< < < < Previous | Next >We've had our fun with the filler to distract the audience from the actual plot bing produced, but now we're back to finally address this angst point!
Hurt so often turned to rage.
Like a wild animal fighting to survive, it lashed out with everything it had.
Still, hotness burned at his eyes with unwavering frustration and blind confusion. It wasn’t all rage. But such emotions fuelled it.
Holding the whimpering coward in his claws, the pathetic shaking and crystal-clear fear in every feather on his face, it almost didn’t seem worth it.
Worth wondering why this… this no-good nobody, had somehow been put above him in the eyes of someone he’d found himself to truly care about. Past the simple want, purpose even, to protect those that can’t protect themselves. He cared about her, understood her and he’d thought she’d understood him. To have that ripped out from under him… felt like he’d been dunked in ice water to drown.
The burning behind his eyes echoed that of the pain in his chest. Overwhelming to the point where he just wanted to go home and just not feel in the void of sleep for a while.
He nearly let go.
But then Tenga saw his reflection in Russet’s eyes. Despite the dimmed daylight the tears were unmistakeable in his own.
Worst still, Russet was looking at Kena over his shoulder with desperation. Hope maybe.
In a flash the fist he’d held poised and ready struck the Quill. Just once. But with all the fury he had in one go, one was all he needed. Like bursting through a damn. Tenga didn’t even see the guy crumple, his vision blurred and the edges red. Wouldn’t be able to tell you if he heard a lick of noise in response either.
It hurts. It hurts. It hurts.
It’s all he heard, thumping in his head against ears that felt stuffed with wool.
Why him? Why her?
A second wave of anger rolled through him and he reared up again to deliver another strike to the Quill’s blurry face.
But then it was like his own action rebounded on him. Suddenly he was on his back, dazed and not registering any pain while that in his chest drowned it out. Habitually he kicked up to get free, only for his efforts to fall flat. He was pinned in a hold to the ground he didn’t have the current strength or knowhow to counter.
Tenga was shocked enough to blink his eyes clearer, to focus on the blacks and greys above him swimming into a familiar form.
“Kena?” he breathed, blinking like he’d been shoved into a dreamscape and nothing made sense, “What…”
Claws dug into his shoulders and he winced mostly out of instinct. Or maybe it was the sight of the wet trails down her cheeks. The horror and fear and anger in the grit in her teeth. In the scarlet eyes burning like fire.
“Why would you do that!” she howled, and with a start he heard an undercurrent of betrayal and hurt.
“Why would you hurt someone like that! Someone who just didn’t want to fight, he didn’t do anything! I thought you were better than that.” She trailed off abruptly, squeezing her eyes shut. His eyes fluttered at the sudden appearance of moisture on his cheek.
No, not her. Don’t…
But Kena was already shoving off him. Already walking away.
Pushing himself up on his forearms to watch in near shock. Mind reeling, trying to make sense of how a simple night could turn his whole world around.
Then it clicked.
She didn’t know.
Tenga pushed himself to stand, new determination driving him up. Briefly he glanced behind to see the way ahead now clear. Good, he’d run off. But still Tenga berated himself giving the bastard even that much attention.
Kena hadn’t walked far. If she felt as betrayed and hurt as he had (still did) then he didn’t blame her. Defeat didn’t carry you far if you didn’t have a way to improve past it.
Slowly he walked up to her, each step careful to not make a sound. Not to surprise her, how she sat she could no doubt see him coming in her peripheral anyway. No, he didn’t want to disrupt anything around her more than he already had.
He came to a steady stop a couple feet from her. As he did her head turned to face away. But she hadn’t walked away again either and that counted for something. His neck lowered so his nose pressed into her shoulder. She didn’t react, and for now that was all he needed.
“You don’t know, do you?” he said quietly in the space left between them. Her long soft ear closest twitched, acknowledging the question.
He already knew the answer.
If it had been a 'yes I do', then she would be too good for him.
He wanted to believe that wasn’t true. Just this once, he wanted to be selfish. Put his pain in front of everyone else's, just for a moment.
So he told her everything.
Hmm... yep!
Not counting those in the second panel
