Description Part 1

Well, I said I'd eventually make a tutorial for my Demon Sculpt , and here it is.

To be honest, it was a rather complicated sculpture, so this is a little more complex than what it takes to make a beginner maquette.

Amazing work - especially the smoothness of it.

Also like the tiny mini-tutorial on makeshift ovens! Genius ^^

This will be my first time messing with this stuff, so I'm wondering what I should make. I'm turning in a portfolio to some art school and my teacher suggested that I toss in some sculpting to show my range of skills to the school and he showed me this link. You don't know how much this helps.

This is the most incredible thing I've ever seen. You are really skilled at sculpting and you've given me some good ideas for what to do with my characters' maquettes. Thanks for putting up this tutorial.

...I think the little oven you made is the most instructive part XDD

I kid I kid. This is very useful, and thank you for making it. Good looking sculpture, too.

very awsome tutorial, helped me with the wing problm. ;D

I gots a question about the heat oven box cause i have big pieces that don't fit in the little oven i have lol XD and don't want to use my moms oven.

i'm trying to make one but i'm still confused on a few stuff.

Is a hot glue gun the same as a heat gun? been looking that up and have nada on it. XD;
If not where you get yours?

Does your box have a vent for the heat to go threw? cause i'm looking at this [link] and um yeah lol XD

Haha, that link you sent is quite an oven box, I like it! XD And no, a hot glue gun dispenses hot glue, and a heat gun dispenses heat. :3 Think of it like a hair dryer that can get to flesh-burning temperatures. (It can be a very dangerous tool!) I got mine from a Harbor Freight tool company for $20, but I think the big hardware stores like Lowe's and Home Depot would probably have it too, though you might have to call ahead and double-check that they have it.

Wow, this is a great tutorial! I like to scupt, so this gives me some nice tips. The alunimum foil bit is great, now I wont wast sculpey when I do big things.

Quick question, did you put the wood base in the oven? Or did you remove it from it's base? I would think if you put it in the oven it would start on fire or get burnt.

PS. Would it ok if I print this out? That way I can just refer to it without going to the computer. I figure I'd ask just in case you might have a problem with it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosKomori In reply to BuzzyBuzz [2008-07-29 03:24:43 +0000 UTC]

Sure, print it if you'd like. :3

And I bake the wood with the maquette. I've secured the skeleton directly to the wood, it'd be impossible for me to remove it from its base anyway. The wood doesn't get burnt or catch fire at all, though some types of wood warp slightly from all the sap in them. Though, one of my classmates actually managed to burn her base. XD She used rubbing alcohol to smooth the clay, and accidentally spilled a lot on the base. Then, when she went to bake it, the alcohol burned up. XD But normally, the wood's just fine.

Wow, thanks for this awesome tutorial! This helps so much.

I have a question, though. You used brass tubing, but is there anything else that you could have used to fulfill the same purpose?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosKomori In reply to tangerine-dragon [2008-07-28 08:33:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, I suppose aluminum tubing could also work, but that stuff is kinda' flimsy and has a tendency to distort a lot. I can't think of any other alternatives, but I suppose if you could find something small and could have one piece fit snugly within the other piece, that could work. Also, if you were working on small pieces, like a hand for instance, you could build the hand on its own separate wire, bake it with a bit of the wire sticking out of the wrist, and then just jab that wire bit into the soft-clay of the arm and continue to work from there. It might not work so well with larger pieces like arms or heads.

Wow--- all of your sculptures/maquettes are so detailed and look like they've been working on with great effort and time!
I want to make a maquette too! They sound fun. ^^
It seems likes all of those supplies cost a lot though.

That Makeshift oven AMAZED me. o.o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosKomori In reply to Jaz-DE-Leau [2008-07-24 08:04:50 +0000 UTC]

The supplies aren't too much. Really all you need is a base, some screws, a bit of wire, and the sculpey. The sculpey is probably the priciest part, at $10 a box. ._.

meggyc [2008-07-21 13:45:57 +0000 UTC]

That makeshift oven looks like it goes against so many health codes.

Great tutorial, and I really do think the burnt mouth turned out to be a happy accident. It really does add alot of character to the maquette.

Yeah, the burnt part turned out to work for the better. More than I can say for the other times I burnt my maquettes in that class, lol!

Holy cheeses this is amazing! Oh man I love the shots where you can see all the wee details! Eee! I love this so much omg *0*

Wow you made your own oven? alkghaj What if you caught the place on fire !? Still pretty neat though.

How long does it usually take to bake? I have awful bad luck with oven timing ;^;

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ChaosKomori In reply to VioletVampireVixen [2008-07-21 23:44:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my roommate wasn't too happy that I was making my own oven with a cardboard box and a heat gun. XD But I figured heat guns didn't set things on fire, they just melted things.

As for baking sculpey, you can leave it in the oven longer than you need to, and it won't hurt it. It's the temperature that can wreck a sculpt, not the time at all. You can even bake it at a lower temp for a longer time, and it's better than a high temp for short time. And the horrible cracks that can form in sculpey come from too rapid a change in temp, not from the baking process. So it's actually a good idea to start your oven at a very low temp for a half hour, then bring it up gradually. And then, when it's done baking, turn off the oven and don't open the oven at all. Let it cool down to room temp on its own, gradually. (And the sculpt will stay warm longer than the oven will) When at home, I just bake my sculpts at the end of the day, so I can turn the oven off and then leave it overnight. *nods*

This is so amazing I doubt I could do anything close to as good as this.
Where did you get the brass tubes from I'd like to try even if it would turn out bad it's always good to try.
Your so amazing if you can make something this good, and without an oven!

ChaosKomori In reply to Kiaraz [2008-07-21 23:51:20 +0000 UTC]

Brass tubes can be found in hobby shops and some craft stores that have a model train/car/airplane section. They're usually near the wooden dowels and aluminum tubes. You'll need a dremel tool to cut them, though, because they're very tough.

I LOVE the process! It makes things seem more...well...more like I could actually DO it if I practiced every day and actually HAD the equipment to do it with. ^__^ LOL!

You're a WONDERFUL sculptor...I just wish that I could do anything even HALF as well as you!!

=3 I bet!! Just LOOK at the results!! You should seriously think about going into the modelling business. You know? Because...hollywood, for their animations 2D and 3D alike, need a good model for their characters. ^__^ You're VERY talented, there. Maybe you could see if a production studio anywhere near you needs someone with your abilities and talents.

^__^ Thanks! Making maquettes for a living would be a pretty fun job. I think I might put that on my list of things to try out in my lifetime, though at the moment I'm aiming for more of an animation job than sculpting.
