"Tell me, phoenix, what was it like to defy death? What did you have to endure to walk these lands in spite of fate?"

"It was a struggle. All that remained of my spirit was a burning river of fire. My most precious memories roared torrentially around me. They burnt as they filled my veins and rung through my mind as painful screams as they reminded my spirit who I was and what I stood for. With each additional memory, I felt like my being would burst, unable to contain the walls of information pouring into me, yet with each memory the pain diminished as I gained the ability to understand what I was assimilating. I became the raging river of fire.

Once I realized this, the world changed. I became aware of something existing around me. My own light shone into the distance as I looked around for something recognizable, but all I could see were formless shapes. Only later did I realized these were fragments of the world and people I had interacted with.

One of these shapes was more vivid than any of the fragments. I could not recognize it, but it resonated of sadness, anger, and hopelessness. It tore at my soul to see something in such distress, even though I could not understand what it was saying. Lacking a better course of action, I spoke to the figure in a language I could not understand. It replied with words I could not interpret, however I could feel the emotion they contained. I responded, relating the fragments of memories that had recently flooded my mind. The figure became surprised as I continued talking, and I could sense the hopelessness being rejected and replaced with hope, its posture replacing sadness with impossibly vivid enthusiasm, and the anger with raw happiness. I could understand these emotions, and these emotions let me interpret the strange words the figure returned to me. Something clicked. In that moment, I could both understand what it was saying, and saw the ghost settle into a shape I recognized all too well: you."

My train of though was interrupted by a voice that almost went unheard. "So that's what happened. I'm so sorry."

I looked over at the girl, who seemed to be on the verge of tears, and resumed answering her question.

"You proceeded to guide me through the world, and helped add meaning to the shapes and events my mind can now vividly recall. Were it not for you, I would still be lost in my own memories."
