This is going to be a loooong comment again ...
I think "The Fox and the Hound" has quite a lot if strong, strong moments and is all together imho one of the the rather underrated Disneys. Why isn't it more popular? My guess is there should have been some more of the moments with deep atmosphere and / or emotionality - a hint more of what "Bambi" or "Lion King" shaped. For a while I thought Tod and Copper's Comic relief characters are also especially annoying, but after watching the movie a few days ago again, I changed my opinion ... they are not thaaat bad, and also they do not appear too often.
But Fox & Hound has also more than one of those certain frustraaaaation moments for the audience, maybe this also made the movie only one of those "second-best" Disneys? P.e., why is the movie Disney enough to let the wise fat owl Big Mama save Tod and help him through life with several pieces of advice, but not Disney enough to help Copper in a similar way? Big Mama could have swept to him and talk with him about the whole hunting dog versus friendship issue as well! Especially because at the beginning she was so touched by this friendship! Yes, if it weren't for the conflict the movie would not exist, but it is frustrating nevertheless!
Or here at the end - Tod could return! Or he could visit the widow at least sometimes! But nooo, the ending seems to say that he stays for 100% in the forrest. Boooh. After watching the film again I've got the suspicion that Vixie is already pregnant, and this is one of the main reasons. Well, and that Vixie herself is one of the (the?) main reason.
Also - does the film's ending hint to a possible late romance between Tweed and Slade? I thought that would be rather cute, but a simple friendship would be fine as well.
Perhaps the movie was also not that successfull because the songs aren't that catchy? Though "Goodbye may seem forever" can make me cry in its sadness.
There are some funny stories connected to Germany's decision to change some of the character's names for the German dub. Germany wasn't the only country, in Demark Tod and Copper are "Mads and Mikkel", in Spain "Tod and Toby"...
but the comment is already so long, and who's interested in German dubbing anecdotes? Ask me if you really are.
Oh, buuut I dare to mention Boomer says the sh-word in the German dub! RAAAAAAAAAAAAH! SWEARING IN A DISNEY MOVIE! How could they? XD Yeah right, changing Vixie into "Trixie" because "Vixie" sounds in German dangerously close to a slang word for ... something unspeakable a man can do with himself ... HAS to happen (see, that's part of one of the anecdotes), but teaching the kiddies explicit bad words? No prob!
I remember how someone in the Net wrote, you can describe all Disneys movies from circa W. Disney's death to "The little mermaid" as the movies of the melancholic and bittersweet time period of Disney. Hmmmm, personally I see only The Fox and the Hound as *really* bittersweet. Totally own opinion, of course.

Here's the truth: The fox and the hound is based on the novel version of the fox and the hound
write by Daniel Mannix and what's really sad is......there's no happy endings for this story.
1. Todd kills Copper by louring him into the train track and Copper got hit by the train and died
2. Todd was raised by a human but spoiler alert, it was the old lady farmer who murdered Todd's family
3. The worst is.......The hunter kills Chief to go to a nursing home.....

Since Walt Disney's death it seems to me that a lot of the Disney shows have taken on new meaning. The Fox and Hound appears to be a movie that goes against hunting, but that's my opinion.Β Anyway this is one of my favorites because Amos learns the hard way.

Amos acted rather childish at the end when Widow Tweed was helping with his injured foot. Even though that part wasn't meant to be comical, I found it sort of a "try not to laugh" part. Widow Tweed wasn't successful at trying not to laugh. I guess Amos gave up hunting after that traumatic encounter with the bear. Things that Amos should have learned: to not be hostile toward a cute fox and not take advantage of hunting animals (especially BIG ones). He got in a LOT of trouble when the bear got him.

Hmm, I do think it was meant in a comical way! Not a laughing-out-loud way, but comical nevertheless.
Personally I presuuume the ending hints that Tweed and Slade become closer - as friends or sorta as an old couple. Amos' hunting ... I don't quite know, maybe he gave it up, maybe he continues to hunt in a "normal",Β kinda socially acceptable way.

My main problem with the movie was Vixie. The second she appeared in the film I knew that she would ruin the movie, that because of her Tod wouldn't be able to come back and he would have to live in the woods. Not only that but her character sucked, she had no personality whatsoever, she was one of the sterotypical female characters thrown into a movie just so the main character could have a girlfriend. There was no need for her, Copper still could have went after Tod and forgiven him after they saved each others lives, then instead of living in the woods he could have went home and become Copper's best friend again. Sorry if you like Vixie, but I don't.

You see why Copper's a scapegoat? Gets love as a puppy but when he's an adult it just goes out the window. Even the animators or the director for the sequel didn't want them as adults.

Now Copper's seen as a villain. One user, and I'm sure you know who it is, went as far to call Copper, and I quote, "a violent demon dog"

I know that the film is dark and it could have been rated PG making it the first disney film to get that rating. But the novel is much darker than the film.

Yeah, I've heard that, too (haven't read it yet!). Not the first and not the last Disney adaption which "lightened" the literal original.

Oh my, you read my long geeky picture comment! I'm so touched. 
1) Moooost of the time the character's names in the German dubs of the Disney movies stay like they are, or become only translated from English to German. However, there are some exceptions, and Tod and Copper are perhaaaps the most prominent one. Those two became "Cap and Capper" in Germany. Why? I still don't know anything official, but I guess what started the whole thing was that "Tod" is the German word for "Death" (pronounciation is a little different, though). So they prefered to turn it into ... Cap. No real name, means nothing in German. Copper was also not allowed to stay Copper, even though almost all other movie characters kept their unmistakably English names, Copper became Capper. Again no real German name, means absolutely nothing in German. It's like naming those two "Urx and Wurx". Maybe after deciding to change Tod's name they wanted to give the same treatment to Copper, and then thought "Capper" just sounds so nicely close to Copper ... and then for the nice unison Tod became Cap. As mentioned, weird, because the names, the words have not the slightest base in the German language. Urx and Wurx. Why not at least something like "Max and Mick" or...?
2) The German dub was done and almost on the way to the cinemas when some officials decided in the last minute to change the name of Vixie. Into "Trixie". Why? Most likely because they started to fear naughty jokes, "Vixie" sounds more than a little like a well-known German slang term for ... masturbation. Especially when done by men. Ahem. Sooo ... those guys from the German voice cast who said the name "Vixie" in the dub had to come into the studio again and repeat their lines, now slightly changed.
The funny thing: wherever the original "naughty" dub and then the second version is stored ... the first version still "got out" into the public not only once but at least twice. I certainly heard a tape recording of the movie as a child where Vixie was still called Vixie. And then when the movie was released on a German DVD in 2001 - there was Vixie instead of Trixie again. The VHS version of 1995 and a later DVD edition should be featuring the "clean" dub.
The rumor goes that there a few other little differences between the first and the second dub, but so far even my inner Disney geek was too lazy to compare more it closely. There's a German website especially dedicated to German dubs of animated movies, its owner might write about it one day.
