Description Great Horned Owl head at different angles. These are all the same bird except for two in the middle: the angry, puffed up owl 3 across and 5 down, and the picture of the chick right beneath him. The main model is a permanent resident at a raptor rehabilitation center. His ear tufts are down in the majority of these images because they typically only go up when he is alarmed or upset. This guy is a patient, tolerant bird on the glove (he is frequently used to train inexperienced volunteers how to jess and handle a raptor for the first time), but there is one thing that never fails to immediately perk those ear tufts up: children. The other five Great-Horned Owls who live together at the center also appear to hate children (even well-behaved, quiet groups of children) and it is somewhat amusing to see all ear tufts raise simultaneously when a school tour group arrives.

Heheh, I love the middle row/3rd from the left picture. Looks like an owl's version of "WHAZZUP?!"

This is really cool. Thanks for making the ref sheet. Funny how so many of the faces have a "GTFO" attitude to them.

What a wonderful reference! This will be very helpful.

Do you think you would ever make one for magpies?

Ciameth In reply to aboveClouds [2010-11-03 01:14:58 +0000 UTC]

I don't work with any magpies, so I would have to spend A LOT of time just sitting outside taking pictures of magpies, which would be fun but... I just don't have that much free time. There will be more raptors though!

Ah, okay. It really would take forever to make a head angle ref of a wild bird. Thank you for replying.

Yay! More raptors.

Awesome ref! Thanks for posting it!

Haha, how cute. I love owls with ear tufts, they're so expressive.

Not that the bald ones aren't... but the tufts are just cute.

We actually had a "bald" Great-horned owl. Got his head caught in barbed wire, and ended up looking like Harvey Dent/Two-Face, with nothing but mangled feathers and scar tissue covering half his head. Poor guy. He definitely wasn't cute. But yeah, I know what you mean--even the owls (naturally) without tufts are very appealing. Like this little Saw-Whet Owl from the same center: [link]

Oh goodness. Saw-whets are definitely my favorite kind of owl. They are just so precious.

Poor thing! That must have been horrible for him. I hope he had a long life.
