Description
The nearest and smallest Moon of a large Earth-like world has been inching ever closer each year, disaster is inevitable. Probably struck by a comet and knocked out of orbit, or maybe interfered with by two larger Moons nearby are likely reasons for such an even to happen...On approach, anyone or anything viewing from the ground notices a growing disk blocking out the Sunlight, darkening skies, and magnetically-influenced aurora's and lightning appearing in the most unlikely areas, their flash of colour illuminating just what exactly is about to come crashing down. The ground shakes due to gravitational stress acted upon it, and storm cells in the atmosphere go haywire as they move above turbulent seas, their world will end before the main event even happens...the impact!
Well heres my successful entry to 's first artpack they have made ever since I was finally good enough to stand a chance lol.
Can you beleive that the "base" render for the storm clouds in the blue planet about to be hit was done in Vue? yep...clever use of terrains right there, thats all I will say
Wallpapers of this and some other cool space-themed art can be found at TerraSpace's Moons pack ...I won't be putting WP's here, but print is available.

Scary perhaps, but it's not like anything of the kind is set to happen here, when I was a kid I used to be so paranoid about it though but now I see how unlikely it is The whole planet seems to show no land anyway, it could be flooded already

o Ao But there's so much cloud in the way though you may be right. It does look very watery and blue.
xD I'm still paranoid of something like that happening. Though it's not a moon that scares me, but large rogue rocks in space. That and black homes o 3o

You would probabaly have to be much closer to the smaller planet in that case

Generally, I only visit DA for photography, but I must say, your work is quite impressive. I love this image.
I just heard that there's some crazy meteorite headed this way that should be hear in like 20-25 years. Your image could have much deeper meaning then....if we don't manage to divert or destroy the meteor before then.
Anyways, great work, wonderful gallery.

Thanks, sometimes I'm amazed at the stuff I find myself commenting and faving, lucky accidental find sthat I wouldn't have activly looked for myself
Some say Nibiru, a stray small planet will be responsible for the end of the world in 2012, while such an event is possible, I find it a little hard to believe it will happen so soon, as for your theory, we'll have to wait and see in the next 20 or 25 years
Thanks for faving too

I'm only 31, but I'm hoping that I live that long. Hee hee.
My theory on 2012? If you're interested?
Our current calendars run on a 12 month cycle and therefore end once a year. I think that they Mayan (is it?) calendar that seems to be fueling the whole 2012 thing is the same situation. I imagine them creating it and saying "Ok, 2012 is far enough into the future. Let's just stop there and make a new one when the time comes" Or, something like that.

That's what I think too did they really expect to even live to 2012 in the first place?
far enough indeed (but one would think it would have been more practical to finish at 2000
)

Good point. Funny math I guess. Cultural differences I imagine. Ha ha.
I must say, we're certainly more well equipped to ward off would-be space attacks than we were 20 years ago.

I knew the Moon was really far from an early age but only because I read up on this stuff, otherwise I would have thought that maybe if you jump out of a plane at night you could quickly grab onto it

Thanks! believe it or not, the large flat-topped storm clouds were actually groupings of Vue terrains I painted over, I often find them good base material for when I need sharply-detailed and unusually-shaped clouds

I am suprised i didnt come across this sooner, it is a beautifully done piece, especially with all the lightning and atmospheric effects. Thats something i particularly like. I also like how the piece has a Grim sort of tone to it, a little like what i got from Majoras mask when the timer was running out. I get that same sort of feeling from this.
Nice work!

That's why I rotate my "featured deviation" each month, showcasing an older one most people would have missed I loe illustarting atmospheric phenomenon too, it's actually my first interest before everything else (including space) came around
I never played Majora's Mask, I was too sucky and impatient with the first Zelda on the N64 you can imagine how cool it would look on today's graphics though, a bit like this - only the moon has a face

Just wondering was there a specific triggeer that helped you get started with some of these Atmospheric techniques? It intrigues me ^^, i would like to do some more Space and sky scenes for when my current F-Zero VX project passes the "character and machines" stage, then i need to design more environments.
Oh MAI. I could so imagine that, god that would be some scary stuff!

Well it's easy to learn how to draw something faster than normal if your'e intereste din it, and space and weather has been a long-term interest in mine, since I can even recognize certain formations or events that take place during certain weather to make it more convincing
I Remember F-Zero X on the N64, great game the one on the GameCube was way too hard though
I do have a Mute City peice though if it gives ya any inspiration

Hmm, a bit of Geography comes in with that then! I did that a few years ago in my studies but now i have moved onto Media so i will try remember some of the Formations when it comes to making some scenes. It would be cool to Recreate the Venue "Lightning" if possible .
That Mute City Piece is how i found you in the first place, it was so amazing to see such a detailed piece of F-Zero work! Ever thought about doing a different venue?

Or perhaps the super-advanced sentient race living on the planet will activate their planetary shield that neutralises the gravitational pull of the moon and the moon will crash into the forcefield and they will be saved.
...But you know, I'm just guessing.

A magnificent piece of work! You've really captured the grandeur of such an event and made it look plausible too. Thanks also for the hint on how that realistic atmosphere was created. I'd been wondering how to create the 'Anvil' headed storm clouds but for view from the ground plane upwards on a micro scale compared to the near planetary view depicted here. I guess that is going to be my next Vue cloud project.

Thanks for looking at some of my older works I got lots of critique from pros on this before I submitted it, it wasn't nearly as dynamic when I first completed it, before they made me do it again
Yeah, each main cloud is one normal mountain-like terrain with the "stones" effect used, followed by eroding it a bit to give it a smooth, yet lumpy look (more like those sharp-edged thunderclouds) and the "anvil" is a symmetrical terrain that is kinda flat, placed on top...All terrains had a white material that was a bit luminous because the shadows were too dark, but they did come out looking a bit like packing foam, so digitally painting over it in Photoshop, and smudging it too helped make it more cloud-like

Ur welcome and you had good teachers indeed! Because it was your work that helped me persuade me to take the plunge on Vue I tend to use you as the first point of reference when trying to decide what is feasible or not. Hope you don't mind? Thanks for the further info on the use of terrains to create the atmosphere, very helpful and logical when you think about it. However when I first saw the image the impression was that you'd used some NASA stock photography. Then I read the comments and was delighted and enlightened!

No problem...I will be happy to give you some critique from time to time on your Vue scenes. Just note me about it if something in a deviation dosn't look right
Though I used some NASA images here, I'm against using an entire Earth-closeup scene since it seems kinda lazy, which is why that was mostly done in Vue 6

Thank you, and much appreciated! I collect photo images for reference, especially of mountain scenes and skyscapes seen on dA and on my Flikr account too; they can be very helpful in setting the scene for a piece of work. However, photomontage is a different kind of artform which for me seems out of place at this time of learning Vue. J.
