[[If you'd like to reblog this on Tumblr, you can do so here: lyte-tech.tumblr.com/post/4010… ]] FINAL EDIT 5/9/14: Version 2 now available here! fav.me/d7hqmlg New and improved! made using PVC pipe and duct tape as a base. And it's portable!
---------------------
EDIT 2/19/14: Wow guys, even at this point I still can't believe how popular this tutorial is. I never even imagined haha. Anywho if you like this tutorial and have used it, you can show your support by liking me on Facebook! I'm fairly new there, so I'd appreicate any support I can get. Thanks!
You'll find updates on all my other prop work as well. I do not think I will ever make a full tutorial like this again, but I will be keeping detailed photo sets of my process. Currents projects include 3D maneuver gear and Amon's royal sword from Magi.
Also, I will be remaking this staff for Anime Boston 2014 I think, though I'm going to go with a pvc/ heat gun method this time around so I can make it portable. If you'd like to try this method, just form the staff as need be with the heat gun used for the curves, and follow the rest of the steps! Simple as that. Plaster sticks and dries nicely on anything which makes it awesome. <3
EDIT AGAIN 4/17/13: OMG. How is this still this popular? I'm astounded. xD Anyways, making it portable didnt work. Plus, I realized within the last month that I made the hook waaay to big. Really wish i cut the pieces shorter...Anyways. If I remake it in a method I like better, I'll seriously be considering selling this one. So keep your eyes peeled.
EDIT1/28/13: When I go home. I think I'm going to try to find a way to make this portable. I love it as is, but. It's just not good for travel. :/ I have an idea. Just hope it works.
Okay, so this is my first tutorial I've ever made so I apologize if its not very good. I did my best to explain all my steps in detail and make it look nice. Let me know if words are too small or are spelled wrong or anything.
Just a warning with my version of the staff/shepard's hook though, it does have some weight to it since it is solid wood. (Honestly though, it feels really solid. It's not breaking anytime soon.)It seems that a lot of people have gone with pvc piping for theirs; but I felt like I wasn't going to be able to do what I needed to do with that. :/
Working with wood, plaster strips, and gorilla tape to make the actual structure was just my initial idea, so I went with that; and I am very happy I did. Came out just as I imagined it would, which is just such an awesome feeling.
Only problem is that its about 6ft tall due to my 5'10" height, FFFFF. Travel WILL be difficult. @__@Just some general guidelines for if you use this tutorial:
-PLEASE credit me. That should be pretty straightforward. :/
-Fave the tutorial.
-And last but not least, please share your finished creations with me! I'd love to see!
Well, that's it. I hope this helps people. Happy sawing!

No, not at all. That's because the base of it is cloth which is super strong.

Thank you for posting this but I have a question:
Did you use spray paint for the brown or did you paint it manually?

Your welcome~ Cheap 1-2 dollar spray paint from walmart and some clear coat is what I used.

Well, I got lucky and just got some from my art building at uni for free. But I have seen them on amazon and other sites. They are typically around $5 a roll.

I ran into the same problem, but I found some at Blick's Art Materials. You can also order them online if needed.

Thanks for the help!
I have one more question, how many rolls am I going to need for this?

RedRangerJayden In reply to shadowAerisus [2013-06-04 17:16:51 +0000 UTC]
I used two rolls, and had pretty much the perfect amount. But it also depends on how tall you are, since that will determine how tall your staff is. I'm 5'4" (yes I'm short xD), and two rolls was perfect, if not more than enough. Hope that helps! :3

Hi there. Sorry for such a late reply and thank you for the watch. I just used normal wood screws. They prevent the wood from splitting as easily.

Hi there! Thank you very muvh, and so sorry for such a late reply. Umm, well it all really depends. I've never done prop commissions before but I suppose I might be able to. I just can't imagine how much shipping costs would be for it though. So heavy and awkward shaped. xo If you're still interested, send me a note and we can discuss details further.

I can't wait to try to build this! Do you think that you could give me the proportions for the parts? I know that the shaft should come up to the neck, but how long should each of the pieces be in proportion to that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lyte-tech In reply to Crexor [2013-05-08 05:34:23 +0000 UTC]
Ummm, all i can really say is shorter than how I made them. I didn't realize until later that I made the hook waaaay to big. Eye-ball it and see what looks okay. I don't exactly have the staff with me right now so I can't make any measurements. Sorry!

Did you cut pieces off the 6 ft. wooden dowel rod to form the "G" shape?
Or did you use other smaller wooden dowel rods?

Lyte-tech In reply to Tristan-kun [2013-04-30 02:52:12 +0000 UTC]
I bought a 3 ft rod with a slightly smaller diameter and cut that up.

This is amazing! I'm going as Jack to Comic-Con this summer, and my only problem is his staff; I have no idea how to break it down to fit it into a carry-on bag for a plane! Do you think if I did just the entire thing like you and then cut it into foot-long sections with a table saw, and then super-glued it back together once I got there, would that work? I can't think of any way to make it portable, gah!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lyte-tech In reply to CirqueDuBonheur [2013-04-22 03:03:35 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. I wouldn't go with super glue. My orginal idea included double ended screws but I gave up on that after realizing it was going to be more trouble than it was worth. :/ My new idea for if I make this again would to substitute wood for piping. Though another idea could be to use cardboard tubes. Someone on tumblr who was using my tutorial showed me what they called just a practice one made out of cardboard, but I thought it was a great idea! With a little reinforcement, including spray foam for the inside, it'd be perfect and super light too!
Anyways hope that helps!~

CirqueDuBonheur In reply to Lyte-tech [2013-04-23 02:12:48 +0000 UTC]
Hm...I assume you mean like PVC, right? I just don't know how well cardboard would hold up, especially since it's going to have to be on duty for four days. Oh well ha. This did help a ton! Let me know if you have an idea though.
Thanks!

Lyte-tech In reply to CirqueDuBonheur [2013-04-26 04:06:57 +0000 UTC]
Haha, yeah. PVC. And hey, you'd be surprised at how well a paper-based product can be. Ever coat cardstock in resin? Or cardboard with gloss? Heck if you glossed cardboard then coated it with plaster and cloth you've got yourself something pretty strong. I mean, just look at fiberglass.
Anyways, glad to be of some help at least. Good luck.

EPIC!!! Thanks sooo much for this tutorial! You explained everything very well and the pictures(and illustrations) were extremely helpful. I was planning on making staffs for my friend and I because, well...we're Jack Frost fanatics My plan didn't work (heating wood and bending it) yours looks like it will work perfectly o.O I'll be sure to tell EVERYONE where I got the tutorial from! Thanks again!
Oh, yes I do have one question. What colors did you use for the accent paint. As in the light blue. your color is perfect and I didn't want to get the wrong color. Thanks again!

Eek, heating wood? 8o I can't imagine that went too well. ^^' But hey, thank a lot! Glad you find it so helpful.
Er...let's see here. My paints are at home so..../superzoomspicontutorial. Hmm, well, I can't exactly remember the brand, but its just cheap 99 cents acrylic craft paint (with the apple on the label) from a craft store. I used a combination of the 3 colors you see. So pretty much a sky blue, a turqiosy blue i guess and white. Like i said in the tutorial though. I'm pretty sporadic when painting. I pretty much work from a few different colored blobs of paint and go nuts~
If you want, I can give the exact colors and brand in a couple weeks once uni is over.

How tall do you think the staff should be made for someone 5"2--5"3?? I haven't made any props for my cosplays,, due to not knowing how,, but I really want to try this..

Lyte-tech In reply to ChloeMoko [2013-04-17 05:17:26 +0000 UTC]
Just measure the main part of the staff up to your neck and then make the curve fit for just above your height. That should work. And hey, you should go for it then! It's a lot of fun to do and it really gives you a good sense of accomplishment afterwards.~ Good luck!
