Description

Fluttershy's cottage was bathed in warm light and the sweet humming of its inhabitant as the yellow pegasus flew about, dusting shelves and picture frames. The creaking of the cottage door drew her attention and she looked to see the lavender filly sulk in with her saddle bags stuffed with school work. Fluttershy frowned at the expression her daughter wore as well as her pressence.

"Hi Mama Fluttershy." said the young pony, levitating her saddlebag off and setting it by the couch.

"Mama Fluttershy?" She repeated with a crinkle of her brow as she landed beside her daughter. "What... what happened to Flu-flu?" she tried for a smile and pushed Harmony's bangs behind her ear. The filly had always called her Flu-flu since she'd first learned to talk.

Harmony wrinkled her nose. "Mom, I'm a big girl now."

Fluttershy tried not to seem to upset. "Not that I'm not happy you're here, but aren't you supposed to go to Twilight's after school to do homework?" The look on Harmony's face told her mom that something was bothering her. "What's wrong?"

The filly shifted her weight back and forth on her hooves. She didn’t want to say, but she'd been taught to always be honest, and since Fluttershy had asked her directly she couldn’t ignore it. "I'm... having trouble with reading... and Mama Twilight is so smart, I don't want her to think I'm... stupid."

The pegasus' eyes softened and she pulled her daughter into a hug. "Your Mama Twilight would never think that. She'll be proud of you no mater what, but if it's really bothering you that much, you can do your homework here and I'll help you with your reading."

Harmony let out a sigh, her shoulders relaxing. "Thank you Flu-flu." she said with a smile and leaned close against her mother.

A few minutes later -after bribing a very annoyed Angel Bunny to take a note to Twilight and inform her the whereabouts of their daughter- the two of them were settled down on the ground. Fluttershy wove locks of Harmony's tail together as she tried to read the book assignment for her class.

"A-nd theee uh-…. The uhn-…." She groaned in frustration.

"Sound it out." Fluttershy said calmly as she continued to twist the strands of hair, weaving in a flower.

"Uh-n-ik-orn, unicorn! And the unicorn tr- try- trapped-"

"Trotted." Came the quiet correction.

"ARG! Why am I so bad at this?!" Harmony demanded, tears of frustration stinging in her eyes. "I am stupid! And Eggy is going to hate me." he frustration turned to sadness and she sniffled and started to cry

In and instant Fluttershy stopped what she was doing and put a hoof under Harmony's chin, making her turn her head to meet her eyes. "Don't talk like that. None of your mothers will EVER hate you. We all love you, exactly as you are. Do you think Mama Rainbow hates me because I'm not good at flying? Of that Mama Pinkie hates me because I'm bad at throwing parties?"

"No." the filly sniffled through her tears "They love you…"

"Yes they do." said Fluttershy with a nod. "And you have to remember, every pony has things they are good at, and things they aren't. You are a very smart and capable filly, Harmony. You're good with numbers, you're already talented at levitation, AND you're already learning to wink! Do you know how special that is?" she asked and continued after her daughter shook her head. "Some unicorns never learn teleportation. Even your Mama Twilight didn’t learn to wink until after she got her cutie mark."

The crying quieted and Harmony sniffled one last time. "Really? I'm winking before Eggy?" she asked with a small, tentative smile

"Mmm-Hmm." Fluttershy nodded. "Now, try sounding it out again. When you finish the page we can break for cookie."
