Description
Raptor/hawk head at different angles. These are all the same Red-tailed Hawk, but he molted from juvenile to adult plumage while I was collecting these pictures so there is color variation to the feathers; the lighting also changed day-to-day. This bird is not a falconry bird, but rather a permanent resident at a raptor rehabilitation center. He came in from the wild with a badly-healed coracoid break and cannot fly very well. His upper beak is over-long, so keep that in mind if you're trying to draw a realistic, natural raptor. I hope this makes a decent reference for people drawing birds of prey, gryphons, etc. Feel free to download for personal use. Not for photo-manipulation. If anyone is interested in a similar thing with owls, kestrels, another species of hawk, raptor feet, etc let me know.Great-horned Owl: [link]

10/26: Wow, the daily deviation was a surprise! I'm glad this is turning out useful for so many people. My gallery has a lot of other bird of prey photos that I usually allow people to use for reference if they ask first and credit back to the original, so feel free to take a look.

Otherwise, very nice shots, red tails are my favorites.

You don't by any chance have any of the smaller owl species (screech, burrowing, pygmy, elf owl, etc) on hand and willing to participate, do you? ouo
π: 0 β©: 1
Ciameth In reply to Tsubane [2010-11-02 04:24:20 +0000 UTC]
If you mean for these kind of references, yes, I plan to do a barn owl and a burrowing owl. Eventually, I may also do a Northern Saw-Whet owl, but as she is partially blind and tends not to look around much, it might be difficult to collect shots of her looking up or down like the hawk.

Tsubane In reply to Ciameth [2010-11-02 05:05:27 +0000 UTC]
A saw-whet would be AMAZING! I just love those. If I had a pet bird I'd want a saw-whet. Of course, I'd never get a pet bird - they just make me nervous, I can't "read" them to see if they're stressed or in need like I can with most mammals - but still, I can dream.
The barn owl will be pretty cool. Is he/she the common tyto alba or one of the others? They're all gorgeous animals.

Ciameth In reply to Tsubane [2010-11-02 05:14:53 +0000 UTC]
She's the common tyto alba, with a whitish face for a female, so she's very pretty. If you spend enough time around birds, you eventually get an idea of what their stress signals are. The individuals I work all share certain signals, but also have their own particular behaviors when they're stressed. Of course, raptors are illegal to keep as pets (and would make pretty awful ones anyways). My favorite companion birds are pigeons and backyard chickens. Both can be very tame, tolerant and fairly affectionate for a bird

Tsubane In reply to Ciameth [2010-11-02 18:14:02 +0000 UTC]
I might keep a pigeon. I'm a little prejudiced against chickens. But I always thought that the cinnamon colored pigeons that you occasionally see in the city flocks were really pretty animals.
I figured it was just that I wasn't used to them. When I first started keeping fish, I couldn't read them at all. Once I spent more time watching them, though, it started to get easier to tell how they were feeling.
