Description
A man-made Solar System, fully functional or just a hologram? - it's up to the viewerThis evolved significantly and is evidence on how gaining outside opinions really can improve an artwork. But the biggest help came from *SomniCelestia who suggested this steep and dynamic perspective...beforehand, my theme was still in the right place but the angle was straight-on and pretty boring. I think I need not only think outside the box when it comes to concept, but perspective too. I'll just have to see
All models made by me in Cinema 4D, imported to Vue where they were textured, lighted and rendered (blurred reflections made the base render take friggi'n 26 hours to render
P.S - in the off chance someone buys a print, it can potentially be hung upside-down too for a different perspective of the same scene

haha, thanks

you followed the perspective advice - it became a job well done
I like that bit in your comments when u said it can be hung upside down too LOL True.. (I did tilt my head to a silly angle though
)

Lol, indeed - my original perspective was straight on with the "sun" and was rather plain
Though I could flip it in Photoshop myself, after I uploaded it I just tilted my head too just to be sure

Great idea, nice colours, great perspective and great execution! Well done!
The only thing I'd change would be the paths of the planets. Make them vary on the z-axis as well.
Great job though!

Thanks! as for the planet paths, that odd-looking one was rotated about 30 degrees in the 3D scene to make it on a steep angle compared to the rest, but it kinda came out flat - which is odd for 3D art

Thanks for faving too

Yeah, sci-fi machinery normally isn't my strong point, even coming up with this was pshing my creativity to the limit and some parts frustrating glad you still like it though

Where are Mars, Saturn, and Uranus?
Why is Pluto occupying the same orbital path as Neptune (resulting in the outermost path being empty)?
Do these discrepancies really detract from the piece itself? I do not believe so; this work is excellent. I am sure there were practical reasons as to why some of the planets were omitted. Although, I must admit I still slightly cringe upon noticing two of the planets in the same orbit.
As previously mentioned, this work is still great and the little problems I have with it are merely the musings of a perfectionist.

Chromattix In reply to EngineOfEnd [2009-09-24 09:17:57 +0000 UTC]
Lol, no need to worry - this one isn't based off our own Solar System, otherwise it would be too crowded and the planets too far apart (and extreme in size-difference) for this limited space it's just a generalisation of one
Ahh crap, I must have accidently put the outer planet on the wrong path lucky no-one else noticed, I should leave it like that to see if anyone else does

Oh yeah! now that you mention it I remember being showed one of those ages ago, I think before I even started 3D actually while modelling the objects in some of those is within my range - I don't think I would ever be able to make such perfectly-timed animations like that

Thanks a lot I'm glad to have developed my own style over time, though it can potentially hinder my chances at industry jobs since I don't follow the same standards/trends as "typical" professional illustrators. But at least I know on a personal level that it's unique
Glad you like it

very cool image!
yes, the dramatic perspective adds a lot to the piece. ah, that's one of the beautiful things about working in 3d - just change the camera for a whole different look!

Chromattix In reply to ceruleanvii [2009-09-24 08:06:25 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! and yes - that's probably one of the main reasons I still do a lot in 3D, it's just a matter of changing the camera location for a new look, and I tend to move the camera around dozens of times during the process too and if often ends up a different angle than I originally imagined due to lucky-found "accidents"

Dude... That's insanely good!! Great details, perspective, colors, and lighting! I love the little asteroids floating and catching the light of the miniature sun! The machinery looks well crafted and real, also. And I think it's great that I can see all of the planets clearly, even though they're small. *sigh* Pluto's not considered a planet, anymore.

Chromattix In reply to FeelingVeryLucky [2009-09-24 07:55:26 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a lot, glad to hear all those things worked out visually I was pretty happy with the asteroids myself and yeah - I had to be careful with the planet sizing, making them as small as possible without losing them to try and keep things relativly to scale
Thanks for faving too yeah, Pluto is off the board now, it is pretty much just a spherical tail-less comet after all

cool concept love the colours The thing i like the most is the asteroid belt!! how did you do that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to Wetbanana [2009-09-24 07:50:46 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! the asteroid belt made clever use of Vue's ecosystem feature. I first made a disk witha hole in the middle in Cinema 4D (that only takes a few seconds) imported it to Vue with all the other machinery and gave the disc an invisible material and populated it with heaps of rocks in a flash...so essentially they are sitting on an invisible disc just one clever way to use the ecsystem feature to save needless amounts of handywork

Hmm, I've been wanting to make this for so long that I forget where I got the idea from, if it wern't for the theme of the art exhibition that forced it out of me, I probably would have held it for even longer some have mentioned Final Fantasy - but surprisingly I havn't played enough of it yet to encounter something like this

I didn't know I could either. Sci-fi machines and interiors normally aren't my thing, so doing them bother together was hard. A tutorial however would only be good for those few people that have, and use all three programs I used to make this though...was kinda tricky
