Description
[[If you'd like to reblog this on Tumblr, you can do so here: lyte-tech.tumblr.com/post/4010… ]] FINAL EDIT 5/9/14: Version 2 now available here! fav.me/d7hqmlg New and improved! made using PVC pipe and duct tape as a base. And it's portable!
---------------------
EDIT 2/19/14: Wow guys, even at this point I still can't believe how popular this tutorial is. I never even imagined haha. Anywho if you like this tutorial and have used it, you can show your support by liking me on Facebook! I'm fairly new there, so I'd appreicate any support I can get. Thanks!
You'll find updates on all my other prop work as well. I do not think I will ever make a full tutorial like this again, but I will be keeping detailed photo sets of my process. Currents projects include 3D maneuver gear and Amon's royal sword from Magi.
Also, I will be remaking this staff for Anime Boston 2014 I think, though I'm going to go with a pvc/ heat gun method this time around so I can make it portable. If you'd like to try this method, just form the staff as need be with the heat gun used for the curves, and follow the rest of the steps! Simple as that. Plaster sticks and dries nicely on anything which makes it awesome. <3
EDIT AGAIN 4/17/13: OMG. How is this still this popular? I'm astounded. xD Anyways, making it portable didnt work. Plus, I realized within the last month that I made the hook waaay to big. Really wish i cut the pieces shorter...Anyways. If I remake it in a method I like better, I'll seriously be considering selling this one. So keep your eyes peeled.
EDIT1/28/13: When I go home. I think I'm going to try to find a way to make this portable. I love it as is, but. It's just not good for travel. :/ I have an idea. Just hope it works.
Okay, so this is my first tutorial I've ever made so I apologize if its not very good. I did my best to explain all my steps in detail and make it look nice. Let me know if words are too small or are spelled wrong or anything.
Just a warning with my version of the staff/shepard's hook though, it does have some weight to it since it is solid wood. (Honestly though, it feels really solid. It's not breaking anytime soon.)It seems that a lot of people have gone with pvc piping for theirs; but I felt like I wasn't going to be able to do what I needed to do with that. :/
Working with wood, plaster strips, and gorilla tape to make the actual structure was just my initial idea, so I went with that; and I am very happy I did. Came out just as I imagined it would, which is just such an awesome feeling.
Only problem is that its about 6ft tall due to my 5'10" height, FFFFF. Travel WILL be difficult. @__@Just some general guidelines for if you use this tutorial:
-PLEASE credit me. That should be pretty straightforward. :/
-Fave the tutorial.
-And last but not least, please share your finished creations with me! I'd love to see!
Well, that's it. I hope this helps people. Happy sawing!

I didn't really have a choice for diameter since the main one was a closet pole. Pretty sure it was 1 and 3/8 in. About 3.5 cm. The one used for the crook was a tad smaller.

ah thanks. that will be easier now to find the size while shopping. i never worked with all these things before but i am going to try my best on it. and just a normal handsaw will work right?

No prob. And yeah, with some elbow greece and a good clamp it will. ^^ If you can get your hands on something better like a circular saw then it makes things go a lot quicker. Good luck.

What do you mean? The bumps on the crook and staff? Those are just duct tape lumps wrapped around the wood before adding the plaster.

Have you ever worked with wood before? Well the screws are going in on an angle into the wood so the parts can connect. Make sure to use a bit of wood glue for a stronger hold and use wood screws. You're probably going to want an extra pair of hands to help as well. I had my father drill the screws in while I held the pieces together. Much less of a hassle.

um... how long was the wood you used to make the hook? I'm about 5'3" and I would like to know so i don't buy too much or too little wood.. and the approximate mesurements of each segmant of wood so i can do that as well. (sorry if i'm asking too much.. thank you so much if you reply!)

It's alright. I'll help the best I can. ^^ The main part of the staff should measure up to around your neck height. You'd definitely not want to use the exact measurements of mine, haha. (Mine would be towering on you. ) For the crook part, you are just going to have to eyeball it. That's all I can rly say sadly. Since if you used the measurements I have (which I pretty much eyeballed in the first place) it would look far to large for the overall staff. ^^' As long as you eyeball well enough the angles will work for you.
Hope that helps.

This is amazing! I am curious on how long were the pieces of the crook. Is there a certain length that each piece of the crook should be? Like how long would point 1 be to point 2? (sorry if this is not explained well >.<)

Thank you very much! I'm sorry. I actually do not have exact measurements for those. ^^' In the end, I ended up putting together pieces I hadnt even planned to put together, so I forgot to take measurements. When I go home in a few days though, I'll be sure to add them to the description here, since a lot of people have been asking. I'm at school right now, so my staff is a long ways away right now, haha.

You're welcome! Also its ok, thank you so much for making this though. Don't rush your self about it. Also how did you find such a long Dowel staff? I have tried almost everywhere including the hardware stores and I cant seem to find a long one for me. They all seem to short. D: Anyway thanks so much again!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lyte-tech In reply to BewitchedCosplay [2013-03-13 22:27:47 +0000 UTC]
Ah, yeah. I had the problem too. The long one is in fact meant to be in a closet for hanging clothes, haha. I got mine from Lowes for about 4 or 6 bucks. (So happy my dad spotted it for me. I just knew there had to be one there!) It was where all the tall pieces of wood were down the aisle from the shorter dowels.
Personally though, I wish I had used shorter ones and connected them using double-ended screws and coupling nuts which is what im going to try when i go home. But if you dont mind the insanely tall staff, then go for it~

BewitchedCosplay In reply to Lyte-tech [2013-03-14 05:24:32 +0000 UTC]
I looked at Lowes, but thank you for confirming it. I just looked at the short ones. Also i was just thinking about connecting the two shorts ones if I couldn't find any of the long ones. I am actually 5'6" so the staff wouldn't be that tall.

Lyte-tech In reply to BewitchedCosplay [2013-03-14 14:56:50 +0000 UTC]
Still tall enough to be troublesome though; you'd be surprised, haha. Well, I wish you the best of luck then.

Hi! This tutorial is very interesting. I am actually doing a staff too, but it's the staff of Oogway from Kung Fu panda, and I was asking myself what I should do for the more realistic effect for the peach tree staff, and those plaster strips are brilliant. But with what kind of paint were you able to get to the brown colour effect? How did you get to this result before adding the frost? Was is normal paint, spray?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lyte-tech In reply to Red-Matter [2013-03-07 00:58:35 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much for the compliment! Yes, just regular spray paint is what I used. Because of the way the strips take the paint, it takes a few coats to achieve the desired color. The first couple will be more pale then later coats. (You can see that here with the way some parts are more darker and glossier than others.) For your project, I recommend a matte finish though. I actually messed up buying the gloss finish for mine but it ended up working out and looking icy, haha. Glad this tutorial could be of some help to you!

Of course, I will take a picture of it and do a montage to post here 8)
Well it is a Jack Frost Staff tutorial, so you can keep it like this, but I had a looot of trouble finding a good tutorial how to do a wooden texture...until the idea of searching for Jack' Staff hit me hard in the face XD

Excellent! Can't wait to see. 8D
Hm, maybe I'll just add that to the tag then. That'll work. ^o^ And that's pretty surprising actually. I mean, as soon as I got my hands on those plaster strips in class I immediately had the idea to make the texture using them. Maybe its just cause they are a little harder to come by. ^^'

I'm so sorry, I know it's been years since you asked me to post some pictures of my staff. Th problem is, I have taken the picture, but my photoshop decided to not work anymore. So I have nothing to do a montage. I was thinking on putting them on Tumblr instead (since I can put a lot more picture in only one post).
But seriously, the staff is almost like wood...except for the fragile part where it's hard but could break if it's hit.

She wanted to do Jack Frost but we didn't know how to make the staff and I searched on the net for a tutorial ... I found yours. I'm so glad I find it, because it was really helpful.
We somehow made it ... It's not as nice as yours but we are proud of ours.
