Description Hulk's a popular guy. That's ok though because he's so much fun to work on. This is my largest painting to date at 14 by 18 and it took what felt like an eternity to finish. I don't know if I'm just slow or if that's normal for painting. I had fun though and I think it came out pretty well, so I'll take it. Another tremendous learning experience. Every time I'm feeling like I understand this stuff, I'm given a nice slice of humble pie. Mmmm...my favorite! Valuable lessons learned that will hopefully help me next time.

Some oils are very transparent out of the tube. The purple I used for his pants were like that. I had to add white to it just to make it opaque enough to not look terrible. The first pass over on the pants was TERR-I-BLE. A streaky mess. Looks ok now, but I was sweating a bit on those damn pants. I also discovered mars black on this piece. I'd been using ivory black thinking "what's the difference?" There's a difference. Ivory has that transparency thing going on. Mars is a beautiful deep opaque black that looks wonderful and blends like a dream.

This was a great piece to work on.

Yeah you'll have that transparencie problem especially with tube secondary colors. If you keep your colors limited to the primaries black and white And mix all your own secondary's and hues you will get a lot better results from your oils. I always liked trying every color in the tube but it gets incredibly frustrating. Whya brand of oils are you using?

Keep up the good work!

I'm still a noob at painting, so I havent been mixing as much as I should. That seems to come later for people. I'm doing it more and more with each painting.

Keep up the good work.

Mixing is so important for every painter. during my degree i was required to take a color mixing class befor i could take a painting class. Despite the tedious nature of creating accurate color wheels and hue maps from mixing primaries it really helps one understand how color behaves and what it will do For you. What it won't do.

I really like your paintings! Keep it up.

Thanks. I could certainly use a better understanding of how colors behave. I learn something with every piece, but its going to be a long time before I feel like I actually understand the medium.

I agree! Painting is tough! I am always finding new challanges when painting. I am not a fan of oil myself. It's nice sometimes but I love acrylics best. They are hearty and thick and dry fast. And you can use them in all sorts of surfaces! Versatile! I like paying with media and surface.

I started with acrylic, but for some reason, it didn't speak to me. The first time with oils, it was a revelation. It felt so right. I wish it didn't in some ways. Acrylics are cheaper, easier in a lot of ways, more durable and can give you very similar results. Not too many downsides to it, but oils just feel right hehe.

Wonderful Hulk piece! Oils are a lot of fun, but yes, you will learn with experience how the different pigments interact with each other and the surface.

I have learned that the very best surface for oil paint is oil paint. In other words, prime your canvas, then do you under painting with plenty of pigment, then let it dry. You will then have the perfect surface to work. It seems you are learning just fine on your own, though.

Cheers!
