Description With Red Dwarf having just been resurrected by Dave, I figured i'd take the time to pay tribute to some of the Iconic shows the BBC has brought to us over the years. I have a lot of respect for these shows as they've all prioritised substance over style and have provided quality entertainment on little or no budgets.
This was the organisation that saw a Thermos flask, called it a spaceship and still told a gripping story. (See "Out of the Unknown" (That is if they hadn't destroyed every record of it... silly BBC)).

Undoubtedly the centrepiece of this image, the Jupiter Mining Corporation ship Red Dwarf, possibly the ugliest ship ever designed. It is a 6 mile labyrinth of story telling possibilities. 3 million years from home and crewed by the last human alive, the descendant of his cat, a hologram of his neurotic dead bunk mate, a malfunctioning sanitation robot and its onboard computer with an IQ of 6000, the same IQ as 6000 PE teachers..
The ship changed a lot over time for various unknown reasons, this is the version I liked the most, the newest version.

The Liberator, from Blake's 7. A mysterious vessel from an unknown alien race which enables freedom fighter Roj Blake to wage war on the tyrannical Federation. Legend has it the effects budget for a Blake's 7 episode was Β£50. Luckily the team did some great work with what they had and the writing was really some of the best in Sci-fi.
Had trouble sizing the liberator as i wanted it to be visible as Red Dwarf is literally so big. It's said to be huge when first seen so I settled for about a mile.

The Heart of Gold featured in the BBC's adaption of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". Which to me is much better than the recent film. Powered by the Infinite Improbability drive the ship is capable of immediately travelling to any point of the universe, with only minor short term side effects to the crew... like turning them into sofa's or wooly versions of themselves.

The T.A.R.D.I.S, from Doctor Who, A science fiction show started in 1963 planned to teach children about science and history while also providing exciting entertainment, it was only really set to last a year, you've probably never heard of it...
In a weird way the TARDIS is literally the prefect plot device, It's a small compact space craft, that can literally go anywhere at any time as well as do anything the script requires. Having it's interior in a different dimension (dimensionally transidental) add's to the intrigue as the inside of this ship literally could go on for ever. Which is probably one of the reasons the show can go for 33 series and beyond...

The Alien ship from Quatermass and the Pit. Quatermass was the Britain's first Sci-fi hero and is arguably the genesis of intelligent sci-fi television. Watching this show as an 11 year old terrified me as the dark and creepy story unfolded over it's 6 episodes. Some still say this was one of the best things the BBC ever made. Quatermass and the Pit caused quite a stir at the time over it's themes of racism and occultism as well as being genuinely pretty scary.

Made while lsitening to Geek and Sundry's "I'm the one thats cool" pretty much on loop [link] because it's true... and the Red Dwarf theme.

Well, I love the whole idea and the colours. the only thing I'd say is that (not unnaturally because of its size) the Red Dwarf dominates the picture. This makes the other ships very difficult to make out, particularly the Heart of Gold (I agree the Beeb's version was the better). The TARDIS is so Iconic with a capital I you can recognize it anywhere. Possibly you should think about taking this idea and turning it into a series of pictures, the history of science fiction on the BBC!

Cheers, funnily enough, originally this was just going to be a Red Dwarf pic. I started to add the other craft to get across the scale that was never really presented in the series.

Red Dwarf is a brilliant dark comedy, especially seasons 1 & 2.
Blake's 7 can be cheesy at times, but a magnificent retelling of the real Robin Hood legend.
Can't get enough of this stuff, but distributors in the U.S. think most Americans are too stupid to get Brit humor; sadly, they are right but for the rest of us, there is the Internet.

I just watched the new Red Dwarf a couple of days ago. It was most heartening, after the awful 'Back to Earth' mini-series.
I love the image you've created here - from the beautiful glow from the surrounding gas and dust, to seeing those iconic ships all in the same picture.

I am very glad its good, I enjoyed episode 2 as well.
I actually didn't mind Back to earth, it's main problem for me is that it's jarringly different and almost more drama than sit-com on some levels. There's still some really good laughs in there.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Lovely. I love 2 out of 4 of those shows and my hubby loves 3 out of 4. We're just not that familiar with Quatermass.
So has Red Dwarf come back in a new series? We saw the movie that was made a couple years back. We would love to catch up if it has come back as a series.

Yep Red Dwarf is back, now being made by the channel Dave, there's a catchup option on their site.

I'm recommending this for a DD!!!!

SylkRode [2012-10-10 14:36:16 +0000 UTC]

Actually, given measurements of the London, and comparing it to the Liberator, the best guess for her scale is only about 230 meters.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chrisofedf In reply to SylkRode [2012-10-10 21:51:08 +0000 UTC]

I looked up the same article, but I disagree as the interior space makes the london seem much larger. Besides the crew's reaction also implies a very lareg vessal.

Also 230 meters is surprisingly small especially when you take into account shuttle bays except pods and things.

The Blake's 7 mod for Star Trek Bridge commander gave a good size at about 900 meters.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SylkRode In reply to Chrisofedf [2012-10-11 18:52:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, Kirk's Enterprise has all those things, and the extra length there is all in the warp nacelles. Maybe 230 meters was real big by Terran Federation Standards. Difficult to believe, but possible.
