Description Started out as something to work on between my calendar art because even I get bored of just drawing scenery over and over again. So I have been working on and off this for the past couple of weeks so I'm surprised that I'm actually content with what the final result came out like. Not totally as I envisioned but close enough and I've spent enough time on it.

Just a long-haired bishie and a lot of pretty purple stuff, mainly the girls will only like it but I'm sure some guys will too drawn in Photoshop alone, no 3D or photo-manips used, as usual in my character art. My reference was a Ball-Jointed Doll here [link] I'm glad those things are so popular, I'm finding them good reference models and inspire me to make pretty characters...it's win-win

Also my first semi-realism attempt I feel might be good enough for a print, so why not - it's costing me nothing

All artwork in my gallery remains my own copyrighted work and is not to be re-submitted, edited or not on any other account or site without my permission

You're capable of doing really epic pieces
How'd you do all that texture? I always see it in arts of those China artists Clothing texture. It's very prominent in their works!

Fave for the effort and encouragement to continue this sort of thing!

Lol "those China artists" that was exactly my inspiration, I don't mean to brag but I have never met an Australian artist (without and Asian background) who does this sort of stuff so well, I'm hoping to be the first that can replicate the beautiful ornamental bishies like the Chinese artists do

I looked at a few difference references of real kimono patterns to get an idea of what patterns I would like. I drew a few designs on seperate layers and just duplicated them heaps of times warping each individual to fit the folds of the clothing...as you can imagine, it took hours

Thanks for faving too, I can't gurantee I would do this all the time, but this certainly wont be the last

Lol, well I owe the composition to my reference picture as far as the pose/angle goes. Still, other features like the clumps of hair, flowers and even patterns on his clothes were strategically-placed

Yeah, still toe-dipping into this popular yet surprisingly difficult genre of art

Vividly vibrant violet and his skin tone is the perfect foil to the theme.

The positioning of his necklaces add a subtle touch of gravity and weight to the image, so we know he's not just out in a particularly breezy day.

You speak of "taking a couple of hours" to complete hair and clothing, and I have no doubt in my own attempt we would be speaking of days if not weeks...

Thanks! I have a tendancy to often draw my characters a little too tanned, here he's almost twice as pale as he was after I first shaded him thanks to some last-minute colour/brightness adjustments I felt the pale and more pink-ish skin tone fitted the surrounding colours better, glad to hear it did thanks for noticing the alignment of the necklaces too, yep - he's lying on the ground

Hey, some people I watch do something as good as this whole thing in one session. There will always be someone faster at it

Argh, I can't draw long hair well; looks like you did what I can't.

It's nice but, probably it could be my computer screen's problem, the picture seems a bit dark?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to MisterScourge [2009-10-12 12:48:49 +0000 UTC]

Long hair is very hard, even for me. I must have spent at least a few hours on the hair alone

Is your computer and older model? I use Windows Vista and that, along with many newer computers has those screens that can sometimes be deceiving in colours when viewed from certain angles...there's a chance I was tricked into thinking it was lighter than I thought. Sometimes I do think my art looks darker and more saturated on older PC's

Holy sh-- you have to make a tutorial for this. How can you paint such a realism pattern on the clothes?? I'm so curious...I can't do that -_-"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to futarinokizuna [2009-10-12 10:58:05 +0000 UTC]

Eh, there's nothing I could write for a tutorial that hasn't already been said. Well, maybe not just for those patterns, I did draw them flat and on seperate layers and I duplicated them, warped them to fit the contours of his clothes and repeated the process with different patterns, slowly covering the whole area and erasing parts that appeared where they shouldn't. I think I set the blending mode for the patterns layer to "overlay" or something like that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

futarinokizuna In reply to Chromattix [2009-10-13 16:13:36 +0000 UTC]

sometimes if I set overlay mode , it gets too bright or the colour isn't as I wished , so I hardly ever used that 'overlay'. But wow , guess I'll try some later

Chromattix In reply to futarinokizuna [2009-10-14 04:34:01 +0000 UTC]

Chromattix In reply to Diamond-Thing [2009-10-12 10:31:16 +0000 UTC]

Many would say just practice a lot, but that's just half the battle - a lot comes to observational skills and your'e own motivation to continue, even if the drawing feels like it's going nowhere (like this did throughout most of it )

keelerleah In reply to ??? [2009-10-12 08:22:03 +0000 UTC]

I think you did a fabulous job! The colors are just gorgeous and the details are amazing! I really love how realistic the lovely flowers turned out and the patterning on the clothing is a wonderful touch.

One bit of critique though (if you want it). To me the nose and lips seem just a bit off center and crooked. It might just be the angle, but to me, it might help if you shifted those features a bit to the right. It might just be my eyes playing tricks on me (as I am bushed at the moment) but that's what catches my eyes when I look at it.

Either way, it turned out simply gorgeous. I always love to see when artists paint something different then their usual 'themes' and it truly shows talent when they can succeed that well in something they don't normally paint. Keep up the wonderful work!

Oh as well, and I had to comment on the bjd reference. *pokes my own who are sitting on my bed at the moment*. They can be wonderful to use as stock references (especially the poses) however I occasionally find that using photos of their faces for reference doesn't work all that well. I honestly don't know why, and that's just from my own personal experiences... but I thought I'd mention it.

Pew, sorry for the long winded comment. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see your callendar!!

Chromattix In reply to keelerleah [2009-10-12 10:27:27 +0000 UTC]

I surprised myself on the flowers actually, while I can draw them - it's been a while and I was able to do them relativly quick (between you and me, there's only three uniquely-drawn ones and a lot of duplicates )

When you say the nose and lips, do you mean their actual position on the face or the angle of which they are drawn if the latter, it's because I wanted the head to be slightly tilted to his right, and with one eye partially covered, his nose and lips were all I had to show that half-inch offset if their actual positions fixed to the face aren't correct, then that's a new problem for me to look into

I think BJD's don't make good face references since their faces are kinda plain (but I think they look nicer that way) and show little expression. That wasn't so much an issue here since I did want a kind of vacant look, but if I decide to do something more expressive - I'll need a different model

Thanks for commenting

keelerleah In reply to Chromattix [2009-10-12 20:10:40 +0000 UTC]

I've done the duplicate thing a lot too (especially with hand painted leaves on trees etc. It looks alright if they are resized and flipped around enough. ^^

For the mouth and lips its a bit of both; position and angle. Just rotate the bottom portion of the nose and mouth just a BIT then shift it upwards (towards the right). However, it might just be the angle of the head that's causing my eyes to play tricks on me. Although I did notice, by reading some of the other comments, that I'm not the only one noticing that.

Here is a trick that might work for spotting small errors that you might find helpful for faces: When you think a work is done flip the whole thing horizontally. It completely gives you a different sense of the picture and you'll find that mistakes that weren't noticeable before just jump out at you. Personally, I don't do this trick as often as I should, but the times I have its really made a big difference.

But like I said, you really did an amazing job on this picture, and you should be very proud of it. I really hope you didn't mind the bit of critique either. I know some artists don't like it (me for one) and you've always been so nice about not doing that for my works (which I do appreciate). Anyways, keep up the great work!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to keelerleah [2009-10-13 00:05:12 +0000 UTC]

Lol, well with critique, it's one of those things I still allow but don't promote. Just to stop me from having everyone break it down, which can be as discouraging as it is helpful. What I do is if I'm not motivated enough to change a finished work, I'll keep what people said in mind for next time

I did flip this several times. and even worked on it one way about a third of the time as opposed to this "normal" way here. I probably just havn't had enough face practice yet

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

keelerleah In reply to Chromattix [2009-10-13 00:44:49 +0000 UTC]

Well as I've said a bazillion times (to just people in general) practice makes perfect, especially with faces. I've done plenty over the last few years and even so I have so many that just don't turn out right. It simply happens to everyone at times. But like I said this painting of yours did turn out wonderful and everything (including the face) is simply gorgeous. A lot of people could only wish they had your talent. Keep up the great work my friend!
