Description
Name: Suli RundiNickname: "Suli"
Leucistic Turkey Vulture/Jaguarundi (Cathartes aura/Puma yagouaroundi)
Aery: Twistoult
Clan: Abhainn
Current rank: Young gryphon
Gender: Female
Personality: Suli Rundi's parents were deeply religious. Mother and father were an unusual mate-pair; their bird halves were turkey vulture and western screech-owl respectively, and they saw their relationship as a loving devotion to Doamich and Reindist windsonde.deviantart.com/blog/…
While Suli loves the festivity of chants and songs and rituals, she is nowhere near as zealously spiritual as the rest of her family. She has an amicable, trusting personality and is a proponent of peace between the aeries. Suli is not particularly wise, but she is adequately clever. Her tendency to assume everyone is inherently good has gotten her into trouble during visits to Skrekrill. Suli's one area of expertise is in the use of plants and other natural concoctions. Her sense of smell enables her to identify individual ingredients and chemicals with great accuracy. Her nose even saved her life during one trip to Skrekrill, when an anonymous gryphon (probably annoyed by her ebullient peace-mongering) slipped poison into her drink. Suli travels frequently to Grandesque, but became a lot more cautious about Skrekrill after that poisoning attempt.
Suli Rundi's particular form of leucism is inspired by this turkey vulture farm4.static.flickr.com/3623/3… at the Carolina Raptor Center. I've never seen her in person, but she's such a pretty bird.
Suli is my last Windsonde design. One for each aerie is more than enough, and after their challenges are finished they can still participate in events and "extracurricular" art.

I would rather keep these characters to myself. I am not fully finished fleshing out their personalities and history.

Cool! Turkey Vultures are among my favorite birds to work with and she is the prettiest leucisitc tuvu I have ever seen. I wish I could meet her myself. I also volunteered and later worked at a "CRC" but mine was the California Raptor Center!

I love this character!! The drawing of her fluffy baby self squarking away is utterly charming and adorable. I love how much care you put into detailing all the fur and feathers.

She's so pretty! Her wings look strangely strokeable P=
Also Turkey Vultures are lovely looking birds, I'm really envious that you got to work with them.

I do indeed! They're my favorite type of bird. I used to work with two of them; now, sadly, I only work with one. The older one, who was a retired education bird at the time of his death, had more personality than any other animal I've known.

Yes, I work at a raptor rehabilitation center. This is one of the vultures (sadly, he was old and passed away last year): [link]

D'awwwwwwww, I think she's cuuuuuuuuute. <333 I actually think Turkey Vultures are pretty awesome birds.
And yeah, I love all of your griffs 'cause they all have such fun personalities. I like the fact that Suli likes to sing....even if she probably sounds like something dying. xD; I need to actually get around to working on my app though...I'm planning on making my griff be in Twistoult, so maybe Suli has a potential friend?

Yeah, Turkey Vultures have pretty awful voices. I forget where I found the recordings, but I have a few vocalizations in my bird call playlist. I tried to record the tuvus I work with, but my microphone was too crappy. The good recordings sound half like a barn owl screech, half like someone snoring... in short, the overall effect is very much like something dying! I don't think Suli's voice is quite that bad (especially her speaking voice... it's probably only slightly raspy), but it's certainly not good enough for singing XD!
What's your gryphon going to be once your app is approved? Got the species picked out already?

Ahaha, I've actually heard them in person before. It's pretty strange, to say the very least. xD I can definitely imagine Suli's voice being a little on the raspy side, but I wouldn't think it'd be a big deal to other griffs. Corvid griffons probably have some pretty funky voices too.
She's going to be a Barred Owl/domestic tabby cat mix. I haven't seen any other Barred Owls in the group yet, so I'm pretty excited about designing her.

Ooooh, so pretty!! That is one gorgeous Turkey Vulture she's based on! (A "chocolate turkey" color morph!

The number of noodle-griffs continues to grow!
As for friends, I'd pitch in my next -and conveniently Twistoult- griff(GOEA/Bobcat), but it's more than likely that Suli here wouldn't want to hang out with him.
But that's ok, he wouldn't hang with her either 'cause he's due to be a selfish jerk who discriminates against non-Accipitriformes
They both like to accessorize, though!

Ciameth In reply to comixqueen [2011-04-27 13:51:04 +0000 UTC]
Well technically the latest genetic and morphological evidence places cathartidae in accipitriformes as the most basal grouping. But yeah, Suli would probably turn her beak up at his rudeness and superiority complex. I look forward to seeing him, though. Sometimes jerkfaces can be the most fun characters! I totally love Valcaur more my other two, kinder gryphons. Is GOEA/bobcat going to be after Iorangi reaches adult stage, or are you doing him first?

comixqueen In reply to Ciameth [2011-04-27 16:35:42 +0000 UTC]
GOEA/bobcat will be before Iorangi- Io's personality still needs some work, whereas Jerkface-griff is all set to go.
Reva just needs to surpass a character barrier of hers first...

Gorgeous design! I've never seen a leucistic vulture before, but from that photo, it looks really beautiful. I did see a partially albino one, though- it had a partially white body. I saw it roosting in the loft window of an old barn once, but never saw it again.
I also have a jaguarundi gryphon in the works (He'll debut when I finish up Briggen's challenges). XDD Mine's a Crested Caracara, though. He'll be a Twistoult, I think.

I'd love to know whether the evenly leucistic or "piebald" leucistic turkey vultures like the one you saw are more common. I feel like it must be the partial-whites, because I see more pictures of those and the only two abnormal tuvus I've seen in the wild had white patches. I doubt there's ever been an effort (or honestly, any reason, other than interest) to survey leucistic tuvus, but since they can survive and reproduce quite easily, there seem to be more of them than any other leucistic accipitriformes.
Jaguarundi are so weird-looking, mostly in the head. A Caracara/jaguarundi sounds promising! I also have a huge personal preference for gryphons that have cat/bird species from the some range. Caracara and jaguarundi fit together since they're both the oddball species in their order.

haha, that's actually why I chose a jaguarundi and a caracara. XD They're both such misfits, and they look good together! Although, my new gryphon is so that he ruins the elegance of both species. XD

I think it would be interesting to see if a breeding population of leucistic tuvus (the brown leucistic, not the piebald) could be established successfully. Would the leucism become more pronounced if two leucistic vultures bred, I wonder? Or would it be the same degree? Because I honestly think that in some areas, being brown instead of black might be more advantageous for the bird (but if the effects became more pronounced, they would be like a beacon for predators/poachers). However, I think the odds of enough leucistic birds coming to the same location to breed and make a leucistic population is highly unlikely. I doubt leucistic siblings would interbreed.
BUT THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES! Pretty brown turkey vultures!

Augi certainly doesn't have many friends if any, but I think he would get along well with Suli ^^ I think he would enjoy listening to her forays into Grandesque, being the homebody he is (or is just too stubborn to really go outside of his comfort zone). ^^ What an awesome idea, using the leucistic versions of the jaguarundi and turkey vulture - that vulture in the photo really is quite lovely!

She'd be very interested in things that he picks up from the ocean--seaweed, urchins and such. Turkey vultures are beach combers, but certainly not aquatic! With her opportunistic diet, I think Suli would love to pick up his seafood-opening techniques
There are nicer photos of her on google [link] Leucistic tuvus aren't too uncommon, but the "piebald" ones are typically what I see represented in photos, not birds so evenly "washed out" [link] (or rarer, [link] [link] ) and (twice) in the wild. It's such a small sample I'm not sure which is actually more common. I've never heard of an albino tuvu, and have only seen one picture of a completely white leucistic tuvu [link]
