Description
Sometimes I hate coming up with titles...Anyway, this is another piece for that calendar project. I don't think I've ever tried drawing a snowy scene before, even though I tend to enjoy snow quite a bit.
So, I looked up a bunch of references of snowy landscapes and mountains, and tried to use what I learned to make some art.
I lightened up the dragon a little, too. Hopefully it looks like a very light blue or white dragon. White and black tend to be difficult for me, so this piece was a lot of fun in that respect, as well.
Comments and criticism welcome, like always.
Now, I just need to find some time to finish all the other promising sketches I have set aside...

I really love how the dragon's skin turned out.
The snow and mountains turne out pretty good, and the coloring of the sky is... well, really wonderful.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy this one.
I had to use a few layers to get the shading on the skin just right, but I'm rather happy with how that turned out, too.

I really like this, I think you made to mountains and sky very realistic, like the dragon is actually up on mount everest. I think that the dragon looks a bit on the gray-blue side, but personally I think that looks good, like he is supposed to live in the gray slate mountains
Very very nice, as usual :]

Chromamancer In reply to persian-pirate [2010-12-12 11:59:21 +0000 UTC]
Yep.
I do all the shading in black and white, then add color later. This lets me change the color scheme of a picture rather quickly, without changing other aspects of the lighting.
So, whenever I'm getting ready to upload something, I try several different color schemes, so I can try and find the one I like best.
It can be a tough decision sometimes, for me as well.

*Favs*
Another brilliant piece. The shading is a particular standout here, functioning as both a detail and an eye director, which makes the eye focus on the main event first and drink in the rest of the piece from there. I love the sense of personality that is given to the dragon, and the design that aids in that (I'm thrilled when I see an artist make effective use of pupils for dragon eyes ). Overall, fantastic! (And I wrote all this before clicking the full size option, whereupon my eyes almost teared up from the awesomeness).
There's only one complaint I have, and this is rather hard to nail down. For the first several seconds looking at this piece, the dragon looked like a wyvern to me, with the front legs acting as a wyvern's only two legs in my mind. That illusion was broken once I noticed the back leg at the far left of the picture. Like I said, I'm not entirely sure what caused my mind to view it as such initially, though my guess is that it may have been due to the posture, the curve of the back, or... hmm, I just realized it's hard for me to discern where the wing and the back begin or end near the right wing region. I finally figured out the shape of the wing, but there's something that seems "off" about the area where it seems the wing is connecting to the body, and I can't quite figure out what.
But, again, this is a fantastic piece overall! Don't forget that.
By the way, calendar project? Is it a personal project, or collaborative? Haven't heard of it yet.

Thank you. I'm glad you like it.
I tried to use things like contrast and color to draw attention to certain parts of the picture, in this one. Sometimes a little extra detail can really go a long way, especially when the eyes are involved.
I sketched out several different dragon poses, and this one seemed the most interesting. When I tried to fully include that back leg, it tended to look much more forced. Now that I think about it again, making everything in the foreground a little smaller would have left more space dedicated to the background, and I could have included some more detail on the rear legs...
As for the wing... I think I found the issue. I intended it to be something related to perspective, but if you measure from the shoulder to the wing joint, and back up to the front of the wing, it looks like the wings are different sizes. That could be a much more distracting issue. I'll have to take a look and try to fix things up. With all the layers, it may be a rather difficult fix, though.
That will definitely be something to avoid in the future.
Thank you for pointing those things out.
The calendar project I mentioned is just a personal project. I've seen some fantasy and dragon calendars around, even when walking through the mall, and I thought "I wonder if I could make something like that..."
So, I thought I'd give it a shot.
I've drawn many of my latest pictures in 11 by 17 aspect ratio, so I could have a consistent format for that project.
