Tutorial: The Importance of "Throwaways"Artist: Tim Von Rueden (vonn)

Hey everyone, this short video is on the importance on what I call “throwaway” art pieces. That doesn’t mean it’s bad work or something you are dissatisfied with. Rather a throwaway is a piece created with no defined direction and no limitations. With this mindset you are given freedom to create whatever and anything you want which allows you to have fun, be more expressive, and more carefree. This leads to experimentation and discovery.

So have you been inspired lately and want to try something new? DO IT. Don’t make excuses like “It doesn’t fit my style”. Excuses hold artists back!

I also talk about the difference between working hard and working smart. While I appreciate the artists that work hard, tirelessly working hours into the night, this isn’t the route I want you to circulate for yourself. I want you to work hard AND work smart. Because the artists the know the difference are the ones that push their skill set faster and work more efficiently. So be self aware, let go of limitations, and strive to be the best artist you can be!

This is a good tutorial and a great video, but it's pretty useless for me since I don't have photoshop. Medibang (and Sai as far as I can tell) have shit brushes that fight against you more than they help. In photoshop you can control the amount of color you want mixed by the pressure you apply in the tip of your pen, but keep the same opacity. With my programs everything just turns out crap and it takes way too long to get the same effect. The painting that you made only took you an hour, in my programs it takes four. So I was wondering if you could help me out somehow with that, do you know of a free painting program that I could use to paint like you do?

Please help me out with this, it's really frustrating me. It seems that my progression as an artist and the development of my skill is constantly being hindered by technical difficulties.

Photoshop cs2 is for free by the way. Just go to the official Adobe page.

If you're looking for a free software, I've heard mixed reviews about Gimp but it has the same opacity transfer as Photoshop that you may be looking for. Hope this helps!

Yes! I have GIMP, and the opacity with pens works just like that. But when you do line-art.. The lines aren't very sharp. And apparently, you can change what pen pressure you have somewhere on there. So you might be able to get sharp lines.

Of course Sai for example behaves quite a bit different than Photoshop but it's not necessarily worse, just different.
I don't know about much about Medibang, but I actually prefer Sai over Photoshop for pure painting (Photoshop is great for other things like colour correction and stuff).
And as he says in the video, just spend some time experimenting with your program and you'll get used to it over time^^

I've spent plenty of time "experimenting" and "getting used to" my programs. It's a waste, until somebody shows me how to use them properly, nothing's going to get done.

Well there are a lot of tutorials for Sai online and if you have any specific questions about Sai I could help you if you want^^
But if Sai is just not the right programm for you, you could try Gimp (it's a free alternative to photoshop, if you haven't heard of it).

I hate gimp for the same reason I hate sai. No pressure sensitivity.

Sure, I have pressure sensitivity in sai for about fort five minutes after I reboot my pc, then it's gone again. Even if I restart my drivers. That's why I'm forced to use medibang. That and I want some actual texture to my paintings.

Gimp has pressure sensativity if you change it's settings also you could look into fire Alpaca I love it.

Ok, that's weird I never had this problem with Sai. I think I can slowly understand why you don't like working with it.
You could try Krita (another free program), I haven't tried it myself but perhaps you are able to get pressure sensitivity to work with it.
Well I hope you find a program that works for you soon^^

Hi Usually if I spent my drawing for a long time, I started to hate my drawing (Like this one, I spent a week to draw it and it's still lineart). I hate it (Dunno why, seems something wrong because it takes so long to finished) and it end up on recycle bin ;-; Is it why I must not spend too much time for doing 1 work?

I appreciate any advice

It sounds like you are stressing out over your art-work! The most important thing to do is to not trash your old stuff. You'll need it for later. Study your butt off, right now you may not have the technical skill that your eye wants your hand to have, but if you work towards it over time you will get better! I also suggest picking up some art books, such as Michael Hamptons Design and Invention, or Scott Robertsons "how to draw". Don't stress out over art, and if anything scribble your heart out cause atleast you are working in the right step more than the people who arn't working towards it at all! -Joe

This. This is what I definitely need to do soon. I've been feeling really unmotivated lately... so maybe playing around with this can help me improve and/or just get some motivation back!

Not at the moment, but we work on making every tutorial non-software specific so that you can apply the teachings in any painting software.

haha, i'm so inconsistent that all my drawings end up being 'throwaways'. but i guess that's better than limiting myself!
