Description
This is what I've been working on lately. A while back, I decided to use one of the backgrounds from my quick sketches, and turn it into a piece of fanart.I was having some difficulty making a sketch that I found satisfying, and I was searching for some new fantasy novels to read. I found out about Temeraire from the contest, and those books really hit the spot.
Lawrence is in there, too. If you can find him. I tried to size him appropriately.
The color scheme is one of my favorites, but it is one I have used before. The bright warm and cool colors looked much better on this picture than earthy tones. I'll have to make another one that uses those colors soon. Maybe I'll do some more speedpaints for a while.
There might be one more piece of fanart coming, too.
Buildings are one of my weak areas, but I think they turned out decently well in this one. I tried to use a bit more perspective and straighter lines. Comments and criticism are always welcome.
Edit: Improved building textures, using a brick texture from [link]

Thank you.
The contrasting colors were one of the parts of this piece that I had a lot of fun with.
I'm glad to hear that the relative sizes of the characters looks good, too.
Laurence would be rather tiny, compared to Temeraire or the fort there.

Love it - love the sunset coloring and how I can pick out the vivid blues and opaline colors of his wings. Beautifully done.

It took some adjustments to get the color right, but I'm rather happy with how it turned out.

wow i dont know what looks better Temeraire or the backround. Seeing this makes me want to go to the artic and look for a dragon to call my own.
Also aney one saying iam crazy for thinking dragons existes just think about the fact that dragions apeare in just about all cultures of the world for many years. You can not yet prove or diprove the fact that dragions are real or not.

Geez!!
I love this guy. His stories are awesome!
This pic is incredible, you caught his majesty, and the grimm simplicity of his endeavors. And the sky seems to be onfire. Good deatil when you think the entire europe, and, by a certain extent, the world, was at war.

Indeed!!
Those novels are really cool. I love the way Naome Novik treats her characters. Even the enemies and general foes are very human. I really love the way she presented Napoleon. That guy was brilliant. Sad he had to use his talents to rain war over Europe
Oh, this piece is incredible. Now look at it at the sound of this music

I actually think that music would fit nicely as the theme for the whole Temeraire universe

Lol this might be a bit late comment, but i completely agree with what you said, especially about Napoleon. He is human and in many ways better than many of the persons in England in the stories, though Admiral Nelson was really great too.
But what i really like with the stories is how the world is changed in a very realistic way when you consider the dragons. The Aztec empire still stands (a single Cannon was not enough against Dragons i guess ), Africa is far more organized, it is just awesome.

Indeed! We can see she did thought everything really well
The humanization of the characters is really something I really apreciate. Makes verything much more interesting. Even Lien is cool, in her own way.
Is pretty cool universe. I'm still waiting to find the 4th book, and give it a read. Altough things may start to have a little of ending fatigue by the 6th, by what I was told

Triforce-Dragon In reply to S7alker117 [2011-02-08 21:52:00 +0000 UTC]
You really need to read the fourth and fifth books. Especially the fifth is probably the strongest of the series. I cant say why as that would be psoiling to much, but it is incredible, with some nice twists and many unforgetable moments.
I dont know exactly what `ending fatigueΒ΄ means, but the sixth book is the weakest of the series so far. Not saying it is bad, because it is defiently not. However it does end in a way which could make the series go anywhere in the last three books. Not to say to much, but it becomes very clear by the end that this is the tale of Laurence and Temeraire and not England against France with Dragons thrown into the mix.
However if there is one thing the last book left me, then it was fearful. Not for the quality of the future books, but for what is going to happen. Hints dropped throughout all the books are starting to come together in pattern which is not very bright and it makes me fear what might happen. I cant say what my fears are without spoiling some serius points, but I strongly suggest you read the next three books.

Yeah, I should read them, thats true! What I've saw so far was pure awesome.
As for ending fatigue. Its usualy used when a story as to many endings. I didnt used it in the right way in my previous post, but what I wanted to say was that in long running series, I do alwyas have the fear that we start to get tired of the characters, and that the author ends up without ideias for them. Its like, when a story starts to get too long, it may start to become each instalment more weak and unoriginal. I kinda fear that for Temeraire. It happened with Artemis Fowl. The first two books were awesome, the others, not so much.
But maybe Naomi Novik can have a few more tricks on her sleeve, who knows

Triforce-Dragon In reply to S7alker117 [2011-02-10 16:00:15 +0000 UTC]
If its the story becoming stale then that is most certainly not a fear you should have about Temeraire. The reason the sixth book is the weaker is not because it is stale, it is more because it is, how should i say this, less involved in an overall plot. It is more focused around what is going on here and now and less about what is happening in the world outside. It fits the setting, but it also means you dont really know what is happening to certain characters or in the war itself, which i really missed.
The sixth book also features the return of a certain Captain from the first book...
But the story does not stale in the least. There are several plots which first really start to be laid out by book 4 and 5 and several of them are closely connected to both Laurence and Temeraire as well as Napoleon and Lien
But it is not stale when it comes to the characters as we see some significant development on especially LaurenceΒ΄s part. It is a development which has slowly been surfacing throughout the books and really starts to show by the end of book 4. But it is by the end of book 6 it culminates in an ending which makes me unable to guess where the story will go. I suspect Naomi auctally choose this ending to kinda get a very clean slate to work with for the next few books, but that might just be me...
Oh and if you only have just finished book 3 then you have not even begun to experience Iskearka in fullest. She is an awesome character and very unlike any other characters in the series at that point.
I dont think the series is getting ending fatigue in the least. I personally cant wait for more with Laurence and Temeraire.

They're good stories. As a wannabe novelist, they also taught me how to keep the story moving and also add some emotional weight to stuff.
I wa simpressed in the third book how the characters did move from China, to Istambul, to Prussia, in something like 250 pages. That was simply awesome!

I take inspirations from just about anything. Anime, books, movies, well Temeraire off course.
But as you migtht be able to see I mostly write Legend of Spyro Fan fiction. Currently have over 100 chapters set in that universe continuing teh story of the last game Dawn of the Dragon which left a deep impression on me (dont ask me why, i dont know myself )
But i also do a bit of original writing and some Legend of Zelda fan fictions (also a great fandom of mine)

S7alker117 In reply to Triforce-Dragon [2011-02-11 19:46:30 +0000 UTC]
I see.
My main inspiration is, and I think it always will be, the old sci-fi tales, like the ones by Arthur C Clarke and Issac Asimov, althoug I usually like my stories ponctuated by a few battle scenes here and there
Of course, and very much like you, I also draw inspiration from aniem, games and movies, but its always to the old sci-fi writers that I go to ask for guidance. Really loved the way how they were able to create such sense f wodner from seamingly simple things.
What brings me to other great inspiration, albeit a not literary one: Miyazaki. I love his films, they're simply magical. Again, the way he can create such wonder witch simple stories never ceases to amaze me

Yay!!!
Princess Mononoke is also my favourite. It feels like a complete movie. I dont know how to describe it any other way.
I'm actaully trying to use the lessons I learned from Miyazaki in ym storytelling. Lets see how that ends up
Oh, and how do you work your stories, BTW? I try to convein a equilibrium bettween storytelling and world-building and characters. Thats because I like to create characters as much as I like to create worlds
Oh, and a few cool links for writers:

I dont really have a style id say. I usualy get the idea for a story and then work along my general idea on chapter to chapter basis.
Writing is a hobby for me, though i am considering a career within it. I feel I am getting alot better, but i also know i have far to go.
One thing i love however is taking a well known story and put twist on it and that reflects in alot of my writing if i may say so.
An example could be the character Demetrius (owned by Begorle01 by the way) who really inspired me. In Begorle01 stories Demetrius is a Black Dragon and the villian. In BegorleΒ΄s stories Demetrius was once the mate of Cynder a main character from the Legend of Spyro games, back when Cynder was evil.
I liked the idea, but i wanted to take it a step futher and so i borrowed Demetrius (with permission) and included him in my own stories. In my stories his role is much the same except for one critical thing. He truly loves Cynder, really like in give his life love and Cynder at least once felt the same way towards him, even if she has turned away from her past. I played around with this idea of having the Villian and one of the main characters genuinly love each other, even if Cynder tries to deny it.
This entire setup is what i have been running on for my last many chapters, but i am aproaching the end of it now.

Wow!!!
Really a big saga you have there!!
I've also tried to make a big fanfic, an Halo-based one, but I give up, for now, for lack of time, and to give mor time to my own projects. Still write short fanfics about other stuff, though

Triforce-Dragon In reply to S7alker117 [2011-02-11 22:50:11 +0000 UTC]
My Legend of Spyro fan fic is my main project, it was wht got me started in teh first place. I already had some experience with creating stories from my time as a D&D Dungeon Master and with the lack of more games in the series I took up the pen to create my own version.
I had never dreamed I would make it this far, but I have a goal now. I will continue writing until I run out of ideas and then my stories will end with the two main characters death. I dont hide that fact at all, my fan fic is basicly my tale of their life. But it is still far of, at least twice my current number of chapters if inspiration holds
But I also need t divert my mind every once in a while and so I do short stories and Legend of Zelda fan fics mostly. I also have a running original story, but I am stuck in it at the moment...

Ah, I see!
When I was younger I also worked on a lot of fanfics. Made a full one based on BattleTech, but is was rather weak
Now I'm working in my big project, but writing short tales here and there to try something different and divert my mind is always an option

Very nice work. I like what you've done with the sun, setting it to Temeraire's right rear. It brings the background out more while not enough to draw attention away from Temeraire himself. Very professionally executed.

BIIIIG dragon. I love the picture though. It very well made and nicely thought out. Colors and composition are fantastic. I like the subtle spot design on the dragon's wings. Buildings look great too and they fit into the whole picture.
I do spot something missing, Shadows? Generally in the afternoon there are long shadows, and I don't see ANY shadows, unless I'm missing them.

Chromamancer In reply to Adreos [2010-09-10 01:03:19 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you found this one inspiring!
The dragon is described as having those blueish spots on the wings, so I definitely wanted to include them. The wings were quite fun to draw, overall.
You are correct. I don't think I included and specific shadows in this one. Looking at it now, I think adding them in may give things a bit more of a cluttered look, but it is definitely an area that I can improve on, in the future. Thanks for pointing that out.
