Description Just playin' with Illustrator, since I haven't touched that program in yeaaaars, not counting making a resume with it. And I drew Chloe, because I hadn't drawn her much lately.

I'm kinda' glad this looks just like the work I do with my usual (Photoshop), because that means the program isn't fighting against me. XP

Very nice! Did you color it in Illusterator as well? If so, that must of been anoying. >_< I use illustratior for lineart and photoshop for coloring.

Did you use the brush tool for the line art? A comment above made me think so so if you did, how did you get the brush to not get ugly? (As in, not uneven and gross)

Yup, the whole thing was in Illustrator, I wanted to be sure I could finish a picture with it only. And yup, I used the brush tool. To make the tapered lines like the one for her nose, I created a brush with an elongated oval for the brush shape. And then for the connecting lines that didn't need a taper, I drew those with the regular rounded brush. I drew the stroke, then I made the small adjustments to each point individually, and also adjusted the stroke size. It definitely took longer than my usual method of brush strokes. XD

That's the sexiest chair I've ever seen.

Oh she has a lovely nose and beautiful bedroom eyes. 8D

I really like her pose, and how she fits so snuggling around that chair.

You know, one thing I've always admired about your art is how it's so clean that I could believe you'd done it with Illustrator if I didn't know you used Photoshop. (I have a bad history with Illustrator myself. I keep telling myself to learn to use it, but I can't seem to get past the initial mental stumbling block of throwing away most of what I'm accustomed to doing in graphics programs.)

I like the sense of her attitude I get from her pose and expression.

Thanks! 8D And yeah, Illustrator is a big nightmare to learn. There are a lot of elements in it that seem so counter to usual drawing practices that you just want to tear out your hair. XD I don't think I'd even touch it if I didn't feel like I'd need to know it for a job or something. XP

Illustrator, you annoy me so...

And yet I wish I still had the trial for when I really WANT to use vectors. XD It's good, though--I couldn't tell from examining it that it was different from your usual stuff either, until you said so. ^^

Yeah, Illustrator is a pain in the butt. I don't think I'd really ever choose to use it unless I really had to. XD

It seems like it would be great for stuff like long outline curves on arms and legs and whatnot.. but I imagine getting her spiky hair line was a pain ?
I haven't tried playing with vectors much...

Actually, it's not as bad as you might think. The Brush tool in Illustrator's pretty nice. You use it like a normal brush, and then when you lift your pen it turns it into a vectored line. So you don't really have to draw a line point-by-point like with the Pen tool, though you might do a bit of line-adjusting.

D8 how did you do it. XDDDDDDDD Was it easier/faster? Turned out great! I love the angle and pose!

ChaosKomori In reply to ThirdPotato [2010-05-12 00:26:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, it wasn't too bad, though it definitely wasn't faster. But I like how clean the lines were, and it wasn't as horribly difficult as I'd feared it might be.

What's the main difference between Illistrator and Photoshop? :/ I hear it's better for working as a professional artist, but I don't know why and I'm so used to Photoshop, I'd hate to learn a (somewhat) whole new program. :'D

ChaosKomori In reply to hubadawaha [2010-05-11 22:14:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, they're both by Adobe, so working with both is very similar (a lot of the keyboard shortcuts are the same, the icons are similar, etc). But where Photoshop is bitmap, Illustrator is vector. That means you're not working with pixels, you're working with paths, curves defined with math and stuff. That means there's no problems with resolution. You could blow an image up big enough to print on a blimp, and it'll still be super-smooth. But that also means you can't just draw normally with a brush and eraser. Think of Illustrator as one big Pen tool from Photoshop. Paths with markers and stuff.

And it's debatable which one is "better" for a professional artist, because it depends on what industry you're going into. Illustrator if you're doing graphic design, for sure, since they'll be making billboards and big stuff. But Photoshop works better if you're, say, a children's book illustrator. (Or maybe even Corel Paint for that, haha)

Wow, great linework here!! I love how it's so smooth, and the pose is great, too! How long did it take you to do this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosKomori In reply to RLFedun [2010-05-11 22:15:24 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, maybe about a couple hours to do the lineart, and another couple for the colors/shading. Part of that time was figuring out what I was doing. XD

Oh, that's not too bad! I would have taken like, two days, Illustrator and I aren't friends. XD
