I heavily used inspiration for how to explain this with the work of Barbara Bradley. I high recommend you check out her book "Drawing people: how to portray the clothed figure" She actually goes into great detail into all aspects of anatomy and portraits in this.

I've always struggled with lips. I've really wanted to design characters that had unique faces, and lips were part of that, but getting them to look right has been such a challenge! Breaking them down into smaller shapes like you have is REALLY helpful, not to mention making consideration for the teeth. Thank you!!

The way you draw mouths is much easier than how I normally draw my own.
