I’ve been getting back into Pokémon mystery dungeon lately(and Pokémon in general)picking up on a fanfic I haven’t worked on in months and making lots more fanart of the series, so I decided to play another one of the 3ds games. Super mystery dungeon! And I gotta say, although I prefer gates to infinity. This is still an outstanding game.

I drew a waterfall background as sort of a reference to my post for gates to infinity. Just instead of an Oshawott, I have a froakie here! As that’s what I played as in each respective game. I almost ALWAYS choose water Pokémon in terms of starters. They are easily my favourite. I don’t like Froakie as much in terms of gameplay. But his design is amazing. I loved drawing this. Even if I went a bit off model, but that was just to make this kind of a sona, I guess. (Which is why I’m wearing a plaid scarf)

I highly recommend you play super mystery dungeon. It has tons of callbacks to the earlier games (so longtime fans will squee at some of the smaller details in these games) and the story is intense and amazing. Although.. in my opinion, I felt less invested in this game compared to gates to infinity. In that game I felt like I mattered to this world and the characters here really cared about me. It gave me a sense of home. And despite the story not being all too good I still loved the characters. Super mystery dungeon is very much the opposite. The story is amazing and got me playing more to see what happens next. But a lot of the characters felt flat and rushed. Likely because this game has SO MANY characters! And I’m not just talking about the one-off bosses, or village NPC’s that don’t do anything. I’m talking about characters who appear in the story and have a role. Seriously. There are far too many characters introduced that don’t really do anything throughout the entire story. Just to say something quicky and that’s it. In the village you start off in it’s so nice, almost feeling like a Saturday morning cartoon with you and some kids from your local school getting into wild situations. That was fun for the beginning parts of the game. But basically half the game is taken up by that. You spend almost the entire time in ACT 1. With the big problem only hinted at. Eventually you join the expedition society and go to a new village. Where they introduce my main flaws with the game. They just remove all the characters you knew up until this point and completely removes them from the story. Adding new ones that are each more forgettable than the last. And than nothing actually happens in the story, you are just doing expedition after expedition and you have no drive to keep going because there’s nothing actually happening in the story! It was genuinely so hard to motivate myself to keep playing the game after awhile. It was so tedious to get through. But than… seemingly out of nowhere the story RAMPS UP and now you are in the climax! Eh-sorry? Like this was very intense but also whiplash. You are given major twist and now the world is in great peril OUT OF NOWHERE. This was the highlight of the game. But it took so much meaningless gameplay to get here. I can’t get into the game at this point without spoilers. But just know this. The end of the game is amazing and makes everything you did worth it.

Overall, the music is fantastic. The gameplay is the best in the series (which btw the gameplay still isn’t that fun) and the story had its ups and downs. Wish it had more emotional moments, I need something to cry about. But the endgame was very intense, amazing game overall.

I don’t have much to say in terms of the art here. Besides the fact that I’m probably going to stop using pixel art for the backgrounds. They were another great thing my art had that slowly became a limitation as I went on.
