Description
This is my first Vampirella. Considering how many half nekid women I've been asked to draw over the years, that's kind of a miracle. I wasnt sure going in, but I ended up enjoying it. She's nice and simple and I was able to include a critter and some skulls. Good stuff. I was going for a Frazetta style Vampi, but it didnt quite work and I ended up with something else. It happens.Prismacolor cool and warm greys with white watercolor paint on vellum bristol board

Very nice! I like the way the colors fade into the background.

Very nice. My favorite bit (besides, you know, teh boobz n stuff) is the lightning bolt parting in her hair.
I wonder if details like that are planned and you leave a gap in the marker work as you go,
or if you black it out and then go in with some white after the fact?
Or is it just a "happy accident?"

Thanks! With black hair, I tend to think more abstractly and try to make interesting shapes. The bolt was probably a spontaneous thing that I came up with when I was drawing the shape of her hair. I say probably because I can't remember hehe. I does feel like something I would have drawn in pencil early on though.

Cool. It's always interesting to me hearing about another artist's process.
Never know when you'll learn something, even if it's just a different way of looking at something.
Cheers!

Beautiful passage of shading through her torso- you do such a nice job of softness and structure there!

You're gonna end up, being one of those guys that hangs out in the upper echelons of illustration with guys like Adam Hughes if you keep things going the the way you have been.

I have to say that I found the monster to be the most interesting. I'm really impressed with the coloring on it, especially since it was in marker. Great job all around tho man! I can definitely see the Frazetta influence so you got it in there.

if you were going for Frazetta, she needs to be a little "thicker". with that said, i think the eyes are dead-on his style, as well as the background. great work!!!

Yeah, I agree. I was referring to the face only. I'd like to go as juicy as Frank did, but most people prefer a medium, so I stick with that.

Aweseome, u r a master of your media Btw what is that u call "watercolour"? Is it guache? Paul Bonner paints with what they also call "watercolour" but it doesnt look like the traditional watery watercolour to me, at all. So u guess it's just water-based paint of some kind, probably guache as mentioned above

It's Dr. Ph. Martins Bleedproof White. A liquid watercolor. It's listed as a watercolor, but I'm no expert.Theres probably better ones out there, but this is what I'm familiar with right now.

Very nice. I especially like the detail/ textures you were able to create in the background images (the skulls, rib cage and especially the creatures tail)

Have you tried copic markers before? I was wondering what your opinion was on Copic vs Prismacolor.

ChristopherStevens In reply to jbyrd117 [2011-11-04 09:53:39 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Ive been using Copics for years. Those color pieces are done with Copics. I use them mostly for backgrounds as I like the tips on the Prismacolors more for deal work, but now that I have some sketch Copics, I'm starting to do more detail work with them.
