Surprise! We wanted to also include a second opinion and perspective on color so we asked Mel Herring (better known to the community as PurpleKecleon) to once again create a tutorial for us but this time regarding color specifically and her tips, thoughts, and advice on the subject matter of breaking down color. She stresses the importance of contrast and working with that in mind while choosing your colors.

Appreciate the thought, but this is probably the worst color advice I've ever seen. It doesn't inspire confidence to take the course when the examples given by PK are flat out bad. :\

I've got a feeling that the images don't showcase properly her true mastery of colour theory. It's not that the images are worse/different from her older work, but this comic (where all the images are taken from) was a departure in style that showcased an interesting mesh of colours that enhanced its strange, otherwordly yet simultaneous light-hearted mood. Maybe not the best to use for an impression in a colour course however.

Well I think you're probably overly optimistic. PK has gone on record to say that she doesn't care about putting in the work she used to, and prefers quantity over quality. I don't know about you but I sure don't think someone who has gotten so lazy in the craft will make for a good teacher. I used to like her stuff, but even the comic these are from has gone downhill these days. Her new obsession with hot magenta and cyan is a painful mess to look at and everything she does now pales in comparison to her work even 2 years ago.
Since you follow the comic did you see her first attempt at "Try, Try, Again" with the 7 sins? Never have I seen such bad use of colors in my life, gaudy pink and magenta mixed directly next to blinding turquoise, green, cyan and yellow. Not something a "color expert" would use...

You're probably right actually; maybe I'm just clinging to old admiration. I have to concede that a lot of her recent work are rather same-ish in magenta overusage. It's a shame she locked her old work away. She did some of her best works colour-wise with her Pokemon illustrations. Incidentally, no, I never did see the first attempt of that comic. I've been a little in and out on dA so I don't follow anything on here that well anymore.

Oh yeah, her Pokemon art was definitely some of her best work. I would say she definitely had a good grasp on it in the past and you could probably learn something by studying her old art before she went full 100% saturation on everything (a big no in good color comps) with recycled color schemes she spits out these days.

But, yeah, you're right, she does go full saturation all the time nowadays. Like I said, I used to think it was an experimental phase related to her new comic Floraverse -which I did enjoy for the first several chapters (have to catch up). Kinda a bummer realizing that it's step backwards for her.

Yup I remember that tutorial, a real oldie. I also enjoyed her Floraverse comic before it was ruined by laziness.
So I'm going to gather a bunch of her best works and make a journal post about it, if you're interested in studying from her colors then I'm letting you know it'll still be possible. She may have all her art in storage and scrubbed her off site accounts, but that doesn't mean much when the internet is forever!

Agreed. Most of these images show a very very poor colour selection, and insufficient contrast to help the viewer see what they're supposed to see. They end up being confusing and overwhelming for the eye.

IF you're a minor I'd advise not looking into it because there's so much damning art that PK has drawn with fetishizing abuse, rape or pedophilia.
NSFW art isn't bad by itself but she has a long history of trying to get minors to look at porn. Especially when she ran the PMDE group on DA and still has the same habit to this day of "accidentally" posting NSFW material to her SFW blogs. Marl, Eevee (who both live with her) and PK/GP are all pretty well documented for being into it. A large reason that her artwork is in storage is to try to sweep everything associated with her artist handle PK and association with Pokemon art (like the PMDE artwork) under the rug, but she does the same pedophilia thing under the new name GP with her Flora content.

I didn't know that PK is interested on doing such ... disgusting things. Like, I knew something was up with them when there was some shit going down on tumblr but I'm kinda more surprised to find this out.
