very cool, you've really been improving nicely and quickly. the compositions and tones are very nice, though i recommend making the contrast higher and a bit more consistent.

Thanks - I love getting critique - not enough people do it! Can you tell me which parts you think are inconsistent so I can work on them specifically?

It's actually the girl, and more importantly, her clothing and umbrella. Next to the contrasty sea, her dress has the impression of being a little flat or lacking texture (gosh, i hope none of this is coming off as negative, i really think it's a great piece), i would suggest using curves or levels as an adjustment layer and masking it until only the dress/umbrella (and maybe a bit of the tree, although it does just look like it is in fog) match the rest of the scene. just remember that it's not a huge difference, so if you decide to experiment, be careful to not go overboard. :)

No not at all - I appreciate it I thought maybe it was the girl - but then I started looking at the tree/window area and thought maybe they were too soft - I'll have to squeeze in some time to play with the adj layers and see what I can come up with.
PS - Never feel funny about leaving me critique - you know I value your opinions!

This is an incredible piece. I love the deep blue tones and the limited lighting. Very well developed and presented. It seems to have a slight resemblance of something from a Tim Burton movie. Very cool piece

Oh wow, I didn't even realize the resemblance to Tim Burton, but after reading your comment I can totally see that! I should have curled the house over a bit more lol! Thank you so much for the compliment
PS - I just checked out your gallery - amazing talent you have!

It's one of those multi-level sort of things. I think it is actually a great manip just on its own, but if you know about all the choices I made in the stock used it kind of adds something special to it too, at least in my opinion

even though I don't totally understand the joke behind this, its awesome

Hmm - I've been avoiding explaining it because I want people to form their own interpretations. I made it so that you could enjoy it and it has meaning even if you don't know the "joke" part behind it. Maybe I'll edit the description and add a little info on it, we'll see!

There's something wrong with the picture.... Wait! I know! You haven't put a crow in it!!! What a mistake!

chasing-butterflies In reply to UndomielArwen [2007-05-18 17:40:47 +0000 UTC]
LOL - you're suppose to pretend the birds in the sky are crows! I thought about putting a crow on the window - or maybe a butterfly, but things were just getting out of hand and I thought I better quit while I was ahead.

Not on the window, that is so uncool. The spooky branches would do the trick or even better it should fly off of her hand as if to bring some news... Ok I'll stop it here. These things are so darn addictive. One thing leads to another and it makes it so hard to know when to stop.

chasing-butterflies In reply to UndomielArwen [2007-05-20 12:02:46 +0000 UTC]
LOL - the branches may have worked but not the hand because that would have messed up the composition as well as the fact that she is reaching out, well, I want to leave that part open to interpretation - I actually did put a lot of thought into the placement and what she was doing and such. I just don't think my messages are always obvious

Me too! It started out as a quicky in response to ~FaerieNymph 's journal, but after I started it I actually fell in love with it and polished it up. I'm even thinking about doing this as a print!
