[[If you'd like to reblog this on Tumblr, you can do so here: lyte-tech.tumblr.com/post/4010… ]] FINAL EDIT 5/9/14: Version 2 now available here! fav.me/d7hqmlg New and improved! made using PVC pipe and duct tape as a base. And it's portable!
---------------------
EDIT 2/19/14: Wow guys, even at this point I still can't believe how popular this tutorial is. I never even imagined haha. Anywho if you like this tutorial and have used it, you can show your support by liking me on Facebook! I'm fairly new there, so I'd appreicate any support I can get. Thanks!
You'll find updates on all my other prop work as well. I do not think I will ever make a full tutorial like this again, but I will be keeping detailed photo sets of my process. Currents projects include 3D maneuver gear and Amon's royal sword from Magi.
Also, I will be remaking this staff for Anime Boston 2014 I think, though I'm going to go with a pvc/ heat gun method this time around so I can make it portable. If you'd like to try this method, just form the staff as need be with the heat gun used for the curves, and follow the rest of the steps! Simple as that. Plaster sticks and dries nicely on anything which makes it awesome. <3
EDIT AGAIN 4/17/13: OMG. How is this still this popular? I'm astounded. xD Anyways, making it portable didnt work. Plus, I realized within the last month that I made the hook waaay to big. Really wish i cut the pieces shorter...Anyways. If I remake it in a method I like better, I'll seriously be considering selling this one. So keep your eyes peeled.
EDIT1/28/13: When I go home. I think I'm going to try to find a way to make this portable. I love it as is, but. It's just not good for travel. :/ I have an idea. Just hope it works.
Okay, so this is my first tutorial I've ever made so I apologize if its not very good. I did my best to explain all my steps in detail and make it look nice. Let me know if words are too small or are spelled wrong or anything.
Just a warning with my version of the staff/shepard's hook though, it does have some weight to it since it is solid wood. (Honestly though, it feels really solid. It's not breaking anytime soon.)It seems that a lot of people have gone with pvc piping for theirs; but I felt like I wasn't going to be able to do what I needed to do with that. :/
Working with wood, plaster strips, and gorilla tape to make the actual structure was just my initial idea, so I went with that; and I am very happy I did. Came out just as I imagined it would, which is just such an awesome feeling.
Only problem is that its about 6ft tall due to my 5'10" height, FFFFF. Travel WILL be difficult. @__@Just some general guidelines for if you use this tutorial:
-PLEASE credit me. That should be pretty straightforward. :/
-Fave the tutorial.
-And last but not least, please share your finished creations with me! I'd love to see!
Well, that's it. I hope this helps people. Happy sawing!

That's totally amaaazing! I can't believe how much it looks like Jack's staff I make weapons but this was so out of my comfort zone and I have been trying to think of how the heck to make this staff for a friend of mine ^___^ I will totally try this. I am so uber happy I came across this. Awesome job!

Haha, no problem! Be sure to check out the version 2 tut if you're looking for an easier method made of pvc. Only requirement is you'll need a heat gun. : ) good luck.

How much plaster strips did you need for this project? I'm in the midst of making mine but ended up picking up fiba tape instead of palster tape which is apparently impossible to find.

What you are looking for is this basically: www.amazon.com/Plaster-Gauze-4…
I needed about two rolls of this stuff to make it all the way. : )

Do you remember what thickness the dowel rod you used was?

Lyte-tech In reply to WaylandsForge [2014-07-21 01:51:59 +0000 UTC]
I believe it was 1.5 inches in diameter? or possibly 1 inch. Basically you just want it to feel comfortable in your grip. the strips will not add much diameter at all.

i love this tutorial! im planning on cosplaying as jack and this is the best staff tutorial yet. i just have one question. for the paint you used, did you use like a brown gloss spray paint or regular paint and like a clear gloss covering?

Lyte-tech In reply to FirestarPyro [2014-06-24 23:20:12 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Be sure to check out V2 for an updated PVC pipe version. I used just a walmart brand cheap as it gets gloss brown paint. I added flat clear coat spray over that once dry to protect it more from water, etc.

how heavy were the plaster strips when u applied them. i made my staff out of hollow metal and i was wondering how heavy it would be to do it this way.

Lyte-tech In reply to Kai-the-dragon-667 [2014-06-15 00:34:31 +0000 UTC]
The plaster strips definitely add some weight to it when wet. But once dry, the difference in weight is astounding. Using metal though, your staff is going to be heavy in general
Honestly I woulndt recommend metal for conventions and such.

Not off the top of my head, no. These are far too long anyways. In all honesty I winged it. What I can say is that you want the main part of the staff to come up to your chin. I actually have a new tutorial (well, step by step) I'll be posting real soon made using the heat gun and pvc method. Keep your eye out for it if you're curious.

I was just wondering, about how much was the total cost for making this. I am in serious need of a staff as i used a walking stick at the convention last year, lol

Lyte-tech In reply to setosora77 [2014-02-16 07:10:18 +0000 UTC]
well, for me like 15 cause I had the strips already. I'd say since strips cost like 5 a roll and you need 2.....you could get by for like 25-30. the shorter dowel rod will cost only a couple bucks and the longer one (down the aisle where the closet poles are) will run you like 8 or 9. I used cheap nothing special paints as regular acrylics stick to plaster wonderfully as it is water based and natural. Oh, and duct tape is like a few, but most people have that stuff lying around anyways.
The alternate (and easier way) would be to get a heat gun, some pvc pipes and shape them into a staff. (This would also allow for portability) and then wrap with plaster and paint. I will actually be remaking mine probably this way so I can make it portable as its nearly impossible to take mine anywhere. I didnt own a heat gun originally which is why i went the wood way.
Good luck.

Thank you! I wish you luck. Keep in mind you can also switch out the wood with pvc if you have a heat gun. This will decrease the weight and allow for portability if you construct it right. Back when I made this, I didnt have a heat gun (heck, i still need to buy one), hence the wood.

I'm sorry? I'm not quite sure what you mean. The colors I used you can see in the pic with all the paints in it. All pretty cheap stuff. Nothing special.

no i'm sorry I wasn't clear when you buy the pole for the staff on the end part of the pole are different colors tell you the size of it and how much it cost

I'm still not entirely sure of what you mean but I'll give it my best shot. All in all, I only spent like $15 on this project, but that is only because I got my plaster strips free from school. I used basic cheap 99 cents brown spray paint for a base and the only reason the top part is a different color is because I did not continue my frosty paint job towards the top. I only did this paint job towards the central area. I hope this answers your question.

Ahhh this is fabulous! My friend and I are planning on doing a RoTG cosplay ourselves in the spring, and of all the idea I've seen out there on how to do the staff, this one is probably one of my favourites. I look forward to building it :3 Thanks for posting this!

Thank you so much! Not a problem. I always love to hear that this is helpful to people. Good luck with everything! Just for a note, wood could be switched out for pvc pipe as well to make it more light weight. You would just need a heat gun to make the bends. I dont own one, hence the wood method. :'D

I'm not making a Jack Frost staff, but rather a staff from Final Fantasy that is made of wood. This is the best tutorial I have found on how to achieve a wood-grain texture. Thank you so much for your insight!

Thanks for the tutorial! Its fantastic! But, can u tell me what is the width of the staff?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lyte-tech In reply to TheKingofNarnia [2013-11-13 04:21:35 +0000 UTC]
Let's see here......diameter is 1 and 3/4 in. i think? Don't quote me on that. The diameter was that of a closet pole so I only had one choice anyways. If you're going with wood, there will most likely only be that size for the 6ft pieces. The hook pieces were a tad smaller so I wouldn't have to cut as much and theyd be lighter.

This tutorial is fantastic!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make it
I took some photos of my staff to do a tutorial of my own.
Is it ok if I make a tutorial based on yours?
I will definitely credit you at the end, and even provide a link to your tutorial.
Also, can I share some photos of my staff with you? (I'm not really sure how to do that though, I'm kinda new to devianart )
Thanks!

Thank you! I enjoyed making it. I'm glad it helped you. If you would like to post your own tutorial then that is fine with me as long as you don't use mine as a base and copy sections of steps from it. Anything in your own words and format is fine. And I would very much appreciate the credit. Thank you.
And I'd love to see some! All you have to do it click submit art to upload photos and then you can share the links with anyone.
