agree with you on some points. I'm going to muder the next person I see leaching of Arina Tanemura's manga style.

Anime isn't a style so much as an actual genre. Anime is a shortened word for animation that the Japanese use to refer to their cartoons. Since Japan relies so heavily on animation they have basically made their own genre and generic style. If someone wanted to be technical, I draw anime, you draw anime, most all artists on this site "draw anime" The problem is is that most of them don't differ from the norm and accelerate in their artwork, they stay to their comfort zone which usually consists of tracing. Also props on the user name, I used to be a huge Hiei fan girl.

There's more than just anime and realism. There are a hundred different ways to draw an eye alone. Or hair. Or a hand. It's all about finding a style you're comfortable with and working hard to make it look less generic/anime-esque. ^^
