Finished!I think most of you will see which one is the king.
I posted a WIP for this a while back, and I've been making changes to it since then. I decided to use the dragon, but add some more symmetric foreground elements, so the piece as a whole doesn't look off balance. I think the final composition turned out well. The converging lines in the background were especially fun to work with. Warm color schemes are addictive, too.
This piece was quite a lot of work.
I always want to make each piece of art I make better than my last ones, and one way I go about that is by putting some more time into the details.
This one went through several different revisions, but after spending so long on this picture, I think I'm in the mood for some quicker pieces next. This one had over 100 layers.
That may not be the pinnacle of efficiency, but at I am proud of the final result, so the time spent was worthwhile, in my opinion.

You're so smart at handling composition! The picture looks so much more balanced with the foreground props aiding the direction of the composition

Beautiful! The spectacle emphasises the nobility and greatness of the characters, not to mention the wast size and warm welcoming coulours of their envirnoment. All awesomely detailed, beautiful!

Horns are almost decorative themselves, so it seems like a natural place to put a few decorations.

Excellent work. 100 layers!?!?! I have trouble with ten! I hope the critique I gave was a fair one, that's the first time I've actually done one on here. I didn't mention the attention to detail because I didn't think it needed to be mentioned, it's great here, I keep noticing new things. I love that in an art piece.
Not to mention this is like, my favorite theme for a dragon to be placed in. It works really well and I had no idea this was going to be how that WIP turned out.

The critique was quite helpful, as well. I'll probably write up a separate reply for that, too, but it does make me want to try out some more varied color schemes. I'll have to find the right piece for them, though. I usually cycle through several different ones before uploading, and I felt this was the one that had the most impact.
100 layers isn't necessarily a good sign, though.
I tend to go overboard on them. Every time I need to make a major change or add something to the picture, I make a new layer.
Some of the pieces I make look very different in the WIP stages. In general, I think it's best to go with the flow a bit, and improve things however I can, even if it means changing the picture.

If you really wanted to challenge yourself, you could make a mental note to use only three layers until you add the finishing effects. I tend to want to keep every layer but having a gameplan for which layers you need to have and which you don't helps for me. Or if you wanna go nuts, use just one. It's really interesting how it will completely modify your style by taking away your technique.
