Description
This is what I've been working on lately. A while back, I decided to use one of the backgrounds from my quick sketches, and turn it into a piece of fanart.I was having some difficulty making a sketch that I found satisfying, and I was searching for some new fantasy novels to read. I found out about Temeraire from the contest, and those books really hit the spot.
Lawrence is in there, too. If you can find him. I tried to size him appropriately.
The color scheme is one of my favorites, but it is one I have used before. The bright warm and cool colors looked much better on this picture than earthy tones. I'll have to make another one that uses those colors soon. Maybe I'll do some more speedpaints for a while.
There might be one more piece of fanart coming, too.
Buildings are one of my weak areas, but I think they turned out decently well in this one. I tried to use a bit more perspective and straighter lines. Comments and criticism are always welcome.
Edit: Improved building textures, using a brick texture from [link]

Ah, wow I say you've got building down really well!
Those gorgeous evening colors, that bright yellow light, and the wide wings of the dragon back there (and its spotted wings!) all painted on so beautifully Great use of texture on those bricks too.
If I may suggest- I think the water down those rocks would look clearer if there was some ripple effect on them.
Other than that, very wonderful scene!

Thank you. It's especially good to hear that the building turned out well.
That's a good idea. I'll have to retouch the water later. I think it would look better with a few ripples too, now that you've pointed it out. I might add a few more details in the foreground, too.

awesome work
i love the hard light you put on it
the transparency of the wing are incredible
may i mention that you can put more detail in front plane like the road or the trees

That's a good piece of advice. Details often give me trouble because sometimes I put a lot of detail into areas that distract from the main focus. Adding more detail to the foreground possibly wouldn't hurt, because it is a bit darker and has some lower contrast, so it wouldn't be distracting. I might have to make that retouch sometime. Thank you for the feedback.

What's the novel about? I've heard the dragon's name a lot but I don't really know anything about the book, is it interesting?

It's a series of novels, actually. There are seven so far, but I've only read the first three.
They fit in the realm of historical fiction, and are set during the Napoleonic wars... but with dragons. That can talk.
The general concept seems a bit strange at first, but it works out much better than I thought it would. The characters and settings so far have been well written, too. The culture of the various locations that Temeraire and Lawrence visit stands out, as well.
I've been looking for a new fantasy series to read, and this one has been rather fun so far.
I'll probably pick up a few more books in the series soon.

I love original concepts, no matter how weird they may seem, so I guess I'd love the serie. I'll see if I can get the first book!
Thanks for the info

Just beautiful!
I think Temeraire looks big enough but does anyone know how many people he could fit on his back? It was some number that was hard to wrap one's head around...

Thank you.
I don't remember how large his crew was off the top of my head. It was around a dozen or so... if I remember correctly, though. It was a surprisingly large number. According to the descriptions, I think Temeraire is quite a bit larger than most fictional dragons.

Temeraire was able to carry at least a hundred passengers with the chinese carrying harnesses in addition to a thinned-out crew of thirty-ish, and Maximus held a crew of about fifty as his typical compliment. I can tell such a number on the dear celestial here would look quite crowded, but easily manageable. Needless to say, it is as close to the perfect size I have seen.
Beeg dagrum is beeg.

I'm quite glad to hear that his size looks good, there. I possibly could have made him a bit larger even.
Temeraire is an epic dragon indeed.

Thank you.
He does carry a decent number of people in his crew, so sometimes it is hard to get a feel for his size. He is a bit smaller than Maximus, but larger than most other dragons in that series, so I took my best guess.

Buildings.... are your weak point? *squints* Seriously, not that I can tell. Actually, if anything looks off, it's the thickness of Temeraire's forelegs compared to his chest.

Chromamancer In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2010-08-25 03:11:55 +0000 UTC]
Hmm... yeah... they do look a bit thick, now that I look at them again.
I've uploaded a minor edit that should improve that issue. I also added a bit more shading around his head, too.
Thanks for the feedback!
Buildings really do give me trouble, though. I usually end up with either a lack of detail, shaky likes, or bad perspective. I tried to avoid such issues in this picture, though. I think it's a bit of an improvement.
