You'll find updates on all my other prop work as well. I do not think I will ever make a full tutorial like this again, but I will be keeping detailed photo sets of my process. Currents projects include 3D maneuver gear and Amon's royal sword from Magi.
Also, I will be remaking this staff for Anime Boston 2014 I think, though I'm going to go with a pvc/ heat gun method this time around so I can make it portable. If you'd like to try this method, just form the staff as need be with the heat gun used for the curves, and follow the rest of the steps! Simple as that. Plaster sticks and dries nicely on anything which makes it awesome. <3
EDIT AGAIN 4/17/13: OMG. How is this still this popular? I'm astounded. xD Anyways, making it portable didnt work. Plus, I realized within the last month that I made the hook waaay to big. Really wish i cut the pieces shorter...Anyways. If I remake it in a method I like better, I'll seriously be considering selling this one. So keep your eyes peeled.
EDIT1/28/13: When I go home. I think I'm going to try to find a way to make this portable. I love it as is, but. It's just not good for travel. :/ I have an idea. Just hope it works.
Okay, so this is my first tutorial I've ever made so I apologize if its not very good. 
Just a warning with my version of the staff/shepard's hook though, it does have some weight to it since it is solid wood. (Honestly though, it feels really solid. It's not breaking anytime soon.)It seems that a lot of people have gone with pvc piping for theirs; but I felt like I wasn't going to be able to do what I needed to do with that. :/
Working with wood, plaster strips, and gorilla tape to make the actual structure was just my initial idea, so I went with that; and I am very happy I did. Came out just as I imagined it would, which is just such an awesome feeling.
Only problem is that its about 6ft tall due to my 5'10" height, FFFFF. Travel WILL be difficult. @__@
-PLEASE credit me. That should be pretty straightforward. :/

-And last but not least, please share your finished creations with me! I'd love to see!

How much plaster strips did you need for this project? I'm in the midst of making mine but ended up picking up fiba tape instead of palster tape which is apparently impossible to find.

I believe it was 1.5 inches in diameter? or possibly 1 inch. Basically you just want it to feel comfortable in your grip. the strips will not add much diameter at all.

i love this tutorial! im planning on cosplaying as jack and this is the best staff tutorial yet. i just have one question. for the paint you used, did you use like a brown gloss spray paint or regular paint and like a clear gloss covering?

how heavy were the plaster strips when u applied them. i made my staff out of hollow metal and i was wondering how heavy it would be to do it this way.

The plaster strips definitely add some weight to it when wet. But once dry, the difference in weight is astounding.

Not off the top of my head, no. These are far too long anyways. In all honesty I winged it. What I can say is that you want the main part of the staff to come up to your chin. I actually have a new tutorial (well, step by step) I'll be posting real soon made using the heat gun and pvc method. Keep your eye out for it if you're curious.

I was just wondering, about how much was the total cost for making this. I am in serious need of a staff as i used a walking stick at the convention last year, lol

well, for me like 15 cause I had the strips already. I'd say since strips cost like 5 a roll and you need 2.....you could get by for like 25-30. the shorter dowel rod will cost only a couple bucks and the longer one (down the aisle where the closet poles are) will run you like 8 or 9. I used cheap nothing special paints as regular acrylics stick to plaster wonderfully as it is water based and natural. Oh, and duct tape is like a few, but most people have that stuff lying around anyways.
The alternate (and easier way) would be to get a heat gun, some pvc pipes and shape them into a staff. (This would also allow for portability) and then wrap with plaster and paint. I will actually be remaking mine probably this way so I can make it portable as its nearly impossible to take mine anywhere. I didnt own a heat gun originally which is why i went the wood way.

Thank you! I wish you luck. Keep in mind you can also switch out the wood with pvc if you have a heat gun. This will decrease the weight and allow for portability if you construct it right. Back when I made this, I didnt have a heat gun (heck, i still need to buy one), hence the wood.

I'm still not entirely sure of what you mean but I'll give it my best shot. All in all, I only spent like $15 on this project, but that is only because I got my plaster strips free from school. I used basic cheap 99 cents brown spray paint for a base and the only reason the top part is a different color is because I did not continue my frosty paint job towards the top. I only did this paint job towards the central area. I hope this answers your question.

I'm not making a Jack Frost staff, but rather a staff from Final Fantasy that is made of wood. This is the best tutorial I have found on how to achieve a wood-grain texture. Thank you so much for your insight!

Let's see here......diameter is 1 and 3/4 in. i think? Don't quote me on that. The diameter was that of a closet pole so I only had one choice anyways.
