Description
Part of the set of:And a companion piece to:
Some people say this thing was designed to appeal to Lego builders, personally I give the designer more credit. Thunderbird 3 was probably the most "retro" looking of the classic Thunderbirds and it has been interesting watching how modern designers interpret it.
Rather than going for the obvious and simply making it a space plane, TB3 has continued to be a reusable, Rocket based SSTO and has always kept her iconic nacelles, which for the new series now house extendable grasping arms.
The controversial aspect of the design is the square boosters, which is where most of the "Lego", "mine-craft" jibes come from and I must confess thats what surprised me the most when I first saw it. But I have to say, in addition to looking like Aerospikes they do give the craft a more hefty, less fragile look.
The Dominic Lavery film one is still my favourite, but maybe a few more years of this may change that
Made in Vue, Blender, Photoshop
10 years of doing this and I just worked out what a spectacular map was... go me...
It's actually interesting going through this these 5 TAG pictures. After I did TB2 I basically went on a mad drive learning as much new stuff as I could and I think the result kind of shows by the time you hit TB3, probably need to go back and do some tweaking

I think TB3 is by far my favourite of the redesigns. I like that it can carry stuff, has more abilities, and its used a lot more this time.

The overall chunkier design does make it look sturdy but the rectangular boosters are a bit odd, it could have simply had a thicker attachment for them.
Pfft, square boosters wouldn't make it easier to make in lego or MC though, they're still at 120 degree angles from eachother.

The 2004 TB3 is pretty much the only one to look great, but I love the grappling arms on this version.Β

I agree from a design standpoint the square boosters are a bit more realistic in rocket deigns. You need a lot of power to leave the planet. I still love how T3 remains nimble and sleek in action. The design also seems to compliment the little brother, Alan. He's the little firecracker of the group with lots of strength and solid minded logic under pressure, but also approachable and friendly. T3 seems to reflect Alan most in that he is the brother who loves to explore the universe and that can only really be done in this craft. The new design is younger, but still clearly a Tracy standby.

Do you think you'll do the new Thunderbird Shadow when Kayo gets her own story? (Apart from Fireflash)

Most likely. I actually have decent references for it, but I don't want to jump the gun and piss off ITV.

Gorgeous work. Loving the moody lighting in this piece (though I'm no expert by any means!). I do like the modernised version of Thunderbird 3; it just feels more 'functional' to me. As for the rest of your gallery...stunning. I'm a fan

This is a very nice image and, like most of your work, goes straight into my favourites. Β This is not really a criticism, because "artistic licence" and all that, but I do wonder why Alan would be outside on his 'surfboard' while TB3's main engines are firing Β

Ahhh well glad someone is doing the new T-Birds - what I love is the attention to detailing in the re-design; there is a central internal revolving system to create gravity, it obeys the laws of space well, and is a far more versatile ship but not once does the tech go into magical stupidity.
The arms were a surprise but it makes the design work; what I love best is that they kept TB3 without it descending into New Trek territory; she is more than a rocket - and that is a good thing.
Your render is excellent

Nice! I actually really like the new Thunderbird 3, even the rectangular thrusters. I do have some criticisms with it however; the main ones being how small it is compared to the original, the nose looks like it should come apart any second and that bloody 'space board' thing. Β Β
Personally I think if someone were to meld all three designs for TB3 together that would be the definitive version.Β

The official specs in both the trailer for TB3 in the runup to the show's release and the labelled diagram on their Twitter and Facebook
And nah, the docking clamps just extend for docking, the nose stays put

Nice upload Chris
Do you know of any new books, comics or even a magazine that might be coming out in the near future to do with the new series of Thunderbirds ?.
All I've seen so far is the current episodes available on DVD, the new toy line [no FAB 1 ? what the hell Ma'Lady !!], a play suit and a poster.
