Description
Handle Wrapping Technique: Level 4 (Ito - Hineri Make Style)Hooray! we have finnally reached an actual technique to wrap sword handles, and it has taken me a damn long time to learn it aswell. This is the most basic and most common method of wrapping sword handles however it is rather difficult to find the right colour ito. That is why people turn to using ribbon, but doing these twists and turns with ribbons, is very difficult becuase it always slips. So you wanne get yourself some shoe laces which is the closest thing to an actual "ito". Now you would ussually tie off the end of the knot by threading it through a hole in a cap, that will not be covered in this tutorial im afraid. Learning it from scratch it should take no longer than half an hour.

Yay for shoelaces! That's what I originally used to wrap Wabisuke, until I was able to buy ribbon. Lol! Once again, great tutorial! This should help lots of potential swordsmakers!

Very true! XD I just mean that some other sword related tutorials I've found are basically useless in helping beginners or even those that have an idea what they're doing, whether it's poor instructions or bad visuals or whatnot.

This is exactly the technique I started with xD Dumb of me to start with one of the hardest, but at least it's not hard anymore! I've always used ribbon, you're right about the slipping, but I've used it so many times that I can do it fine without slipping
I am always confused by the diagrams of the end not, so I usually glue the ends down

well done if you had used one of the hardest techniqus 8D heck when I first made tensa zangetsu I could not work out how to do it lol, so envious >.<
The last final knot is blurry, sorry about that, I had my hands full (get it XD)

xD I did it with Rukia's sword (the name escapes me >.> and twice with Ukitake's sogyo no kotowari in release, and then 3 more times to fix the sogyo no kotowari and rukia's sword

Great! As long as you know that this is not the only actual way that Japanese swordmakers did it. You last (#3) method was also an actual way, and there are many, many other variations...

my other method used a hot glue gun to seal the end, by no means is that a traditional way XD but I understand your point ^^ there are many others and the final with be in the level 5 8D

I dunno about hard; I tried something like ito with a lanyard with Shinsou, but gave up because it was just practice.

chioky In reply to Gin-Kusanagi [2008-12-11 23:05:49 +0000 UTC]
it is difficult depending on what type of ito you used, if its thick and strong it will be easy ^^

badass!!!
I have never used this technique with quality material. a good shoe lace or ito may make all the difference
because using thin ribbon ....tends to roll up after some handling ._.
- the end part, what I do is a little different.
from step 13
rather then cut and sew the ito. I flop it over the tsuka (the handle), push the Kashira (sword butt) on over the Tsuka
and then tuck whatever is left of the ito under the closest diamond.
this hold the kashira and ito in place nice-n-snug, and If you ever need to unwrap, you can.
-well chioky you have made another great tutorial, what could be next for level 5?

chioky In reply to Drunken-Dark-Soul [2008-12-11 23:10:19 +0000 UTC]
indeed you want to look for a good thick and strong ito and it will do the job wonderfully 8D
well technically by making a cap and tucking in the ito thats how your suppose to do it lol, but that will be included for the level 5, however the tsukamaki is twisted differently into a more "fancy" style ^^

why of course by making a cap and slotting it through in the end thats level 5 handle wrapping ^^ but the tsukamaki is twisted differently 8D

the one i'm trying out right now is the same as with my old style but different ito" i'm trying to utilize a single string ito i'm trying to emulate a handle i saw (need more practice with it ),looking forward to your lvl 5 can't wait, i want to try a different way of twisting the ito,
btw if you put paper wedges(thin plastic sheets works fine to) in between the two folds making the triangle shape in the handle it will make your handle look much neater and it will also give your handle wrap much depth got it from a very old tsukamaki guide i read in the past thats how i do my handle, just a suggestion tho

Hmm I dunno about shoelaces o.o If it works, it works!
What I recommend, since you can usually find these in most fabric stores (depending on what they are made off, it can be less than a $1 to $3 per yard o.o) are... well, "fabric tape". Not the sticky tape n.n; The non-stretchy kind of elastic tape, I suppose o_o; A long fabric ribbon with varying widths and colors~
I bought a couple yards of a black one (roughly $2-3 in total), 3/8" width, for the last minute sword I made for the convention (doh, I dun have the picture up... yet). Unfortunately I lost it once I reached the handle part >.>; So I just cut strips of fabrics to wrap the sword... Oh wells~
However, I actually don't know how it would actually look using these "fabric tapes", but I'm sure they won't slip as much as ribbons do. And it doesn't require a lot of sewing! n.n; (just the ends to prevent it from fraying...)
And yea, just like to mention another alternative to shoelaces (sewing the laces together when you run out seems inconvenient =x= ) and the "ito" n.n;;...
Hopefully this comment is helpful D: I've been dying to go to the woodshop and work on SOMETHING! Curse these exams >.>;
(btw happy belated birthday~)

this fabric tape, sounds very mysterious lol, I have not actually come across this type of fabric before so it leaves me quite clueless at what your trying to explain im afraid, but thanks alot for liking this alternative handle wrapping idea XD

It's a little confusing to describe maybe ><;; I forgot if there's a more specific word for it. People usually find these sewn onto sleeves/pants to add a stripe design (like Adidas clothes?) -x-; But yea, at least I know where to get some if I ever make a sword... I really want to try out these wrapping tutorials of yours! xD You explain it quite well, and I get confused by some other sites' tutorials x.x;;
Thanks for posting these, and I look forward to seeing other variety of wrappings~

Yeah, this one is difficult. But it looks so awesome.
I have a pen that I wrapped some cord around it to look like that. I may have done it a harder way.
I'm going to be needing this really soon. I need to make a Tensa Zangetsu for my Ichigo cosplay.
