Why are some of the capitol ships facing backward?

They aren't. I can assure you that. Otherwise copy the picture and circle the ship that you think are.

I'm only saying because I was pretty sure the bulge was the bow of the Capitol ship and the profile of the battle fleet has their cruisers facing forward and the C.C.S.s facing backward.

You're right about the Flagships facing the wrong way but they also face that way in the game. It doesn't matter though, this was just meant as a battle overview, giving statistics of numbers and locations.
