...for the train (and season 4, too!).
I don't get all the hate for Flash Sentry (and yes, that is him, just in gray scale). Since I'm fairly new to the fandom, am I missing something? All he did was dance with and bump into Twilight in a non-canon movie, but eh. This fandom works in mysterious ways, I've observed.
And yes, this was inspired by Paperman. I can no longer count the times I've watched that short.

I don't care much for this pairing because I find Flash Sentry to be pretty bland but this is just a wonderful piece of art. It reminds me of the Disney short Paperman. Well done.

It's very simple, he has no character and needs to be fleshed out to be liked.
I have a feeling his Pony counterpart would be far more interesting because for starters he's a royal guard already having to deal with Twilight's brother being his boss.
But as we know him now, he is a human high school guy with no back-story, no real hobbies or interest and most impotently no negative traits to challenge him.
The problem is that people think Twilight deserves a way more fleshed out character then a generic love interest.

I'm actually one of the few people I've met who LIKES Flash Sentry. Yeah, his role in EqG was not really important and I think making him Sunset Shimmer's "Ex-boyfriend" was taking the cliches too far, but I like the idea of the girls getting to have love interests (the fandom does enough shipping as it is).
Anyway, great artwork

The problem with Flash for rabid bronies is that he stole their waifu.
The problem with Flash for people who aren't rabid but don't like is his personality: he doesn't have one. In the movie
he was the empty ''nice guy'' who is there just to be the nice guy. There is nothing interesting about him; no background, no flaws, nothing!
Whereas the mane 6 are all nicely defined and have their perks and flaws, he is just made of cartboard.
The fact that Twilight then has a crush on his alternate self and not his original self is kinda creepy.
(But then again, the whole movie was bad at storytelling. It hurted my eyes)

I think it's due to the fact that largely, Flash has no real character and existed soley to act as a somewhat forced love interest in the first and frankly quite underwhelming FIM movie "Equestria Girls". He was just one of the smaller problems in a family-fun-sized box of inaddiquacy.

As for Sentry in general...I dunno, or rather don't have any opinion, the character is so marginal in them movie that I can't really say I like the character or not - I don't care really, especially since he won't appear in s4. I guess the main accusation toward him is that he's rather plain, and doesn't have much to offer in terms of personality...but I guess it all depends on writing, the writers could flesh him out better if they really wanted to. That's how it is sometimes

I like Flashlight. I haven't really seen any hate for Flashlight, but I'm sure it wouldn't take a lot of searching to find it. This is a really pretty picture :3 and now I need to watch Paperman cuz I keep seeing it come up in this Disney group I'm in and I don't know what it is .-.

I think there's at least three aspects to it.
1) Flash Sentry is associated with Equestria Girls, which was hardly as well-received by the brony community as a pony movie involving actual ponies and set in Equestria would've been (to say the least). Not everyone hated the movie, but far from everyone loved it.
2) Twilight's been a very independent, self-sufficient mare so far; I think it's fair to say she's likely one of the most skilled magic users in contemporary Equestria, and she'll no doubt leave her mark on history. Whatever her future career may look like and whatever she'll end up doing, many bronies feel that it'd mesh poorly with her established character to have her focus on settling down with a stallion and having foals instead. In fact, showing that traditional gender archetypes and roles aren't all there is to life is one of the major themes of MLP:FiM to begin with: sure, finding a partner and having kids is part of life, but it needn't be the central theme of a woman's existence. The fact that Flash Sentry was primarily introduced as a teenager, with Twilight falling for him in a "sigh-he's-so-dreamy" sort of highschool puppy love, doesn't help either; the whole thing feels tacked-on, like a love story added to a Hollywood movie because "love sells".
3) Some bronies probably feel an affinity to Twilight themselves; even though it doesn't rise to the level of "love" in most cases, Flash Sentry may be seen as a rival of sorts.
Isn't EqG canon, BTW? I vaguely recall a statement from one of the powers that be that it's supposed to be, but maybe I'm misremembering things.

There's a thing about Twi being a bunch of people's waifu, so that really is a main reason as you said. But I really agree with your #2 point. Excellent analysis.

Well, no. As you'll find out, the fandom works in asinine, whiny, bullshitty ways that will annoy you in due time. However, I can understand why some fans get butthurt over it, but then again, it's (kind-of) non-canon movie so... Yeah.

The problem I have with him is that he doesn't live up to Twilight.
Twilight has 3 seasons under her belt; we've had 65 episodes and a movie to get to know her and watch her grow. Now, some people see Flash as being the next step in the process, as another opportunity for Twilight to grow, but I don't. I'm fine with Twilight having a love interest or some form of romantic relationship, but what was done with Flash Sentry is not the proper way to go about it.
He has about 3 minutes of screen time, around 8 lines, and maybe half the character development of Hayseed Turnip Truck. And to get that reference you might have to go google Hayseed Turnip Truck.
For a character as well developed as Twilight to be paired off with Flash Sentry, a character with so little development...well, do the math.
All that said, this is a very nice piece of artwork. The characters are on model, I like what you did with Twilight's mane and tail, and I like how you represented magic with light shading(my terminology is a little lacking here). The shadows have managed to befuddle me; The ones cast by the ponies make perfect sense and look great, but the one on the right side of the picture has left me confused. I'm guessing it's being cast by an awning of some sort?
I hope my explanation will help you understand my viewpoint on Flash, and I hope that I have conveyed that even though our opinions may differ, we can all appreciate good art.

This is amazing! I think that Flash had potential when we first learned about him, but Equestria Girls screwed that up. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy EG for the most part, they just kinda threw him in there just because.

Hey man may I first say welcome you to the fandom since you said you are a relatively fresh face. Also there is a lot of hate for a couple reasons I don't want to go into detail with. but in general their stupid reasons. 2nd. this is very great. The coloration (although black and white) is still very fantastic with shading and signs of light Example twilights magic. The models are great and the simple but still very detailed background/background characters are legit. My friend you are amazing.
