Description
Tutankhamun, born Tutankhaten -- an ancient Egyptian pharaoh made famous by the discovery of his wealthy tomb....Back in the beginning of the summer, shortly after I'd gotten to Canada, a friend named Emily saw some copper relief work in an art store and asked how they were made. The saleswoman was very snobbish with her and "could not say." So I took her and left and explained that I'd done a project in middle school and that we could stop by an art store later and I would teach her.
We picked up some sheets from Michaels. I got copper, and she stuck with aluminum, which was cheaper. The colour inspired me to try something Egyptian and so I aimed for a classic. It was just started to show her what to do, using the wooden tools to gradually "push out" the metal in designs, but I became so interested that I took the piece to completion in my spare time within a week. Sorry that I haven't gotten around to showing you guys until now.
The finished product with black was achieved by painting over with a perminant marker and rubbing it off with steel wool.

Amazing work! It looks so fantastic ... And actually thanks for the commentary with it, very interesting
I wonder would Tut like this? Lol, I think he'd die of shock at his surroundings before he'd get the chance to tell us! I'd say he would though

I wonder if he was old enough to appreciate art yet. *snicker* Maybe I should have had a go at Akhanaten, instead?

Lol, yeah. I always forget that he was about 10 right?! Actually that might make him go ''Oooh shiny!!''
But Akhenaten is probably the wiser choice from the family. I'm sure he'd believe it was himself if you said so!

Akhenaten is fascinating, to me. He took a step in the right direction when he proclaimed there was only one God; then he messed up and mistook the sun for God I think.

At least he was half-right then
History is always fascinating, but I think areas like Egyptian history are so intriguing because it seems kind of surreal or something...

A bit. The fun thing was that I had it around to work on when there was nothing else to do, at the time.

Thanks! I think it's a part of a lot of art curriculums. Maybe give it another try some time; these things can only get better with practice!

we are learning about this in art history, I think thats called reposse. Beating metel from the back?
That's an interesting story too. I can never understand mean salespeople...

Kind of like beating, but you only need to push because it's a thinner copper.
And yeah. I don't know what her problem was. I guess we were young to her and to her, we couldn't have been "serious about art."

Indeed.
The scanner doesn't do it a whole lotta justice.
But I'd like to try it Heather, we never got a chance to...
/tacks it onto long list of art projects yet to complete....

We'll figure something out. Art stores everywhere have these. I'll be surprised if they don't make you do one eventually.
You know what would be cool? A computer program using pressure-sensitive wacoms to create "impressions" and allow relief work, or even clay modelling on a 3D set of "clay."

Chrishankhah In reply to Starstoryteller [2006-12-24 09:36:23 +0000 UTC]
Copper relief is all I ever heard it referred to as, but I believe that's the correct term.
Any art store should sell the basic kit--a couple wooden tools and the copper sheet. Use a couple stacks of newspaper as a soft surface to create the impressions, and do like I described with the magic marker, colouring all parts leaving no shine showing through, then rubbing off with steel wool. Make sure you leave a border when doing the "etching" so that you can fold the sharp edges over when you're finished. (Best to fold it over something, like cardboard, so its not flimsy!) There are probably sites on the subject that go into more detail. ^_^
