Description "The wheels! They've collapsed!"

Watch this space for an upcoming time-lapse video!

Remember that episode when the World Navy broke Thunderbird 2? Terror in New York City is easily my favourite Thunderbirds episode, mainly because it really shakes up the formula, it gives us a rescue which normally would be quite straight forward, except in this case, the World Navy ship "Sentinel" Β picked up TB2 on their radar, couldn't figure out what it was so they decided to blow it up, gits...

The resolution is pretty cool and the final rescue is pretty tense, the episode is also full of iconic imagery, The Empire State building collapsing and of course Thunderbird 2 crashing.

I felt it would be nice to come full circle for my 200th deviation and do an image of Thunderbird 2 again. Funnily enough, as I have been working quite a bit with the new Thunderbirds, it took a while getting used to working on the older 'birds again as in many ways the designs are pretty similar.

I have been following the fan reactions as more of the new series is being revealed and unfortunately the Facebook group I manage is once again devolving into the same arguments as always. My advice, it is different in many ways, but different doesn't = bad. Expect it, go in with an open mind and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Also welcome to my new flat / Studio!

Kudos to Andrew Clements for coming up with the title.

This is a stunning piece of art! You captured the scene so well, I remember that episode. Very awesome job! Fantastic Detail! The fire looks super realistic and the whole picture looks full of action. I can find NOTHING wrong with this amazing picture! You have clearly put 100 % effort into this masterpiece! Well done on everything, I really, really love it! Keep up the awesome work! I really love beautifully you drew both Thunderbird 1 and Thunderbird 2. You've made them look perfect and you've done well with their detail. This is truly a a wonderful, fantastic drawing! Awesome!

Just before the move of the Empire State Building began, the ground ahead was starting to open up beneath it!

That's a great example of startling the audience!

Back when I was a child in the 90s, I used to watch Thunderbirds from a couple of video tapes that my parents had recorded. Unfortunately,Β those tapedΒ episodes were mostly (if not completely)Β from season 2. As such, I never saw this episode as a child, and when I first saw it years later, I felt kinda sad that I couldn't connect any childhood nostalgia to it, and especially this moment right here.

For starters, let me say, great work.

Also, this is interesting:

In the season 3 premiere of Thunderbirds are GO! (The reboot TV show) Thunderbird 2 gets hit by these drones and its VTOL thrust is compromised. Everyone thinks TB2 is screwed, but Virgil has other ideas. So what does he do? Fly "The Big Bird" back home and crash land the thing on the runway. And he does it. With MINIMAL damage to TB2. That's right. MINIMAL. Is Virgil OP pls nerf? You decide.

The episode's name is "Earthbreaker," in case anyone was wondering.

As a little kid when I first saw Thunderbird 2 being hit by those missile and descend towards the ocean with its tail on fire, I was horrified and saddened, I cried as Thunderbird 2 descended, but when Virgil pulled Thunderbird 2 up and away from the ocean, I was incredibly relieved.

I don't know why so many shows and movies depict military forces opening fire on targets they have not identified. Such a thing just would not happen in real life. Especially after the US navy shot down a commercial jet in Israel years ago.

That was a very good episode. I wonder why they didn't re-used footage of "Terror in New York City" in "Security Hazard" for the flashback scene involving Thunderbird 4 instead of "Day of Disaster" (which was a good episode as well )?

Another good Thunderbirds episode who seem to be underrated is "The Impostors" where Lady Penelope, Parker along with Agent Jeremiah to find the real culprits who tried to put the crime of stolen secrets documents on International Rescue.

I bloody love each of the new designs. They're exactly what should have been done. Still, the "different = bad" meme is going to be perpetual.Β Personally, I'm a little bothered that it might be dumbed down for a modern CITV audience and that the shorter running time will make it less epic, but that's it, and it's those aren't necessarily bad things. The experience of the voice talent suggest it'll be really well acted throughout and all indications point towards it at least looking spectacular. I mean, this shot of a production preview show that the guys making it seem to definitely get it:Β 33.media.tumblr.com/b08ac14e8f…

I assume from your hint that you have the newer TB designs modelled and are going to start doing some work with them? Looking forward to it!

I can see what you mean, and I respect your opinion, so please don't take offense, but I think that the shorter time hasn't made it any less epic and I just realised when you posted this comment. Never mind.

Armondikov In reply to RedDawn2203 [2015-12-06 16:25:11 +0000 UTC]

I don't know why I'd take offence over a concern written in October 2014 when the series didn't air until the following April. The shorter run-time is hardly noticeable given the writing style. They actually manage to slam more characterisation into it by tightening up the scripts compared to the original.

The only thing it loses is that the ability to do more convoluted plots (e.g., 30 Minutes After Noon) and a few of the protracted failures that lead up to IR getting involved (e.g., Trapped in the Sky and Pit of Peril).

Chrisofedf In reply to Armondikov [2014-10-14 22:32:29 +0000 UTC]

It has to an extent but it is still pretty sophisticated, the younger brothers are my main gripe about it. Love the epic scope of some of the stories however.

Had them modelled by Christmas last year

Terror in New York City remains one of my favourite episodes - it's so much different to the usual formula of the show. Β It's not the only time a Thunderbird would meet a sticky situation (TB1 getting shot down by the Zombites, or TB3 nearly crashing into the sun), but the scene of Virgil nursing in the crippled TB2 very much stands out in my memory.

Can't help feeling that something is slightly off with TB2's nose in this picture, though. Β The windscreens seem to be just a tad offset to the rear. Β And I also seem to remember that her vertical tails were quite fire-damaged as she came in to land. Β But that's probably my inner Thunderbirds nerd screaming, so don't pay any attention to that...
