Description Sometimes I hate coming up with titles...
Anyway, this is another piece for that calendar project. I don't think I've ever tried drawing a snowy scene before, even though I tend to enjoy snow quite a bit.

So, I looked up a bunch of references of snowy landscapes and mountains, and tried to use what I learned to make some art.

I lightened up the dragon a little, too. Hopefully it looks like a very light blue or white dragon. White and black tend to be difficult for me, so this piece was a lot of fun in that respect, as well.

Comments and criticism welcome, like always.
Now, I just need to find some time to finish all the other promising sketches I have set aside...

Despite this being your first time with a snowy scene, you did quite well! Congratulations! And the dragon came out well too

Thank you.
I had to look up many landscape references this time around. I think they definitely helped make things a little easier.

Bravo! You know I love it The background was stunning from the beginning (and is probably still tied for my favourite part) Colouring on the dragon isn't short of spectacular and the warm, bright eye is just dazzling. I love how you manage to fit so much texture into the body pattern and scales. The matching white spikes nicely help to balance the dragon into a creature who would be believable to see.. if that makes sense.

Overall very nice human... I would like to see more variation in the human expressions that you make as your dragons' partners. But perhaps they just all have the same kind of dumb-struck look that I'm sure I have when gazing at such beautiful scenery such as in your backgrounds. Not sure what, but you could try some more unique ways that a dragon may be bonded to a human (anxiety, elation, fear, jealousy.. etc) Just an idea.

Hm... the many lines that create the wings for this guy look much better coloured, but there still seems to be so many lines that somewhat take away from the realistic-ness. I'm really not sure how that could be helped with the wings folded like that… but I know you were working on them quite a bit, so I think it turned out rather well for a challenging pose.

So overall, good job! (of course) I'm going to have to get a bigger monitor so I can view your full size pictures all at once.

Thanks for the awesome comment.
I think learning a bit more about how to use textures as been rather helpful. Now that I'm getting used to them, texture is like another layer of detail that I was previously missing. I did most of it with one brush and a bit of smudging, actually.

That is another great idea, about the variety of expressions. I tend to try to make impressive scenery, and I think that expression mostly comes from my own assumptions about how I would react in that situation...
But, using a greater variety of expressions and situations seems like another thing that kind of... slips my mind sometimes. Perhaps practicing with those will be even more revolutionary than learning how to use textures.
I know I want to try many more scenes now.

I'm glad to hear that the wings have improved since that WIP, as well. The angle that they're at did make things rather difficult for a while. Now that I look at the lines more closely, I think the main problem with them is that they are not balanced out by anything else, and they don't fit in at all with the more circular parts of the composition.

You're welcome. When I put a lot of thought into comments, it seems to make people happy, and that makes me happy!

I have definitely noticed the "new addition" of texture in your recent pics, especially on the dragons (you were always good at metal, though) and it does add another layer of awesomeness and the feeling of "reaching out and touching" or stepping into the picture.

Different expressions is something to try.. human faces & expressions are so complex and I imagine incredibly challenging. So good luck! It will be very interesting to see what happens.

Both the dragon and the background are amazing.
Sorry, no crit from me. Admittedly, it's really the dragon's head and those epic mountains + northern night sky that makes me like this so much.

I had a lot of fun with the details on this one. I used more than a few layers to get the shading on the dragon's head right.

The scales look awsome Like everything else XD. Although in my opinion the nose of the human is a bit too high? But the dragon is the center of attention anyway
The whole thing looks so awsome.

Thank you. I'm glad you like it!

The nose might be a bit high... The human is a bit more stylized than the rest of the picture, in some ways. I have a tough time drawing people realistically sometimes, and I thought this would be a good way to handle the details, when things are zoomed out.
I might have to practice on that a bit.

Thank you for pointing it out.

Pretty blue lines <3
Ah, I have to say- I get a strong sense of shadowing from how big the dragon is, so the huge purple-blue shadows on it work out well, especially with how the snowy surroundings suggest a lot of cool colour action
I did get the impression the dragon was white though! The far away mountains are sooo gorgeous, they look so real!

It looks snowy with a dash of starry, love that feel!

It's good to know that the white color scheme worked out. I tried to base the color scheme of the picture generally around blue, but added in some slight purple and green hues for a bit more contrast.

I think I'll have to try snowy scenes more often.

why are there leather straps on the dragon's claws?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Skythe-Soulblade [2010-12-12 02:33:02 +0000 UTC]

Mainly because I thought the dragon needed some equipment other than the saddle, and adding something to the claws balances out the picture well.

I thought about adding a few armor plates, and other decorations to the dragon, but I ended up just going with those straps.
