Description
Golden Eagle head at different angles reference. Modeled by two captive female Golden Eagles. The older one (darker eyes) is one of my favorite birds. She is a very small female (smaller than some of the males the center has rehabilitated) and has lived in captivity nearly thirty years. She was severely wounded by gunshot as a young adult and had to have her wing amputated; however, she doesn't let that slow her down. She climbs all over her cage, in and out of her bathtub (she loves a shower) and plays with enrichment items. The younger adult eagle is the biggest bird we have at the rehab center, and the largest Golden Eagle I've ever seen in person.Feel free to download for personal use. Not for photo-manipulation. The older girl's beak is a better ref of appropriate length in a wild bird (captive bird beaks do not usually receive as much wear, and grow longer), as the younger girl (who is higher-strung) needs to be coped in some of these pictures.

No; owning eagle feathers without permit is illegal in the United States.

Thanks I really make them for me because I hate scouring google for refs (and prefer using my own images anyways), but sharing them is fun! I'm trying to collect more exotic raptors (I work with CA native species, but I'm hoping to visit a raptor-friend who works with a harpy soon... a gymnogene would also be awesome, but I don't know anyone who works with one, much less a facility in the US that keeps them) and other animals like a wolf, gull, corvid, and horse.

I know; Harpy eagles are incredible! I had to pass up a summer internship in South America tracking Harpies that would have involved handling them (!!!!) because the stipend paid did not even begin to cover travel and living costs, and college drained all my money. I'm starting to apply to every zoo and wild bird position I can find. Hopefully I get one of them; if not, I'm applying for that internship again next year. It would be worth the expense!

Woooow, that sounds SO cool! Man, if I wasnβt so damn poor and terribly afraid of spidersβ¦ sounds like it would be an absolute blast. You seem to know a huge amount about raptors and birds in general, so Iβd be very surprised if they passed you up. D: I wish you good luck with your applying!
That sentence sounded weirdβ¦ O__Γ³ β¦ Iβll blame it on lack of sleep. Best of luck to you!

Got curious about coping and just read up on it. Sounds like a scary job to do! Partly regarding self-preservation, but also because it seems like it would be easy to slip up and hurt the bird. Do you do the coping? If so, my hat is off to you!
π: 0 β©: 1
Ciameth In reply to shmeeden [2011-01-04 02:28:04 +0000 UTC]
I'm learning, but my supervisor does most of the coping at the center. It is really easy to screw up and damage the beak if you don't know what you're doing. I definitely don't enjoy doing it, but if I'm going to have to trim beaks occasionally, I want to be able to do it well.

jlout8 [2011-01-03 22:18:36 +0000 UTC]
this is really helpful! and just wondering what is it when you said she needs to have her beak coped?
π: 0 β©: 1
Ciameth In reply to jlout8 [2011-01-03 22:42:04 +0000 UTC]
The part of the upper beak that curves down can get too long on captive birds because sometimes they don't wear it down enough. Like fingernails, it keeps growing. If it got too long, she could have a problem eating. But it's also hard to trim when it's too long, so we trim it when it's just a little too long to prevent trouble later. However, she gets stressed out easily so we also don't want to trim it too frequently--hence it looking slightly too long for a wild bird in some of the pictures.
