Finished!I think most of you will see which one is the king.
I posted a WIP for this a while back, and I've been making changes to it since then. I decided to use the dragon, but add some more symmetric foreground elements, so the piece as a whole doesn't look off balance. I think the final composition turned out well. The converging lines in the background were especially fun to work with. Warm color schemes are addictive, too.
This piece was quite a lot of work.
I always want to make each piece of art I make better than my last ones, and one way I go about that is by putting some more time into the details.
This one went through several different revisions, but after spending so long on this picture, I think I'm in the mood for some quicker pieces next. This one had over 100 layers.
That may not be the pinnacle of efficiency, but at I am proud of the final result, so the time spent was worthwhile, in my opinion.

Wow. I really don't have too much to say about this one, I think it's extraordinarily well executed, but I must agree with the critique by Nathlin about contrast. Overall, I think this piece is your best yet

I tried a few different color schemes, and I think greater differentiation between the red, silver, and orange tones makes it look less unified. Using the limited palette in this one increased the impact, in my opinion. It is definitely a helpful critique.
It has been a while since I tried a picture will a less limited color palette, though.
I'll have to practice with that some more...

Well, you could always try to art in a different way.
For instance, I'm trying a few different painting techniques right now.
Trying new things helps keep the process fresh and interesting, I think.

I got tired on my last major digital painting which had 16........ O.O

Well, part of that is because I start a new layer whenever I need to make a major change to something. I really could be better at merging them together, though.
If something doesn't work well, I just re-draw parts of the picture until things fit together better. I'd rather do that, than waste the potential in that background, for instance.

Holy s**t that scene is familiar. You ever read Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik? Check out page 259. In that book the dragon was the king (Mokhachane) and the man at the throne (Moshueshue) was next in line, and furthermore he dragon had a golden-bronze hide and amber eyes.
Similarity or not, that is an amazing and powerful piece of work, and worth every one of those 100 layers.

I have that book, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I've only read the first three Temeraire ones so far...
They're really good, though. I definitely have to read up on the rest of the series. I'll look forward to that scene.
