Finished!I think most of you will see which one is the king.
I posted a WIP for this a while back, and I've been making changes to it since then. I decided to use the dragon, but add some more symmetric foreground elements, so the piece as a whole doesn't look off balance. I think the final composition turned out well. The converging lines in the background were especially fun to work with. Warm color schemes are addictive, too.
This piece was quite a lot of work.
I always want to make each piece of art I make better than my last ones, and one way I go about that is by putting some more time into the details.
This one went through several different revisions, but after spending so long on this picture, I think I'm in the mood for some quicker pieces next. This one had over 100 layers.
That may not be the pinnacle of efficiency, but at I am proud of the final result, so the time spent was worthwhile, in my opinion.

O.O I just fell into a deep pit of awe. The foreground symmetry offsets the background in such a positive way! The whole thing is greatly balanced. I think that foolish little biped should get his butt of the Sovereigns pedestal.

Balancing out the background, with the asymmetrical pose on the dragon was rather difficult. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy my solution with the foreground symmetry.
Overall, the composition was rather fun to work with on this piece.

So far, this one has topped the rest. The flow of the piece is seamless! The colors blend very well, anatomy superb! And I have to admit that your patience knows no bounds! I haven't tried any of the WotC art tests yet, but I've always admired the art that goes into M:tG. I hope to do some art for them, eventually.
I am working on another project, in the mean time, though...
There will definitely be a journal post when that finishes up.

I tried to include plenty of detail.
The lighting wasn't all that difficult. I work in greyscale before adding color, and it's much easier to focus on the lighting and value balance at that point.
Then, I can focus on lighting and color separately.

I can see how working in greyscale would make that much easier. I never thought to work on a piece that way.
