Description Celebrating 50 years of "Fireball XL5", or one year but it happened 50 years ago.

I've always had a fondness for this series, oddly not as much for the show but for the comics drawn by the amazing Mike Nobel and the class theme tune "Zero G" by Barry Gray.

While I do enjoy the show it sometimes lacks the sophistication of Supercar and Stingray, it still however has some brilliant episodes.

The comics on the other hand seemed geared to older readers and made for great action adventure stories.

Made with:
Vue 10
Photoshop
Simply 3d
Exploded stars.

The background is based on a piece of work by "Frostbo" I used it as a starting point then built up extra nebulas.

Also, check out my XL5 video tribute made some time back. [link]

Flip me, the new submission process is a bit of a nightmare...

Love the pic, makes you think what would XL5 be like if it was CGI'ed and brought up to date ?. Not to sure about the background craft but like the bridge detail but you can't see the crew ! Like the nebulae type background. The rear tail seems a bit too sharp (could have been a bit more rounded like the wing fins) Could have made the rear a little lighter but I see what you were trying to do with a silouhette effect. Also would have imagined brightness at the rear (engine glow) as it looks like its stationary. But all in all looks good !. Curious to see what the launch of XL5 from Space City would look like in your hands ?

First saw it on tv when I was little...actually the reruns, was more into thunderbirds and captain scarlet then XL5. But of course my favourite episode from XL5 was the one where the robot co pilot had to save the crew who had their memories wiped by some aliens.

Wow!! This is an incredible tribute to Fireball XL5! I've never seen the show myself, but I'm familiar with the design and do hope to see it one day. I know the theme song and am a pretty fair Gerry Anderson Fan.

Thanks I kind of grew up with the comics myself.

I thought I must have commented on this picture but apparently not. I love this. It's beautiful, the colours of the nebula are fantastic and support the ship beautifully and I love all the references to the other ships from the comics in the background

I was first exposed to the show, which I loved, as a 10 yar old boy, it had depth that silly hanna barbera cartoons simply didn't have. It was a little corny in spots but I could handle that, great music and yes you are correct it lacked some of the interesting story lines that Supercar had but I always though that XL5 was the complete package... consistent characters, setting and great music... did see the comics until I began recapturing my lost XL5 stuff form my youth... they were well rendered! Nice work, thanks for creating theses images. leas go o mine portfolio and see my XL5 images

And I thought I was the only one who remembered those comics strips...

Some of them *were* a bit dark in spots, like the alien suicide squad attacking the reception, or the salvage technician trapped in a crevasse with his truck dangling a damaged reactor core on a tow cable (call Tracy Island, someone!).

Love it! I always enjoy Fireball XL5 whenever I watch it (annoyingly I haven't read any of the comics because I can't find anywhere that stocks the TV Century 21 collections), and I absolutely love the design of XL5 itself, so any art I can find of it is great.

Also, is that Robert I can see in the cockpit?

It is a great design. I got all my compilations from either Water-stones, Forbidden Planet or amazon.

It's a rather dodgy attempt at Steve

I just can't stop looking at this. Fireball XL5 was my first ever sci-fi show (yes, I'm THAT old) and this image totally captures the feeling I got from it. You've made my day.

Perhaps XL5 was'nt sophisticated & the models & animation may be a little "Ropey" but as you say it was 50 years ago & then it was state of the art ! I watched it as a little boy and although I cant remember much now some things stuck in my mind; the launch sled (so cool), the hoverbikes, the glamourous venus & "robbie the robot". Of course, the theme song also stuck in my mind (as it was released as a 45 rpm 7" single record). I grew up with Gerry & Sylvia & all their productions. Thunderbirds & Captain Scarlet were my favourites but have fond memories of Joe 90 & Stingray. But even though XL5 was a distant memory it probably influenced a lot of later sci fi

Thats for the critique Steve is a little bit small, but he is in the cockpit.

Gorgeous! I love that you got the Earth battleship in, in the background.

And the Fireball herself will always be a fantastic looking craft.
