Description [[If you'd like to reblog this on Tumblr, you can do so here: lyte-tech.tumblr.com/post/4010… ]]

FINAL EDIT 5/9/14:  Version 2 now available here! fav.me/d7hqmlg  New and improved! made using PVC pipe and duct tape as a base. And it's portable!

---------------------

EDIT 2/19/14:  Wow guys, even at this point I still can't believe how popular this tutorial is. I never even imagined haha. Anywho if you like this tutorial and have used it, you can show your support by liking me on Facebook! I'm fairly new there, so I'd appreicate any support I can get. Thanks!

You'll find updates on all my other prop work as well. I do not think I will ever make a full tutorial like this again, but I will be keeping detailed photo sets of my process. Currents projects include 3D maneuver gear and Amon's royal sword from Magi.

Also, I will be remaking this staff for Anime Boston 2014 I think, though I'm going to go with a pvc/ heat gun method this time around so I can make it portable. If you'd like to try this method, just form the staff as need be with the heat gun used for the curves, and follow the rest of the steps!  Simple as that. Plaster sticks and dries nicely on anything which makes it awesome. <3

EDIT AGAIN 4/17/13: OMG. How is this still this popular? I'm astounded. xD Anyways, making it portable didnt work. Plus, I realized within the last month that I made the hook waaay to big. Really wish i cut the pieces shorter...Anyways. If I remake it in a method I like better, I'll seriously be considering selling this one. So keep your eyes peeled.

EDIT1/28/13: When I go home. I think I'm going to try to find a way to make this portable. I love it as is, but. It's just not good for travel. :/ I have an idea. Just hope it works.

Okay, so this is my first tutorial I've ever made so I apologize if its not very good. I did my best to explain all my steps in detail and make it look nice. Let me know if words are too small or are spelled wrong or anything.

Just a warning with my version of the staff/shepard's hook though, it does have some weight to it since it is solid wood. (Honestly though, it feels really solid. It's not breaking anytime soon.)It seems that a lot of people have gone with pvc piping for theirs; but I felt like I wasn't going to be able to do what I needed to do with that. :/

Working with wood, plaster strips, and gorilla tape to make the actual structure was just my initial idea, so I went with that; and I am very happy I did. Came out just as I imagined it would, which is just such an awesome feeling.

Only problem is that its about 6ft tall due to my 5'10" height, FFFFF. Travel WILL be difficult. @__@

Just some general guidelines for if you use this tutorial:

-PLEASE credit me. That should be pretty straightforward. :/
-Fave the tutorial.
-And last but not least, please share your finished creations with me! I'd love to see!

Well, that's it. I hope this helps people. Happy sawing!

Oh my God this is awesome this'll really help, I'm also sort of having a problem with travelling (I have to go on a plane!), do you know any way to make it collapsible? it seems all us cosplayers suffer this problem

Lyte-tech In reply to Itsuki-Ming [2013-01-24 05:11:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. Not unless you cut it in half. Thinking about it though if you did that, if you were able to secure a large bolt to one half and drill a hole in the other end, you may be able to put it together and take it apart into sections. But I haven't tried something like that before, so I'm not sure how well that might work.

Other option is make the base pvc pipe. :/

I'm currently debating on if a train will let me take it with me or not. I think you'd have better luck with the plane, haha. Wrap it up and put it in cargo I guess.

Thank you so much for the advice, I'm liking the bolt idea I think it might be for the best, but maybe I'll do cargo, ugh what we cosplayers go through! what convention are planning ongoing to with Jack? :3

Your welcome. ^^ I'll probably do a little experimenting with that when I go home in the spring. Luckily i have left over dowels. If it works out, i might apply it to the staff. And I plan on going to Boston Comic-con for sure. And though PortCon Maine and Connecticon were part of my plans too, I don't think I'll make it to those this year. ^^' Only going to comic-con cause I cant swing Anime Boston this year due to a trip.

I think this is the best way to make jack frost's staff ! I've looked a lot of tutorial and people usually use papier mache. I don't really like the resulat (too smooth, not textured enough), cotton strips that's a great idea !
I was just wondering how many layer do you put on your cross ? And wich lenght of strips did you need ? (I'm pretty tall and pretty poor so I need to estimate as right as possible).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyte-tech In reply to Capuline [2013-01-23 18:25:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! ;3; Yeah, plaster strips are great. You can use them for so many different kinds of projects. <3
Well you're going to want a couple rolls of the stuff that is like in the picture. I'm not sure how long mine were actually, but the roll length is pretty standard i think. Oh, and I just said cut into strips because you need to soak the stuff in warm water first, and it'd be pretty hard to do that while its still on the roll, haha. One layer does the job just fine. As you wrap it, just make sure your're not wrapping it so its smooth. Leave that wrapped look texture there.

Don't worry I will probably cut strips in old clothes and make plaster aside. It won't be as easy tu use I guess but it's better than nothing ^^

I use an old bed sheet and cut it into strips. Then I put them into plater and wrap my staff... And now it's super heavy x)
But that's a nice result, I'm glad of it Thanks again for yout tutorial ^^

Aunty-Rennykins In reply to ??? [2013-01-21 00:27:42 +0000 UTC]

I plan on making this myself, but I have a couple of questions:

What should the diameter of the dowel rod be?
How long are the units to make the "bend" in the sheppard's staff?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyte-tech In reply to Aunty-Rennykins [2013-01-21 07:49:13 +0000 UTC]

It's diameter should just be whatever is comfortable for your own hand. Typically, really long dowel rods like these tend to be around the 1 and 3/4" diameter range anyways. Like, the one I got was supposed to be for a closet, haha I think the one I used for the hook part was 1 and 1/2" in.? Maybe? Was trying to cut down on weight just a tad.

Ooh, I'm sorry. I actually do not have exact measurements off the top of my head. I kind of just kept adjusting as need be. :/ It was kind of a hit and miss kind of thing. Unfortunately I'm at school right now and the staff is far away at home so I cant measure them. I should add that to the tutorial once I can get the measurements. Thanks for bringing that up. I'm sry I couldn't be of more help.
If it helps, try eyeballing it from the full length pics.

Thank you for taking the time to reply! You and I are actually the same height (5'10"), so Judging by the picture, I should be able to make an estimate.

Thank you again!

Your tutorial was a big help when it came to making my staff! Just wanted to ask where did you buy the plaster strips at?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyte-tech In reply to EhnviousVhanity [2013-01-19 23:29:12 +0000 UTC]

That's so great to here! Well the strips to be honest I just got from school since we were done using them for a project. But you can easily find them on sites like Amazon. They're not the cheapest (roughly around 5 a roll) But I'm sure you could find cheaper stuff if you search.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EhnviousVhanity In reply to Lyte-tech [2013-01-20 23:37:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah ok. ^^ Well...I kinda went doofus mode and got plaster of paris and a couple of bandages to try and do it. o.O Hopefully I will get the same results as you did!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyte-tech In reply to EhnviousVhanity [2013-01-21 00:18:55 +0000 UTC]

Well it should give you the same result I suppose. Same materials pretty much. With the plaster strips its kinda just done for you all in one step. Soak and go. I wish you luck! It looks good so far. I'm not sure how strong the hook will hold up just being glued together, but if it feels okay then i guess it should be fine. Screws + glue just hold things together a bit more. ^^'

Thank you~ I'm glad you like it. Oh, I was just saying that you'll need a bowl of warm water to put the plaster strips in. Plaster strips have to be cut and soaked in water to work. ^^ I just didnt take a pic of that step cause I forgot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kashiyuka1223 In reply to Lyte-tech [2013-01-16 22:22:31 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyte-tech In reply to Kashiyuka1223 [2013-01-16 23:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Just however long you want. You are just wrapping the wood and tape with the stuff for like the entire 5ish ft. Long or short strips. Just whatever you can handle really. You'll want a few packages though. I barely made it by with the 1 and a half packages I had.
