Tutorial: Using a Base Sketch for CharactersArtist: Tim Von Rueden

In this Citizen tutorial Tim Von Rueden  takes you through how a base sketch used as a brush can be a great way to start without having to copy and paste the sketch over and over again. Having the standard 3rd quarter view pose is a typical start for characters and having the bones as the foundation helps out with having accurate proportions.

This tutorial is a basic look at how to create character concept art quickly but efficiently. This way your focus can be solely focused on the concept you create rather than making sure the proportions are accurate and set in place. I also do a quick run at creating a brush in a short amount of time to make sure you can save it and keep going. Above is a step by step on what is covered in the tutorial as well as a look at the final results.

It doesn't work that way, "tricks" don't make you a good artist, hard work and dedication do.

I didn't mean it like that, this will help, its a quick way to create concept art.

But i can see how what i said could sound like that. CX

Well, it's not really necessary when you know how to sketch something up quickly, but i suppose i got your comment wrong.

I have anatomy down, but detailing a character is what i have trouble with, so i meant i could use this to make quick bases instead of the method i use now for detail practice.

But i really didnt make that clear when i posted the original comment.

That makes a lot of sense, same for me really, anatomy is something i'm good at, but i feel like if i'm so good at it i don't need to copy the base, that's only necessary for character sheets.. I get stuck when it comes to light and values, which sucks because that's really important.

Very cool!
The only downside is that you have to be 100% sure that your initial base is correct. I could easily see someone (a newbie) copying their mistakes into several different drawings if their brush sketch is incorrect. (Though the same could be said about any picture, really.)

I think this should be mostly used for brainstorming, really, so as long as there aren't major issues, it should be fine. For a finished product I reckon you should start over with something more polished and more representative of the character and what you're trying to express through their portrayal.
