Description Okay, so here's a tutorial for making a chainmaille dragon. A lot of people have been asking for it, so I went and made one.

If you've seen the Dragon Keychain tutorial on the M.A.I.L. site [link] then you'll probably notice that this is mostly a modified version.
I played around with his original one for a bit to find something that works for me, and I feel that there are a few improvements in the design here. At least for something that works as a bracelet instead of a keychain.

This is also on my etsy page:

Great tutorial! I've made a few chainmaille dragons with another tutorial but I like how you make your dragon's head! I'll certainly be trying your way with that part!

Thank you very much for this tutorial! Where do you get your jump rings for chainmaille?Β

I usually go with either The Ring Lord: theringlord.com/cart/
or C&T Designs:Β www.candtdesigns.com/

I prefer C&T because they're in my home state, and they give a better wholesale discount, but both are pretty awesome.

Is this supposed to be hp 3 or hp 4? using 16 swg 1/4 seizes up on hp4 for me :/

Ok thank you, I'm having issues with the part where you put the rings trhough the hp, i got it on one side, but on the other it just isn't looking right and doesn't line up with the other side when I get it to look right O,o

Did you make sure to make the second strand of HP in reverse? Β They have to mirror each other or it wont work. Β Here's an article I found about doing reversed HP: www.mailleartisans.org/article…

Oof. 3-4 hours later, my dragon lives! Thanks to you and your lovely tutorial. ^__^

Tragically, my 16 gauge wire was too thick for the tail bits... I ended up using 19g 9/64" rings instead of 20g 1/8" rings, which looks well enough.

I also ended up using a 3/8" 16g ring for the last head-connector, the one that goes through the scale. I can't imagine being able to get a 5/16" ring through that... I still had to mash the poor 3/8" into a slight oval to manage it.

Whew. Other than chainmail cubes, this was my first foray into sculpture, and what an adventure it was..!

Would definitely agree with ~Reyntrannin on adding AR to any additional tutorials, because I bet something like this would look absolutely awesome mini-sized. I'd also suggest making sure you have the ring sizes at each reference to them. You were good about that in every step but one (step at 4th picture from the bottom), so I'm guessing it was probably just an oversight.

Lastly, thank you for putting this up. Even with a dying camera, your pictures were well-taken and showed me what I needed to see to complete this tricky critter. Your directions, too, were well done: generally clear and precise. Despite being new to sculpture, I was able to complete the dragon. He's chilling on my arm now. Thanks again!

I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. For a first time tutorial, this is extraordinarily clear and well laid out, making the plan for the sculpture very easy to follow.

Been doing mail for quite a while and just wanted to give you a shout out for how nicely done this is. Only change I would recommend if you continue would be to also include AR's that will work for the design. That way, more experienced maillers can scale things up or down if they need to.

So, out of my piles of random sized rings, I measured all of them and counted out the ones in the right sizes to make the head, as I figured out a different way to make the body. I just finished the first eye, but the whole head seems really loose and moves around a lot. I keep having to readjust it in order to put the next ring in. Is it supposed to be like this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChainedBeauty In reply to TkRainy [2013-03-24 01:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Not really. It should have some play in it, but not so much where it looses its shape. The eyes will flop around a bit until you get the head connected to the body in different parts. That should make it a bit more solid.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TkRainy In reply to ChainedBeauty [2013-03-26 06:44:08 +0000 UTC]

Okay. Thank you! I ended up shoving a scale into the head for some extra stability as well... haha!

ChainedBeauty In reply to TkRainy [2013-03-26 15:58:56 +0000 UTC]

I've noticed sometimes that different suppliers version of a 16 gauge can be slightly off, and sometimes I'll have rings that are too loose or way too tight for a project.

TkRainy In reply to ChainedBeauty [2013-03-26 22:26:21 +0000 UTC]

That just happened to me when I followed a few different tutorials on making a scale flower. Turns out with all of the rings I have, I simply cannot make one. Now I have a ton of scales that I can't make flowers with. More dragons, I guess?

So, I ADORE this pattern!!! But is it actually 6-in-1 for the head? There aren't enough rings to do that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChainedBeauty In reply to ZafrinaBlack [2012-06-04 16:36:49 +0000 UTC]

It is, even though its three rows of five. The middle-most rings are connected to six, which the outside ones are fewer.

JUST finished this piece - though as a semi-beginner, I twiddled a bit and changed some things around to make it easier to me to understand/remember/follow. Oher than that - super great tutorial. Pictures are up on my space here, still learning how, if possible, to link in a comment if at all. Thank you so much for posting this!
