Description
The nearest and smallest Moon of a large Earth-like world has been inching ever closer each year, disaster is inevitable. Probably struck by a comet and knocked out of orbit, or maybe interfered with by two larger Moons nearby are likely reasons for such an even to happen...On approach, anyone or anything viewing from the ground notices a growing disk blocking out the Sunlight, darkening skies, and magnetically-influenced aurora's and lightning appearing in the most unlikely areas, their flash of colour illuminating just what exactly is about to come crashing down. The ground shakes due to gravitational stress acted upon it, and storm cells in the atmosphere go haywire as they move above turbulent seas, their world will end before the main event even happens...the impact!
Well heres my successful entry to 's first artpack they have made ever since I was finally good enough to stand a chance lol.
Can you beleive that the "base" render for the storm clouds in the blue planet about to be hit was done in Vue? yep...clever use of terrains right there, thats all I will say
Wallpapers of this and some other cool space-themed art can be found at TerraSpace's Moons pack ...I won't be putting WP's here, but print is available.

You're welcome... I can really see the effort you've put into it. It's in my top 3 of your works. Critique is good as long as it's the constructive kind. Would I be asking too much if I asked for this as a wallpaper too? And if that wasn't enough, I (if possible) seriously love all four of the "sinking satellite progression" images too.. so if that's not too much trouble I'll take all them too... I'm only being half serious here - I'd like them but I suspect that's involve a lot of work on your part if they are even possible. So... yeah.
Marvelous stuff though.

They should have wallpapers downloadable at ~TerraSpace itself, they have a "Moons' art pack that has mine, and other's brilliant work in wallpaper formats. The four images in the progression are gone now since I didn't need them anymore after putting thumbnails in that list, so I'm afraid you couldn't possibly get larger versions of those

Awwwwwww...... that is seriously too bad.
They should, but the don't. They do have a moons pack like you said - but it's all of them blended together and not accessible as single images that could be set as desktop. You know, in a .swf format file. Can you help me out?

I don't know anything about swf files...I always thought they had a wallpaper pack with it. But I guess it was just for display purposes

Here, look for yourself - [link] ...
.swf files are kind of like .exe files that run automatically in your browser. There is no way to 'get' single images out of them. At least that I'm aware of.
Yes, they are commonly used for things like "display purposes" - as they allow greater control over the information within them.
So then, would you be able to rustle up the image yourself? It's not urgent - as I'm already using the ones you've "leased" me... and I'm going on holidays tomorrow... it'd just be nice to get it sorted before I leave and all that... that's all.

I absolutally love the atmosphere on the planet. At first glance the moon is cool, but as i looked deeper i noticed the fine detail in the atmosphere =]

Thankyou, although the Moon falling is really the main theme of the peice, I still spent more time on the clouds and atmosphere

I love this. This is actually happening to Triton, Neptune's moon. It's orbit is going the wrong way, so it's eventually going to crash into the planet.
Beautiful by and by.

Thanks, funny how for a space-artist, I never was crazy about Star Wars...but who knows, if they made a movie with such a scene like this, I'd probably go see it solely for that thanks for commenting and faving

I sure as hell wish they'd make movies with scenes like these... or games!
I need to start doing more stuff in photoshop; I have all the right equipment, just never the patience.. which is strange, because I had the patience to learn how to use 3ds max.

Lol, well I couldn't possibly tell you every detail with how I did it, I'll be here typing a whole novel lol. Basically, it was done using a mix of 2D and 3D digital programs...I made a 3D scene for the world below which helped speed things up by giving me a quick "base" to build up on later in Photoshop. The planets are also made in 3D, but a seperate file, and their surface texture mapped around them was made in Photoshop too, so there was a bit of jumping between the two, but there was more Photoshop work though

Keep up the incredible work mate! Always fun to look at what your going to have next. I think your always improving which is a good direction to go! Was this mostly painting then? Or did you render any of it? Sorry if i'm blind and missed it if you already mentioned it somewhere.

Chromattix In reply to Superiorgamer [2008-07-10 05:22:09 +0000 UTC]
There was a mix of painting and 3D work here, it could probably almost pass off as a Matte-painting because of the way I went about it ( I hope so, since I'm trying to get into that feild ) The main planet below was a Vue 6 render at first, taken from beyond the atmosphere in space above a series of clouds that make up the smaller ones scattered about, and some cleverly-used terrains which formed the "base" for the storm cells, which went through extreme postwork in Photoshop to get them to look more like clouds rather than chunks of styrofoam lol. The planet textures for the moons were done in photoshop too, but rendered onto 3D planets ( I know I could just use the "spherize" filter in PS, but making hem true 3D just gives them a more "solid" look to me ) and those planets were brought into postworking too

Superiorgamer In reply to Chromattix [2008-07-10 18:18:02 +0000 UTC]
Sounds awesome! I'm also not a huge fan of the "spherize" filter in photoshop either. Which program did you use to do the texture overlay?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to Superiorgamer [2008-07-11 00:31:02 +0000 UTC]
Texture overlay? you mean making the textures to apply to the 3D spheres right? well the texture maps were made fully in Photoshop, partly manipulated from textures, and partly manually painted too. Some parts of the closest moon were added after after the rendering of the 3D one, like the larger craters in some parts, which were manually painted completely

Well I always envied some skilled artists around here when I started out too, and in my attempt to live up to them, I just practiced hard and only recently started to live up to their level, I'm sure you will sometimes too. Your Terragen scenes show potential to be part of something bigger, and even your revamped emoticons should be usable too

Great image and view on this disaster.
This, I believe, has been a fear of the world for quite some time. It is, of course, a future possibility.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to ErilisVampyre [2008-07-09 01:27:38 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, but the world has no need to fear this event, in actual fact, the Moon is actually getting further away from Earth, at a few inches a year. Of course, in the newer "Time Machine" movie, it shows the possibility that a future moon-base could end up throwing the Moon out of orbit if a huge disaster happened, it could then fall to Earth
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ErilisVampyre In reply to Chromattix [2008-07-09 18:04:16 +0000 UTC]
Heh...now THAT would be interesting. Another reason to love the freakyness of the new "Time Machine", even though the older movie was much more freaky in its own way (always freaked me out) and the book even more so.
However...I think you're right. It's not the fate of this world for that to happen. Though...it does still affect the earth that the moon is moving further away.
It is also some speculation of just what would happen if some catastrophic event were to happen, like another planet or the moon being hit by an asteroid or things being just right in the universe and solar system to then make the earth tilt on is axis, of how that would effect the world.
Heh...fun and scary stuff to think about, eh?
