Description

"Yeehaw!"  Rover Finnigan leaped enthusiastically through the ancient, crumbling, doorway and into the jungle beyond.  He whipped his hat off and slapped his knee with it in a gesture that both expressed his excitement and brushed off the yellow-tinged cobwebs.  "That was just like the Little Big Horn, except there ain't no horses or Indians."  He shoved his hat back onto his head and glanced casually over his shoulder where his small, blue comrade was emerging behind him.  "You know, you'd think a civilization that has robots and forcefields would have come up with better booby traps than spears falling from the ceiling."

"T...they seem pretty effective."

"Nah!  We breezed through 'em alright."  Without even waiting for a reply he beconed with one big arm toward the surrounding jungle.  "We'd better get a move on.  Them 'bots won't be fooled by yer little short circuit for long."  With an eager whoop he started running.    "Last one to the shuttle has to give Nana her bath!"

He had only gone about a hundred feet, certain he had a good enough head start, when he heard Flyspur's voice behind him.

"Rover!  Wait...please..."

"You think I'm fallin' for that again you..."  Rover slowed just enough to look over his shoulder, then he skidded to an abrupt stop.

The Jssfloon's skin was pale except for the freckle-like markings under his eyes, which were flaring a deep purple.  His small lower arms hugged his body as if trying to hold him up, while one upper hand clutched his arm near the shoulder where violet liquid trickled rivulets down his blue skin.  Rover leaped forward, but wasn't quick enough to catch him as he stumbled and crumpled to the ground.

(funny, Flyspur is the most cautious of the crew and I've already gotten him into trouble twice....but I had a reason.  I wanted to explain this)

From the scientific journals of Dr. Cloud Featherstone

Blood Sleep:

Due to a surprisingly low clotting factor in their blood the Jssfloon are highly susceptible to severe blood loss from even relatively minor injuries.  With no treatment even a small cut can take up to an hour to coagulate enough to completely arrest hemorrhaging.  However this people have an interesting, if not slightly worrysome, survival mechanism.  During blood loss (the sensitivity of this function seems to vary.  In some individuals it may be triggered by the smallest cut, while in others it may only come about after immidiate life threatening injuries) three of a Jssfloon's four hearts will stop completely, while the fourth slows to three beats per minute, reducing blood loss to a bare minimum.  The individual generally loses consciousness as the third heart ceases function.  Respiration is reduced to one shallow breath per minute and most internal processes, such as digestion, slow to an almost undetectable rate.  This phenomenon both reduces blood loss and gives the injury time to properly coagulate.

Blood Sleep is an involuntary reaction.  However, at times, with intense concentration it can be delayed.  Which is certainly not reccomended.  (note to self:  remember to stress this in first mate's next checkup)

I'm all for taking advantage of natural healing functions when possible. I'm even more strongly in favour of avoiding the need to do so. Pobrecito! Sharp booby traps are just no fun (not that crushing ones are any great shakes either). I can't make up my mind on whether you actually drew the blood in purple or if it's pencil like everything else and I'm just off my rocker. About all they've got going for them here is that at least Flyspur is might lighter than Rover, so as far as carrying one of them goes, it could be worse.

Yep. Sharp things are Jssfloons worst nightmare. There is a reason they are nervous around anything that can cut them.

It was all done in pencil, then I added a hint of purple on the computer.

That is indeed what they have going for them. Flyspur weighed very little and it's a simple job for Rover to just pick him up and take off running.

I feel better knowing that. Especially with colour on computer screens it can be hard to tell when a subtle difference actually exists and when its just one of those things.
It's very good of you to put folks back together if you damaged them when playing. Most considerate. I'm glad to see the adventures you come up with, and I'm always just as glad to see the calmer happier moments you envision. Very good balance.

Aww no D: Tell me he makes it through!

But definitely some very interesting facts about Flyspur's species. This is pretty fascinating.

Still... Tell me he makes it! D:

If Rover has the presence of mind to put a tourniquete on him and can get him back to the shuttle, where they have a Jssfloon blood clotting medication, he should be okay.  Despite what it seems Blood Sleep is a good thing, it keeps him from bleeding too badly.  The problem with it happening here is that in a few seconds he's going to be unconscious and they aren't out of danger yet.

Oh god that's a pretty bad situation. O.o I'll just imagine them getting out of it okay. XD I love those two so much. They're awesome OC's.

If Rover puts his mind to it he can plow through just about anything, and he's never had a better reason to push his limits.

Flyspur, don't leave us! Hang in there man!

He's really got to stop worrying the crew so much by almost dying... That's twice already.

He'll be alright if Rover can get him to the shuttle.  They have a med kid there with a clotting medication specifically for this problem.  The trouble is, the shuttle is a long way off and they're not completely out of danger yet.  With Flyspur as unconsious as anyone could possibly be Rover's going to have to carry him through whatever problems lie in their way.

I know, right?  Actually this pic was pretty much to go with the explanation of blood sleep but the small story kind of ended up coming with it.   There will probably be a much larger story that this scene will fit in, but that will be later.

Oh no! D: Man, poor Flyspur has really been getting into deep doo-doo lately I hope Flyspur will survive this ;.;

I also noticed that Rover looks a little beat up, as well :/

chill13 In reply to LabelPerginu [2014-01-31 15:49:39 +0000 UTC]

I know.  And usually he's the one who tries hardest to stay OUT of trouble.  Which, honestly is a very difficult thing with a friend like Rover.  He'll be alright if Rover can get him to the shuttle.  One of Jssfloon's most popular exports is a clotting agent and they've thought ahead enough to keep some a supply in their medical ward as well as some on their two shuttles.

His problem right now is that he has to carry him to the shuttle, which, no matter how light he is, is going to make getting back complicated as they are certainly not out of danger yet.

Yep.  This particular adventure has not been kind to either of them.  But Rover's the kind of guy who can have a broken arm and he'll still accept a challange to a tennis match.

Uh oh ;~; Sounds like there's a few more "booby traps" up ahead. I hope they aren't as fatal o.o

Yeah, I realized he has a black eye there and a tear through his sleeve :c Aw, such a strong guy C':

There is indeed.

I don't know if it's strength of character or he's just stubborn.  It can be a good quality when they're in trouble but it's also a pain for the Doc because he won't go to the med bay even if he really needs it.  He usually says:  "I got better things to do than sit on that silly little table all day."  If you ask me I think getting a medical scan makes him nervous but he'd never admit it.

(actually this pic was just supposed to go with the explaination of 'blood sleep' but you know I can't draw a picture without having SOME kind of story with it)

Oy vey :/

Hmm…well, according to how you described it, it sounds like stubbornness to me x'3 He looks like one of those 'tough' characters who have a secret fear of doctors or anything medical cx

( Oh well, of course! A story always gives us a sense of the situation.)

My grandpa is like that.  He went to work (at a mill mind you) for an entire week with a broken foot.  And he only went to the doctor because his wife saw it was turning black and made him go.

I love Rover's nickname for Flyspur, though, 'Blue'. Can't wait to see more, I'm really loving your story!

Yeah, he's not doin' well.

I think that nickname started very early on in their friendship.  He called him Blue because he couldn't remember his name, and it stuck.

So glad you're likeing it.

That's cool. My nickname is Red. My dad calls me that, anyway, because of my auburn hair.

Yes, I'm really liking your story- especially Rover!

chill13 In reply to TwilightKeyblade928 [2014-01-31 16:58:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, if that isn't cool!  I've always liked red hair.  Dyed mine red once.

TwilightKeyblade928 In reply to chill13 [2014-02-02 19:58:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!  My hair is technically more brown than red, I guess, but I have sort of a copper-like tint to my hair, which makes it kind of a dull auburn. I dye it sometimes, though, to make the color a bit brighter and prettier. The first time I dyed my hair, I ended up with too much red and it turned my hair bright maroon! That was when my dad started calling me 'Red'. But that's okay, since I've always liked red hair, too.

It would certainly help!  But it wouldn't stop him from going into the Jssfloon version of hybernation.
