Description ...mustn't talk.

The animated feature film "Pocahontas" is (c) Walt Disney Pictures / Buena Vista Productions. Please feel free to correct me if something is wrong or missing.

My Disney Drabble no 10: Pocahontas.

Shortly before Disney's Pocahontas came into the theatres here, German TV showed the Making Of. I remember how someone from the film crew (Sorry I forgot who exactly - anyone ideas?) said they decided against talking animals in this movie, so the animals would appear more realistic. Somehow this statement was one of the Making of scenes that sticked with me - and it led eventually to this little parody.

Imho Pocahontas is not so popular in the Disney fancommunity. I agree with some of the criticsm, especially when it comes to the massive changes Disney did with the real, historical persons. That they weren't the first ones who interpreted Pocahontas and John Smith as a couple doesn't make it better.
But still ... if I can turn *two* blind eyes to the usage of the historical facts (sigh!) I can appreciate Pocahontas in its Disney way. The graphics, the story and the characters. It is said that the more realistic design and the more serious approach to the story was one of the factors that started to stop the super duper woah success of Disney's animated features. Really? But even if this is the truth, in Pocahontas' case the stronger realism (a *bit* stronger, we have talking trees and huge musical numbers and sidekicks of course and...) feels good to me.

Oh, and while others prefer Naveem or Aladdin or - ... personally I think John Smith is so far Disney's most attractive male hero. Yum!

I'm sure that if the trees and the nature can talk can do it even the animals X3

While I did like that the animals didn't talk, I find it funny that they talk about realism when one of the characters is literally a talking tree.

I still maintain the idea that not having the animals talk dilutes the theme of communication in this movie. Β Perhaps Flint could be talkative while Meeko could talk, but he would be the type of personality who would not talk much because he likes his actions to speak louder than his words.Β

Understandable viewpoint!

Personally I don't mind Disney's decision, but I think the film wouldn't have suffered either if they had been allowed to talk with the humans.

Omg, Pocahontas is my favorite Disney movie. <3 I really love the more serious approach it has, even though it's not faithful to the historical facts. If it did stick to reality then it wouldn't be Disney anymore. xD It's really better that the animals there don't talk, Flit wouldn't stop giving lectures to Pocahontas.
It's such a beautiful movie and sadly it really is underappreciated. John Smith is definitely the most attractive Disney hero, and he's also so gentle and understanding... I'd choose him without a second thought. <3 The second movie is so crappy I pretend it doesn't exist.
And just now I realized how Smith and Der Tod are similar to each other on the visual aspect. xD

Aaah, another Pocahontas-supporter!

... So far I haven't really seen the second movie, but I already read in a rather convincing sounding review that it's supposed to be pretty bad. (here: [link] ) But I guess if I should ever have the time and it's conveniently on TV I would watch it, even though I'm pretty sure it will make me feel grumpy.

Oh my God, you're like my twin or something! I know Pocahontas isn't accurate to history, but it's still good! There are SOOOO many historically incorrect movies that it became it's own genre! Pocahontas is one of my favorite Disney movies ever, it's the first one I ever watched, so I can't ever NOT like it. We don't watch Disney for faithful adaptations, we watch it for the fun and the music and the crisp animation, and Pocahontas has all of that! Also, yeah, John Smith is one of the hottest Disney dudes, I love Naveen because he's funny and more developed as a character, but John Smith was my first movie crush...that's something special.

As for the comic, OH MY GOD THAT WOULD SO HAPPEN! Flit was a jerk, and he would so tell on her, and Meeko DID seem to be the one to panic when he wasn't fooling around. I don't think I'd mind Percy talking...he seems like he'd have this funny British accent and always get picked on. Oh wait, we don't need two Higgins!

Awww, Thank you for your kind comment!
Right, you reminded me that there *is* this genre called "alternative reality". So far I thought only stories with "big" historical changes belong there (what if WW2 ended differently, what if we would still use steam enignes...) but I guess movies like Pocahontas qualify as well.

I like Flit, his tininess and his eager, sometimes aggressive character are an interesting contrast.
And I totally did not think about Percy while I drew this! Well, he wouldn't fit into the picture anyway, but it's really kinda strange that I never thought for a second "Hey, the dog would talk as well." Thank you for mentioning him!
