Hey,
I made this fractal with your tutorial: [link] I had a sky looking fractal at first but then I discovered spirals in the shape... so I ended up doing something a bit different

Haha, there's absolutely nothing wrong with doing that! In fact, I tend to divert from tutorials all the time when I try using them. It's always nice to see what can be found within fractals, because there's so much room for discovery. It looks really cool, thanks for sharing it

It takes a while to get the hang of these fractals. They're very fun to work with, but there is a lot of experimentation required.

Hello ! I've been trying for some time, however, I don't manage to get a correct "streak" when scaling down Xforms 2, 3 and 4. What do you mean by spreading color speed ? And does the disposition of the triangles affect it ?

Thanks a lot ! Looking forward to making things happen

PS - er, I used Apo7x. Chaotica doesn't like me. *g*

Oona1960 In reply to Oona1960 [2012-05-27 23:32:11 +0000 UTC]

I've used Chaotica before and for some silly reason, it fails. Possibly this is a weird case of operator error.

Manually played around with the settings and I would get a stretch, but not a motion trail. At least, not for anything close to the parameters set. I know I'm doing something wrong here. While I play around, I may figure it out.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

ChaosFissure In reply to Oona1960 [2012-05-27 21:34:03 +0000 UTC]

Why not I use it to render most of my stuff and it generally renders things quickly, and has nice curves support too :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Oona1960 In reply to ??? [2012-05-27 20:14:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! Gotta confess, mine never got to that "fast motion" state there at the beginning. Instead, I just opened up a basic leaf pattern and adjusted the settings till they matched the tutorials. *g* Obviously not the same. However, I got a fairly decent result, which I recolored and tweaked and called it "Afterbirth". *g*

ChaosFissure In reply to Oona1960 [2012-05-27 21:40:05 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem

You didn't get that "speed trail" at the beginning? That's a very critical element - are you manually clicking and dragging, manually rotating, and manually scaling the flames? If you do that, you should have a bit more control over what is going on. If you show me what you have (i.e. paramswise), I'd be willing to look for it and try to see how to get that working.

I was not totally happy. I hoped to get something with as much depth as you did but then I ended up with "Stormy Water" and completely lost the cloud effect Perhaps I try some more

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosFissure In reply to baba49 [2012-04-25 23:40:36 +0000 UTC]

The gradient plays a huge role in depth. That, and color curves in chaotica can do wonders to adding a sense of depth to an image. When choosing a gradient, don't use one with too many unique colors, and make sure you liberally play with the color scheme.

If you can't find a gradient within Apo that you like, then look through images you've created, save them as jpgs, and you can import them into apophysis as a gradient. I've done this myself, and find that it can do quite a lot.

Thank you for your kind feedback.
I like the smooth palette option in Apo. I made lots of gradients from my photos or psp graphics but the choice that comes with apo is good too. There are endless possibilities when changing them using hue saturation frequency etc.

More importantly, I learned a general technique for Apophysis that I'll probably be using frequently (though not following the specific steps you describe). So even if I don't give you specific credit, your influence will show up in my work! I really appreciate your effort in making this tutorial.

ChaosFissure In reply to rsidwell [2012-04-25 16:16:57 +0000 UTC]

I consider making tutorials a way of helping the community at large, and to an extent teaching some of what I know.

If you learned something from it, that's all I could have hoped for

I must say, I really like your "bubble streams" piece - the contrast the bubbles have on the rest of the image is striking; it doesn't overwhelm the image, but it adds a very nice bit of detail!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

greyartspace In reply to ??? [2012-04-21 20:15:14 +0000 UTC]

I tried to use this tutorial with mixed results. Being brand new to Apophysis, it was a learning process, haha. In any case, I eventually got the "painterly" look I was hoping for, which you can see used as the background here: [link] I think I've learned this would really work better with something less monochromatic and hope to try it again with better results in the future! Thank you so much for making this tutorial!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosFissure In reply to greyartspace [2012-04-25 16:23:14 +0000 UTC]

Apophysis definitely has a steep learning curve, that's for sure XD

I do have a question though - was the tutorial easy enough to understand? I wanted to try to make it informative, but possible to replicate by all people who try to use Apophysis - beginners and end users included. Was there anything you felt should have been explained more clearly, or anything that might have been missing?

For a first fractal, it definitely is quite unique. The background is nice, and the use of a fractal to act as a harp is cool. The integration of the harp with the background is a bit static, as the two elements do not interact with each other, but that would require some heavy postwork were you to try integrating them.

I'd be more than happy to try offering help with colors and stuff if you wish

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

greyartspace In reply to ChaosFissure [2012-04-25 17:18:07 +0000 UTC]

It wasn't hard to understand I think, it just took several tries to get things to look right. I also didn't get as fancy with some of the detailing stuff you did but I'll probably try that out next time! Thank you for thinking the lyre is cool! You're right that it comes out really static and flat. It was one of those things that sounded better in my head than it appears once executed.

As for colors... I really don't know what the issue was. It would look very.. like there was only one color, and not enough contrast between brightness and shadows. Doing the stuff in Chaotica from the 2nd part of this tutorial didn't really seem to help it as I would lose the shade of specific green I was going for. My best guess would be that the gradient I used was too monochromatic but only with more time and understanding of what I'm doing will I really get an idea if that's true or not. Also being more open to trying out more colors for the sake of what looks best will help a lot! In any case, I appreciate the offer for help! I'll keep that in mind next time I try this out!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosFissure In reply to greyartspace [2012-04-25 23:45:57 +0000 UTC]

Either the gradient didn't have enough colors in it or you were using the same color speed on all the xforms..as I don't have the params to the flame, I really can't help you much there.

And yes, I always enjoy trying to help out...it's cathartic If you have any questions, would like to see me make one of these and follow along live, or anything else, don't hesitate to ask.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

greyartspace In reply to ChaosFissure [2012-04-26 00:51:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I know for sure I tried messing around with the colors of each xform but I don't know. It's not a big deal, I still learned from it.

It could be cool seeing you make one live! Where do you normally announce that sort of thing?

As much as I would have liked to enter, I got busy :3 The dynamics of the clouds are nice - they feel billowing and fluffy.

I would be interested to seeing how it would have worked with other background colors, though, because it does seem a tad bit dark...

Thank you for sharing I'm glad you enjoyed it!
