~AzKailani wrote to me the other day, asking if I could give some tips on how to draw, particularly on how I do chibi-style. I've always believed that my style is not really anything special (as the characters look more like I've drawn them as kids than actual chibi), but I told her that I'd try to show her how I do it anyway.

Well... my camera work while I was drawing this pic was less than remarkable... I didn't notice that the digital camera's resolution had been set way, waaaaay low when I started taking pictures. Gah, so much for that idea (I had been too lazy to scan after each and every step). Oh, well. Maybe I could try to make the pictures clearer someday. For now, I hope everyone could still see what I was doing, at least.

For a nice "how to" on the more common "chibification" process, try this: [link ]

You can also look into this if you're curious on how I draw with guidelines.

(Edit) Since a lot of people were asking, I used the following pencils for this drawing:
- A Staedtler karat aquarell colored pencil for the blue lines.
- A sharpened Staedtler HB pencil for the black lines.

But really, any light blue colored pencil, or typical lead pencil, will probably do.

What pencil did you use to draw teh sketch? ^^

The blue sketch was drawn with a Staedtler karat aquarell colored pencil (it's a little difficult to erase though, so if you're going to use it, draw lightly). For "inking", I just traced over with a Staedtler HB pencil.

So, you used a colored pencil? Like, for coloring? x3

I think so. I mean, I didn't get the blue colored pencil out of a box (I bought it on its own), but I'm assuming that it could still be used for coloring.

chaneljay In reply to crystalofpsyche [2005-12-07 01:15:12 +0000 UTC]

I scanned it via grayscale. If the blue pencil is light enough, it won't be seen. If it does get included in the scanned picture, though, it's usually lighter than the lineart, so I adjust the levels (in Photoshop) of the pic. If still necessary, I tweak around with the brightness and contrast until it disappears.
